NEWS: E-Mail notification on page changes (watch-listed pages and user_talk page)

NEWS: We have developped a reasonable scheme for page change notifications. HOW IT WORKS: User X gets a short E-Mail: - when a page listed in user X's watch list changes - when the user_talk page of UserX changes Addtional features: - The notification message body and subject texts can easily be adapted to your needs. They are pages in the MediaWiki: namespace and have parameters such as $PAGESUMMARY and $PAGEEDITOR - Further notification messages are suppressed until UserX visits the changed page(s) ! - "Own" changes (to a page in your own watchlist or to your own User_talk page) do not trigger the sending of notification mails. - The notification flags can be reset together for all watchlist pages with a function (button) on UserX Watchlist page - We will introduce some global flags to enable or disable the two Mail Notification modules if the code keepers allow so (Brion). Please be patient. Allow for some days of further tests. The mail programs have been developped in the last two weeks and are now fully integrated into to 1.3.1 version. A documentation follows soon; by the way, the patches are not too complicated, finally. Unable to install 1.3.0-beta6 on Mandrake Linux 10.0

Hi! I'm trying to install MediaWiki 1.3.0-beta6 on Mandrake Linux 10.0. I get the following warnings and errors: <<< Checking environment... PHP 4.3.4: ok PHP server API is apache2handler; ok, using pretty URLs (index.php/Page_Title) XML / Latin1-UTF-8 conversion is missing! Wiki will probably not work. PHP's memory_limit is 8M. Found ImageMagick: /usr/bin/convert; image thumbnailing will be enabled if you enable uploads. Question about tabs

I know this has probably been asked before but my attempted searches of google and wikimedia help produced no results, nor a brief look at the archives (couldn't figure out how to search them). Anyway, I'm trying to create a wiki which needs two pages associated with every article. For each article I want both a discussion page and an explanation page. While I could just require everyone creating a page X to also create exp_X this isn't particularly an elegant solution. Besides I would like to have the link to the explanation page in the same place on every page. I imagine one way to do this would be templates but it would be much nicer if I could create another tab like they have for talk. Does anyone know if this is possible?

Access control feature

I am in need of ACL (access control) for mediawiki. I've looked through the docs and mailing list and it seems that mediawiki doesn't have that feature. Am I correct? If I were to try and implement that feature how hard would it be? Would it be easy to plug in to the current architecture or is this feature something so foreign to mediawiki that integrating it would require a lot of effort? Oh, and I do realize that ACLs go against the spirit of a wiki. It's just that we would like to use mediawiki internally but some information must not be viewed by certain employees (legal reasons, NDAs, etc ...) possible to permit searches on 3 or fewer words?

I want to let my users search for 3-letter queries (which are common for acronyms used in my wiki). Is there some reason for the setting $wgDBminWordLen = 4; in the file DefaultSettings.php and would anything be harmed if I changed that line to assign a value of 3? I'm a bit reluctant to do this, in case there might be unforseen problems ensuing. (I note that the error message implies not that short search items are prevented by choice, but rather by necessity ... that's why I'm a little scared to change the line without advice.) Dan E. Getting rid of "Retrieved from" message?

Just upgraded from 1.3.0beta4 to 1.3.1, which has gone almost flawlessly. The wiki looks just like it did before except for one thing: every article now has, at the bottom, a message "Retrieved from <url>", rendered just as if it were part of the article text. Which I do not want. The modification time, access counter and such (i.e. the other stuff that printFooter() in Skin.php prints out) look normal. I'm using the Monobook skin.
