Hi Tom,
I think it is more a matter of what standards "we" (as the membership)
should expect from a) the board and b) WMUK the firm (which is undoubtedly
what it is).
I value you your contributions because you are always pushing "us" (the
membership, the board and the staff, i.e. the firm as a whole) to raise
our standards. Often what you propose is quite practicable, if it wasn't
for the other activities the organisation is doing. It is Jon's job to
organise those priorities. You may disagree with how he goes about that,
as no doubt we all shall from time to time. However, I am not sure how
helpful it is to question his good faith, short of supplying pretty clear
evidence to support what your saying.
You have drawn certain conclusions from previous experience, but I do not
think that is anyway indicative of any lack of good faith. From my own
experience of dealing with the office - and indeed as reflected on the
list - one problem seems to be we have all been over-ambitious about what
we want to achieve. This has lead to the office becoming very hectic, with
a certain amount of over work. With current plans to recruit more staff,
this should lead a situation when WMUK (the firm) can more closely realise
the sort of standards which you advocate.
Please don't hold back from raising these issues and advocating more
exacting standards - just be a bit more understanding if they are not
always met.
all the best
Fabian

First, many thanks to all who have sent kind messages after my
resignation, here, on the blog & elsewhere. They are much appreciated.
On the board issues, I agree with Tango, especially as the Compass
review will be out shortly, which (sneak preview) has things to say
about the composition of the board, which will probably influence the
next election. Saad of course is "semi-elected" as he is the runner-up
in the last election with the highest votes who still wants to be on the
board.

Hi all,
Things are indeed looking pretty good for the London Wikimania bid. We've
been preparing some stuff that we'll put online come the board meeting this
weekend, so please hang onto your hats until then!

The deadline for people the create bids for Wikimania 2014 has now
passed. London is the only official bid on the bidding page, although
there is an unofficial bid from Tanzania that is active so will
probably more up the page soon. So far, the Tanzanian bid doesn't look
particularly credible (although that may change as they improve their
bid page), so it seems London is in with an excellent chance. In that
light, can we get an update from the bid team?
In particular, the logistics page says a fundraising website would
launch in January and there would be a event for sponsors in February.
Can we get an update on those?
Thanks!
Hello everyone,
John Byrne has announced that he is standing down as Treasurer and Trustee
of Wikimedia UK. The full text of the announcement can be found on our blog
at http://bit.ly/Yu8xsW
We thank him for his efforts and wish him well. We're looking forward to
his continued contributions as a volunteer.
Thanks and regards,
Stevie

All,
If you have outstanding expenses, now is the time to get them in, as I've
started working through the 2012-13 accounts.
ASAP please - if you can't get them in, please let me know a rough amount
so that I can count it into the figures as an estimate.
All the best,

*QRpedia - the current position.*
There is some interest on where we are with QRpedia and much speculation. I
wanted to respond as I take the interest seriously.
WMUK is currently negotiating in good faith with Roger Bamkin and his
colleague Terence Eden with regard to ownership of QRpedia.
This has been a complicated process and is ongoing.
After several attempts to reach agreement the board of WMUK has entrusted
negotiations to Saad Choudri, a trustee who is a practising copyright
lawyer. He has been reporting regularly to me, and the board, as to the
negotiations.
I can understand that our community may feel that this is a process that
has continued for far too long and I'm sure everyone involved would agree
with this.
However I do not think an acceptable agreement will come any more quickly
if we rehearse the many and complicated arguments on this list.
What I can assure you is that the trustees understand the need to reach an
agreement soon or disassociate the charity from any involvement in QRpedia.
We will let the community know as soon as we have something to report.
Jon.
