Hi people, new kid on the block...
I just got 1.2.26 off the sf.net download section, I am in the process
of setting up a Hebrew wiki site and MediaWiki seemed to be the best
solution currently available.
Installation went fine without a hitch. I had a few fixes to do on the
rewriting rules to get it to run right (the example on the site had a
few syntax errors), and then I went looking for skins, since the default
is... well, dull.
The best that comes with the tarball seems to be Blue Cologne, I read
the users' guide and I see that many others are listed - Mono, MonoBook,
DaVinci and others, but for the life of me I can't see where to download
them from, and how to install them once they were here (in Language.php
I got to cologneBlue by selecting a number, but I could not find where
that was enumerated... the only place I haven't looked is inside the DB
itself, should I?). I am guessing MonoBook and the rest are on the CVS
only, but I was aiming at getting a stable version rather than the
latest CVS flux version. How do I get my paws on the skin currently used
by (he|en).Wikipedia.org for instance?
as a side note - my server is running Debian Stable, so MySQL and php
are supposedly almost too old for mediawiki, but I'm glad to say it
seems to be working fine.
Thanks in advance for your patiance and help, I greatly appreciate your
work on this wonderful useful project! Once I get the last few things
ironed out I may even migrate some of the stuff I have today on twiki,
this is really great!
Ira.
I've come across the same problem as you several times now. Last night
I spent some time debugging the code (ugg) and narrowed the problem
down to line 441 in file Template.php. It seems as though the fopen
call fails and nothing happens after that.
I'm assuming there is a php setting somewhere that can fix the cause of
this but i'm not too sure what or where.
Looking around for some info about fopen it seems that safe_mode and
open_basedir are two settings that can affect things. I don't have
safe_mode enabled and open_basedir isn't set to anything.
Anyone have a clue???
Cheers,
ahmi

I've just downloaded RC3, and tried to install it, but no luck. In fact, I
get exactly the same result as with RC2. After successfully completing the
installation process and moving the LocalSettings.php file from the config
directory, I click in the link that's supposed to take me to the front page,
and instead I get:
[pear_error: message="failed to open stream: Operation not permitted" code=0
mode=return level=notice prefix="" info=""]
Here's the successful environment check:
--------------------------------
PHP 4.3.5 ok
PHP server API is apache; ok, using pretty URLs (index.php/Page_Title)
Have XML / Latin1-UTF-8 conversion support.
PHP is configured with no memory_limit.
Have zlib support; enabling output compression.
Found GD graphics library built-in, image thumbnailing will be enabled if
you enable uploads.

Trying regular user... ok.
Connected to database... 4.0.20-log; enabling MySQL 4 enhancementsWarning:

Initialising log pages...
Initialising "MediaWiki" namespace...
Creating LocalSettings.php...
Success! Move the LocalSettings.php file into the parent directory, then
follow this link to your wiki.
--------------------------------
It looks like a problem with pear, except...I have RC2 running successfully
(brilliantly) on another of my websites on the same webserver (I have a
number of domains running within the same hosting environment). The
intention was to move the wiki from where it's working to a more appropriate
domain, but I can't get it to work anywhere else, and a fresh, clean install
gives me the exact same result.
PS No one except the web hoster has root access to the database server, but
I didn't need it to get it working the first time. To summarise, all domains
are on one honkin' big web server, all databases are on one honkin' big
database server. As far as I can tell, this is a pretty standard setup for a
commercial hosting environment.
Any thoughts, anyone? I must have clean installed this software (RC2 and
RC3) close to a dozen times now, and only once has it worked...and that one
works brilliantly, as I said.
Cheers

Hello all
I've been using the mediawiki beta 3 for quite some time now and its
working great.
I use an ISP for the webhosting and SQL. Unfortunately, I only have 50
Mbyte available at this host and I was wondering if it's possible to
move the Images folder to another server (IIS ftp server)?
Before I try this I would like to know if anyone have done this before.
Thanks!

Hi,
I just installed mediawiki 1.3beta3 and when I visit this URL:
index.php?title=Main_Page
I get this error:
[pear_error: message="failed to open stream: No such file or directory"
code=0 mode=return level=notice prefix="" info=""]
The source code shows nothing but this line (no html code at all)
I've turned on ini_set( "display_errors", true ); in index.php but
nothing else shows up.
Any ideas what's wrong?
Thanks

Hi all,
Where are Search stop-words stored? I have the suspicion that the word
"gay" may be set as a stop-word by default, because on my MediaWiki
setup searching for it gives no results, even though it appears on at
least one page, and searching for any other words on that page show up
in the search page.
Thanks,
Matias
This may interest some of you out there; Groklaw has today opened a new
side project, GrokDoc, running on MediaWiki:

Hi there,
Not that I expect this email to get anyone's attention or evoke a reply,
but there isn't another option, is there?
I encountered the common problem of users who do not have MySQL root
come onto, despite the fact that the config index says that its not
neccessary so long as a user/pass to MySQL is given.
Checking environment...
* PHP 4.3.6 ok
* PHP server API is cgi; using ugly URLs (index.php?title=Page_Title)
* Have zlib support; enabling output compression.
* Found GD graphics library built-in, image thumbnailing will be
enabled if you enable uploads.
* Installation directory: /homepages/22/d94944393/htdocs/yeago.net/wiki
* Script URI path: /wiki
* MySQL error 1045: Access denied for user:
'root(a)infong223.kundenserver.de' (Using password: YES)
---------------
I got around this, as others did, by simply changing 'root' in
config/index.php to my username.
However, this causes a new problem.....

Yep, that's as far as it gets. It hangs and never spits out any local
settings. But by using the "echo 'here'" method, I was able to trace the
hanging to the return statement inside writeLocalSettings()
That is as far as I know how to follow this problem. If anyone has any
insight, or if anyone is even reading this and could do me the great
favor of pointing me in the direction of somewhere/someone who may yield
some answers, please let me know.

Pardon me for asking this question, as I'm sure it's been asked repeatedly,
but it's difficult to search these archives, and I haven't been able to find
the answer on the Wikimedia web site. I am thinking about using Wikimedia
software for a non-profit corporation I am a part of. One of our main
concerns is the GNU FDL. Are we required, by virtue of using the Wikimedia
software, to license our content using the GNU FDL? Can we protect our
content from unauthorized distribution or modification with our own
copyright notice and use statement, rather than using the GNU FDL?
Thanks
