Hi, I've been discussing with a few people (not on this list) about forming a group of people in and around Manchester who are interested in free culture - for seminars, workshops, and other related activities. There have been a few very small and informal meetings so far - but we're planning to involve a diverse range of people and groups, and organise a first 'proper' meeting in February.
So, this mail is for two things. Firstly, if anyone on this list is interested in such a group, you can contact me offlist for now - as we don't yet have a website or mailing list. Which brings me to the second point - which is to ask whether Wikimedia UK could support such locally-based activities by, for example, hosting a mailing list, wiki, and/or other webspace? It seems to me to be well within WMUK's remit - but I'd like to hear what other people on this list think.
Also, please feel free to forward this mail to any other people or groups you think might be interested.
Thanks, Cormac
Although i dont speak for everyone i think that supporting something like this would be something that the chapter would be interested in supporting. However, for the time being i think that it beyond the chapter to provide any form of hosting. We are attempting to seek our own hosting right now so it may be some time before we can offer such hosting services. Prehaps using this mailing list would be a suitable option for the time being as i think it is well within our remit. I think both the MFCP and WMUK's can offer each other alot and as we both grow can support each other.

It's certainly within the chapter's remit, but probably not within our capabilities. At the moment we're looking to get hosting on WMF servers, so we can't offer anyone else hosting. Come back in a year and things may have reached a point where we can help. If there's anything else the chapter can do, though, please ask - I think it's a fabulous idea and is definitely something the chapter should support.
i for one have spare hosting, so im sure dependant on the needs hosting wouldn't be a problem. just got to ask round. if you want to email your needs offlist ill see what i can do, if you want
regards

I also don't see any problem with the WMF hosting a mailing list--we have a number of locally user-based email lists for entities which have no interest in forming a chapter (Wikimedia-sf to name one) and I see no problem with the creation of a Wikimedia-man-uk (or something like that).

It sounds like this is intended to be something broader than Wikimedia. Is the WMF happy to host mailing lists for general free culture stuff with no direct connection to Wikimedia?

Yes, it is of course related to Wikimedia's work, but will be broader in scope, and not necessarily be connected to Wikimedia per se. However, I intend to be more involved in WMUK, as well as this group - and I'd imagine there will be others involved in both groups - so inevitable crossovers will emerge. But I very much appreciate Cary's offer, as well as the other supportive comments. :-)

One possibility is that, once we have a wiki set up, part of it could be used for MFCG, similar to how Wikimedia UK is currently hosted on part of the meta wiki. Would that be adequate for your purposes? It would obviously have to be approved in a board meeting if it was.
Alternatively, as Mark says, ask around. I also have spare webspace, which it might be possible for MFCG to use.

Thanks for this, Mike. I'm still looking into what I can arrange on my own bat (or with help!) - and a big consideration for me right now is to have something in place soon, so I can at least point people to a place they can get more information or be kept in the loop. But, whatever hosting arrangements we work out, I certainly want to sustain links between this local initiative, and the wider one of WMUK.
