>From 20 - 22 July 2012 we are looking forward to hosting the first
Edinburgh Photography Workshop. The intent is to improve photography
skills amongst attendees, share the tricks of the trade and show how to
make the most of your photographs throughout Wikimedia's projects,
focusing on Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia.
Several currently non-Wikimedians from Edinburgh have already shown their
interest in the workshop and are keen on learning more about photography
and Wikimedia's projects.
If interested, the project page for the workshop is here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Scotland/Edinburgh_Phot…
We're now up to a dozen signed-up attendees, although there's some concern
Peter may not be able to get over from Hamburg due to WM-DE possibly not
resolving funding issues.
Once the workshop is over, I'll provide a brief report on how it's gone so
anyone interested in running a similar event can do so.
Brian.
Robin Owain and I met Leighton Andrews (today) who is the Education
Minister for Wales. The meeting arose out of the work that we are doing in
Wales. This means Monmouthpedia and the Welsh Wicipedia (yes its spelt with
a c). The meeting lasted less than 45 minutes but we covered
- Who we are? About WMUK, WMCY, Monmouthpedia. We noted especially that
WMCY is the leading web site in Welsh.
- Welsh phone. There is no phone that will switch truly into Welsh. We
had already tried getting his officials to ask and Google had said "maybe".
Leighton agreed to ask personally.
- Welsh encyclopedia. There is a bilingual Welsh and English
encyclopedia that was published in the last few years. Leighton said he
would see if the copyright could be released to grow WMCY.
- Could Wales be the leading nation for information freedom? Leighton
said he would challenge his fellow ministers with this question.
- The minister said that he was supportive of the idea that information
should be made commercially available freely. ie CC BY SA
- He would ask the Heritage minister about what could be done to free
more data.
- Note: There is an experiment currently in progress to release 150
images from multiple sources to Wikimedia Commons. The objective is to find
out why thousands more images could not be freely released. This is a WMUK
(And Monmouthshire County Council) inspired initiative.

I have been following the transfer from British Waterways to "Canal &
River Trust". They have now begun business, and as a registered charity,
they want your money.
https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/get-involved/donate-now
"CRT" have launched "Friends" package.
****
Become a Friend today and as part of your Friends pack you’ll receive
discounts to museums and attractions, and lots more benefits to help you
get even more out of your visits to the waterways.
****
Wikimedia UK has members, but no Friends. Perhaps this should change?

P.S. Nobody in their right mind would use an ampersand in their legal
name in the age of the web, would they?

Hello everyone,
I've recently drafted a communications strategy for WMUK based on
preliminary discussions on the UK wiki
here<http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/2012_Communications_Review>
.
I'd be really grateful for your thoughts and input on the strategy. You can
find it here<http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WMUK_comms_strategy_v1.2.pdf>.
It's
quite a lengthy document so if you'd prefer to see an abridged version
which contains only the recommendations please take a look
here<http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Comms_strategy_extract_-_recommendations.…>
.
If you could send over any comments, suggestions or questions to me by the
end of Friday 6 July that would be great.
Thank you for your help,
Stevie

Which is to say http://digital.humanities.ox.ac.uk/dhoxss/, a summer
school in digital humanities. My intuition is that we need to connect
GLAM with DH as soon as possible, as one part (there are others
clearly) of getting a sustainable GLAM 2.0 model.
I'm not sure about how to do that, but I think I'm going to continue
asking for a bit. I normally march in the opposite direction from
anything saying "semantic web". But I'd be very interested to know how
WMUK does for contacts in this area of endeavour.
