Hello, I noticed there's no London/UK bid currently on Meta - any reason for this? The page states "Unofficial bids may be started as early as you like". Surely if we want to be in with a damn good chance we need to at least start the page now? I think I remember some discussion about not being able to book a venue (specifically universities) more than 12 months in advance, but still? Just wondering what people think.

Save your energy; the impression I have been given by a number of people - obviously unstated in writing but quite clearly otherwise - is that we will not have a hope in hell of getting it, indeed 2008 is already "assigned".

If it hasn't been decided we still have a chance. If it has, it would be good practice (and perhaps make us favourites for the next year?).

I think you missed the point that this year was also "good practice" and demonstrated that Wikimania UK, and a lot of people outside of the organisation, are committed to researching things through and getting this stuff sorted well in advance. Rule Britannia, and all that.
While I don't agree that a bid shouldn't be entered, I do agree that wasting time preparing an unofficial bid, when no-one cares (Wikimania 2007 hasn't happened, that'll be on the radar blipping like there's no tomorrow until it does) at this stage.

Alison,
I wonder if you would share with us here exactly what you are talking about. Who are these people who have been giving that impression, and why is it "obviously unstated in writing".
At the present time, I am unaware of ANY reason to think that Wikimania 2008 will not be wide open to any and all participants.
I would find it quite disappointing if any group felt discouraged from making a bid because of unspecified and unsupported "impressions" which are "obviously unstated in writing".
At the present time, it has not even been determined whether 2008 will be a single Wikimania, multiple regional events, nor has it been decided who will decide, what kind of process will be used, etc.
If Alison has information that I don't have, I hope she will share it.

For what it's worth, and I know this is the wrong forum to discuss it, but that evil little foundation-l list is full of sharks, and I know I'm more or less inactive right now, and so won't be commenting a huge amount, but I feel that a multiple regional events option would be good to investigate, even if it's found not to be feasible.

I read some people are thinking they're going to hold it on an Airbus 380...er...yeah

Wikimania 2008 has not been assigned. Neither was 2007, despite the very unfair accusations suggesting Taipei won on location not merit.

And there you were saying on foundation-l you didn't feel discouraged at all ...

She wouldn't be the first person to contrive a bit of blag on foundation-l.

Again, just to make sure this rumor doesn't get new legs, no one but no one in charge of anything has any idea why Alison thinks or thought this. She must have overheard something unstated in writing from someone who thought they knew something which they didn't, or similar.
