Use a beta version of MySQL. It will show such a message at random.
Seriously, if you simply stop MySQL, the user will get such a
message. Of course, if MySQL is used for other things, you can't do
that.

How can I put the wiki in off-line mode so the users will see a
message that the wiki is down for maintenance?
I searched the MediaWiki website, the list archives and
DefaultSettings, and I couldn't find this information...
hi,
I had installed Mediawiki 1.7.1 and 1.9.1 locally on the system using IIS
5, PHP5.1.6, and MYSQL server 5.0.24.
It was woking fine for almost week after installaton, but suddenly i get
this particular error message when i try to access the wiki site on my
system.
Wiki has a problem
*Sorry! This site is experiencing technical difficulties.*
Try waiting a few minutes and reloading.
(Can't contact the database server: Access denied for user
'wikiuser'@'localhost' (using password: YES) (localhost))
I have no clue why this is happening though, can someone kindly help me.
Thanks.
I am using mediawiki version: 1.8.2
I am using PHP version 5.2.0

Hi Anthony,
My wiki is currently using it and I've just tested it with Wiki On a
Stick -
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_on_a_stick
And everything is working. I've followed the guidelines on:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Link
What version of MW (PHP, etc) you use. Is your PHP environment
configured
properly?
Regards,
Aretai

I created an .htaccess file which forwards all the direct queries to the
images directory to the main web page, and set the $wgUploadPath
variable to go through img_auth.php as advised ($wgUploadPath =
"$wgScriptPath/img_auth.php";). I tested, and I am able to upload a file
via the wiki, and have verified that the test file is in the directory
that the wiki site said it is in, but I am not able to view the file in
the wiki site. When I click on a link to the file on the image
description page in the wiki, I get an error (Access denied. You need to
log in to access files on this server.) Any suggestions?

Block off the images directory through whatever means you like (move it,
.htaccess, whatever) and set $wgUploadPath to go through img_auth.php as
if it were a directory; that script will mediate access to the files to
require a login.
This requires that your web server's PHP configuration support PATH_INFO
on PHP. (Some CGI-based configurations or others do not.)

Hi,
I need to modify my mediawiki installation so that I can search for 3 letter
words / acronyms such as 'VPN' etc.
I have WAMP 5 installed on windows XP to run Mediawiki.
I have searched the Mediawiki site for a solution to the problem but have
not found any answer so far.
Any help is much appreciated,
Mike.
