It sounds like this is intended to be something broader than
Wikimedia. Is the WMF happy to host mailing lists for general free
culture stuff with no direct connection to Wikimedia?

Yes, it is of course related to Wikimedia's work, but will be broader in scope, and not necessarily be connected to Wikimedia per se. However, I intend to be more involved in WMUK, as well as this group - and I'd imagine there will be others involved in both groups - so inevitable crossovers will emerge. But I very much appreciate Cary's offer, as well as the other supportive comments. :-)
