All,
I've been asked by the board to send out the following statement on their
behalf. This will be passed on to the full membership shortly, but it was
though prudent to get it out to the mailing list tonight.
The Board of Wikimedia UK today announced the appointment of Chris Keating
as its new Chair. This appointment is effective immediately.
Doug Taylor, another leading Wikimedian with thirty years experience of the
non-profit and charity sectors was appointed Vice Chair in support.
Chris has a background in fundraising and campaigning, and he is a
long-standing Wikipedia editor and administrator. Elected to the Board of
Wikimedia UK in April 2011, his main priority is making sure Wikimedia UK
communicates well with the Wikimedia community and with our other
supporters. His skills and experience will be invaluable as he leads us
through a busy, productive and important period.
The Board wishes to thank Ashley Van Haeften for his excellent
contributions as Chair of our charity. There is no doubt that he will
continue to perform well as a Trustee and volunteer, particularly in his
GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) work, where he is a
leader in the field. He continues as Chair of the Wikimedia Chapters
Association
This change in leadership will not affect the day to day operations of
Wikimedia UK as a functioning charity. The Board looks forward to
supporting the Wikimedia community as we continue to work towards our
objectives.
On behalf of the Board of Wikimedia UK,
Richard Symonds

Good afternoon all,
Jon Davies, our Chief Executive, has just posted the following message
regarding the call for an EGM on the UK Wiki:
"I have discussed this matter with Fae this morning. He is keen that there
should be no division in the WMUK community over his role as Chair,
especially at a time when so many great things are being achieved. He has
therefore resigned as Chair. A board meeting, already scheduled for this
evening, will see the election of a new Chair. Jon Davies

Dear All,
I have now updated in detail the section on this Wiki regarding the survey
questions that we would like to ask donors. I am keen to resolve these and
look to open the survey by the end of next week if possible.
I would be grateful if you could have a look and make changes/leave comment
by mid-next week (Wednesday 8th August) so I can then aim to get the survey
live and the link emailed to donors at the beginning of the following week.
There are bits that may interest you all - such as the examples of projects
we fund (are they summarised effectively? Are there some we much
include/exclude?)
Also - I'm very happy to take further suggests for online survey tools -
I'm due to speak to Qualtrics representatives for an online demo this
afternoon.
Thanks,

Hi,
I'm Jess. I'm glad to join the list.
I don't know anyone in the Galleries Libraries Archives and Museums. I
could ask archivists if they know someone there.
I like the idea of volunteer training for less rare items so digitization
can be done in-house.

In light of recent events and discussions on this list, I have started
a call for an EGM to discuss the situation regarding Fae. You can find
the call and an explanation here:
http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Call_for_EGM_2012
We require 13 members to sign it in order to require the Board to call
an EGM (and a few extras wouldn't hurt just in case), so if you want
to have an EGM and are a member, please add your name. Please note,
signing this request just says you want to have a meeting, it doesn't
say anything about whether you think Fae should stay on the board or
not. You'll have the opportunity to give your views on that at the
meeting.
Thank you.
Tom
Hi all,
I'm sending this statement on behalf of the WMUK Board:
--
As some members of Wikimedia UK will know, our Chair, Ashley Van Haeften, user name Fae, has been the subject of sanctions by the Arbitration Committee of the English Wikipedia (Arbcom), the volunteer committee that exists to provide binding remedies to Wikipedia disputes. In particular, he has been banned from editing the English language Wikipedia for at least the next six months, after which he can appeal the ban.
The Board of Wikimedia UK notes the decision of Arbcom.
The Board is united in the view that this decision does not affect his role as a Trustee of the charity. His work at Wikimedia UK has always been enthusiastic and diligent. In particular, his knowledge of charity governance, and his ability to bring about consensus at WMUK's board meetings, have been particularly valuable.
The Board points out that the editing issues were fully public before, and during, the recent elections to the board, and were openly and publicly discussed. Our membership placed their trust in him by electing him as a Trustee. He was then elected unanimously as Chair of the Board. He continues to have the full support of the Board.

What the WMF does for us is, among other things: allow us to use their
trademarks, provide the servers & technical support that run the
projects, develop and support MediaWiki, provide research and some
support in specialized areas, and fund development of the movement
globally. That is why we give them most of our income.
The relationship between the WMF and the chapter is set out in the
various agreements between us, and was also summarized in the
submissions last year to the Chiraty Commission; one of their big
concerns was our independence.
