I keep having a problem with spammers creating variations on the w/wiki talk
page. For example, the last spammer create this page to fill with spam:
Talk:W/wiki/Talk:W/wiki/Talk:W/wiki/Talk:W/wiki/Talk:Index.php
Is there anyway to prevent this?
Thanks,
Caitlin
Hi,
I finally managed to install mediawiki on my computer. It seems running well. When I looked at the apache's error log, I found a lot of this kind of messages
[Tue Apr 24 14:58:37 2007] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] (20024)The given path misformatted or contained invalid characters: Cannot map GET /wiki/index.php/User:XXX HTTP/1.1 to file, referer: http://localhost/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
It looks like apache always tried to find page User:XXX but it is in fact an argument of index.php. My wiki seems to run well, though.
Should I change something in httpd.conf or php.ini to fix it?
Thanks,
-- Ming

hi all,

software. The last attempted database query was:

Is there any way in MW to select on a partial string? Anyway to use
wild card characters?
Full work is faster etc but at times you might be spelling challenged

Hi,
I have been setting up quite a few Mediawikis in both Windows and Linux, and
it occurred to me it would be handy to know a bit about how the wikipedia is
set up. Is there any up to date information about how which versions of
software it runs (assuming that's not considered a security risk), and what
it prefers?
The particular info I was pondering:
* I know they use APC, but do they use FastCGI or just mod_php? Is there a
good page on hints as to how best configure this?
* Mysql - is there a central cluster for updates, and then a bunch of
slaves, I looked at this page:
https://wikitech.leuksman.com/view/Server_roles but could work out if there
were multiple machines as master, or just a single machine master, with lots
of slaves for a single wiki eg EN.
* Mysql - they still use 4, is this for stability, performance or some other
reason?
* Do they use a standard linux flavour eg ubuntu or Red Hat, or are the
servers all on a custom kernel.
* How do they manage upgrading the software, do different servers run on
different versions. Presumably there is a test environment, but do they have
to go read only at all?
Many thanks for any insights into managing this complex environment,
Alex Powell

Hi Jim,
Exactly as what you said. The formating function simply doesn't work :(
I typed ''Italic Text'' and I got the same character string, not italic font.
Thanks,

No, nothing like that - I'm just trying to find out what your setup is.
For reference, the formatting toolbar adds formatting characters, but
doesn't format the text directly, per se.
So for example, if you write this:
Italic Text
And highlight it and hid the Italics button, you'll get this:
''Italic Text''
Those two apostrophes before and after the text indicate italics. They're
the same as <i></i> in HTML.
Is this what you're talking about? (Sorry if I misinterpreted the question)

On the off-chance that someone might find it useful, I've just uploaded
my Rigorous Search extension to MW.org. This extension implements a
full-page search facility, by the tedious method of individually
searching the source of each page as stored in the "page" / "text"
tables -- not the FULLTEXT index kept in the "searchindex" table for
MySQL searches.
This is very slow, and almost totally useless -- except that it allows
searching of the complete page source, not just the user-visible version
of the text stored in "searchindex". So, for example, if you want to
search for hyperlinks to a particular web site, this will work, whereas
a MediaWiki search would not ("searchindex" includes link text, but not
the link URL). You can also use it to search for particular markup tags.
A useful application is to search for novice users making "http://..."
links into the wiki instead of using regular wikilinks, which causes
pages to appear orphaned when they're not.

Are you using MediaWiki out-of-the-box? or have you installed any
extensions or skins?

Hi,
Sorry if somebody else has posted this question. But the formating tool bar doesn't work for me. For example,
''Italic text'' would become ''Italic text'' after I press the save or preview button.
Does anybody know this problem before?
Thanks,
