When I was messing around with the nav box, I found this site to be really helpful.

One thing this guy notes is this:
"Community portal and current events can be turned off by editing the appropriate system-message string. The comment in the Language file is WRONG. Don't set the strings to "", set them to "-". That's easy to see from the code in SkinPHPTal. "

Hm, have you accidentally changed the file's permission bits?
Otherwise, I've no idea.
But I wanted to point out that, once you get the template working
again, there's an easier way to do this anyway: setting the name of
the portal link to be empty [""] should hide it completely. I'm afraid
I don't have a 1.3 install working to play with, but although
languages/Language.php suggests you do it there, I suspect you
actually need to do it in the database by blanking the
[[MediaWiki:Portal]] article in the wiki.

I thought I would get tricky and strip the lines out of the
xhtml_slim.pt template for the Community Portal in the navigation
section. Once I did that, I started getting a stream error
(permissions problem):
[pear_error: message="failed to open stream: Permission denied" code=0
mode=return level=notice prefix="" info=""]
This continues even though I replaced the modified .pt file with the
original. What directories and files should I be checking? I checked
that the templates directory and the template had suitable
permissions...

I installed MediaWiki but it doesn't seem to have (or be properly
finding) the Help files and other files that I assume come with the
install. I am running version 1.3.8 on FreeBSD.
I went to the front pages, added some text and a link, and that seems
to be working. But the Help files:
http://www.chrislott.org/mwiki/index.php?title=Help:Contents
come up with new pages rather than the help information!
How can I fix this?

I made patch to MediaWiki so users of Anarchopedia can chose normaln
Monobook and "Anarchopedia Monobook" (with inverted colors) in the
skin menu. It is possible to test it at http://test.anarchopedia.org
as well as download from
http://www.anarchopedia.org/software/mediawiki/
It would be usefull if Mediawiki includes this patch, but I can
understand opposite reasons (the skin is just the color variant of
Monobook, not "real" skin).
Also, I have problem with test.anarchopedia.org: it uses a lot of
processor resources. Rewrite engine is not the reason (I tested it).
Code has one more "if" and one more "case" statemants and I don't
think that it is the reason... Do you have some idea?
Hallo

Hi all,
I've just written an ebuild (the package building file) for MediaWiki 1.3.8
for the Gentoo Linux Distribution.
AFAIK, this is the first distribution providing support for MediaWiki then,
but I heard that debian will follow soon (sometime).
However, I'd like to encourage everyone having a Gentoo Linux installed to
test this package and give us feedback via [1].
Best regards,
Christian Parpart.

http://www.winterschur.de/?fey <-- please help me to get a sheep!
04:08:37 up 18 days, 20:38, 1 user, load average: 0.12, 0.25, 0.21
Any help you can provide would be appreciated:
Setup:
MediaWiki 1.3.8
PHP 4.3.9 (cgi mode)
MySQL 4.0.22
Installed on Windows 2003 (IIS 6)
With anonymous web logins disabled - If any user other than
Administrator tries to access the site the following error comes up:
[pear_error: message="failed to open stream: Permission denied" code=0
mode=return level=notice prefix="" info=""]
When administrator credentials are used, MediaWiki functions properly
(proving proper setup of PHP, MySQL etc).
I've tried assigning rights of every kind to other users without success
- even adding users to Domain Admin group etc.
Any ideas?
P.S. Please don't suggest running MediaWiki on Apache - I must use IIS
for the AD authentication support and for a few other ASP applications
running on the server.
Hello Rowan,
Thanks for the clarification. I do understand what Mediawiki is used for. Ok, Now lets forget about the tables in the database.
I actually created Columns in MoinMoin wiki for our environment in which my data is in the forms of rows and columns. Moinmoin wiki has the format where I can specify the cells. This was pretty simple.
In a similar way I am trying to implement in Mediawiki. But I donot see any options for creating the cells ( rows and columns). There are only few options for formatting like "Bold" "interlink" "Heading" etc....
I was thinking that I need to create the tables in Mysql and thanks for clearing me out that MediaWiki uses Mysql only to store the data and not to create...
Can you help me now how can i create columns; say for example....
Machine NameTypeOS
Hope its clear now. let me know if you need any info...
I appreciate your patience in making me understand this . Thank you.
Thanks,
Vani M

Well, from your original message I presume you mean a table within the
database, not just a table as in a grid with some rows and columns and
so on. In which case, as I say, I think you've misunderstood the
nature of MediaWiki, or at least its capabilities. [If I'm wrong on
that, please ignore the rest of this message and we'll start again!]
If you are entirely new to the software, and want to know what it can
be used for, and how, I suggest you to take a look at the
documentation at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Contents As I
say, it is not a "browser" for arbitrary data, but rather a system for
collaboratively creating and editing, and of course viewing, a website
- particularly a "reference book" style one, such as wikipedia.org.
If you already know this much (in which case I apologise if the above
seems condescending) I can only think that you have stumbled across
some reference to or discussion of the "Wikidata" proposal. (As
described at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikidata) In which case, I
should clarify that so far this is *nothing more than a proposal*; as
far as I know, no actual code has actually been written, and it is
certainly not possible to do any database manipulation using the
current software.
The database is there only as a storage mechanism for the actual
content; there is no mechanism for the user to directly access
database structures through the software, or for content to be
generated from anything other than a page of special wiki-markup.
There might be in the future, but when that will be is, essentially,
anyone's guess. I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I don't
think what you are trying to do is currently possible with MediaWiki.

Just insert " __TOC__ " at the desired location. (__NOTOC__ removes a TOC displayed by default).
Also take a look at your personal settings, there you can include an option to generate a TOC automatically
