There's a thread on wikimedia-l at the moment about Photography at the
Olympics. I realise it is somewhat late in the day but is is possible to
add this onto the agenda for the directors meeting tonight?
Is there the possibility of WMUK making a statement to denounce the
position of the Olympic Committee in relation to this - it might get press
interest.

Dear stakeholder,
We're writing to inform you that today, Thursday 26 July 2012, the
Government published the responses it received during its consultation on
Copyright. The Government received 471 responses from interested parties.
The submitted responses, with the exception of confidential submissions,
are accessible via the Intellectual Property Office website, found here:
http://www.ipo.gov.uk/consult-copyright-response.htm
The Government had initially planned to publish the full set of responses
alongside its summary published on 14 June 2012. However, in the course of
reviewing the responses received, it became clear that a small number of
respondents had advanced criticisms or inappropriately criticised the
activities of others in the sector. The Government has now carefully
reviewed the submissions to establish any potentially defamatory material
and has redacted any inappropriate or defamatory comments. Signatures or
personal telephone numbers and email addresses have also been redacted for
information security purposes.
Thirteen (13) organisations submitted after the consultation closed, and
their late submissions are also available in the Intellectual Property
Office website, found here:
http://www.ipo.gov.uk/pro-policy/consult/consult-closed/consult-closed-2011…
The Government would like to thank you, and all those who took the time to
contribute to the Consultation.

Those who read the signpost or follow arbcom for whatever reason will
know that “Fæ is indefinitely banned from the English Language
Wikipedia. He may request reconsideration of the ban six months after
the enactment of this remedy, and every six months thereafter.”
This is incompatible with him remaining chair and for that matter a
board member.
The English wikipedia is by far the most significant project WMUK is
involved with and having a board member blocked from it causes a
number of problems.
Firstly within the Wikimedia community. Its bit much to ask English
wikipedia editors to work with an organisation who's board members
include someone banned from the project. Other chapters are also
likely to take the pragmatic approach of avoiding dealing with any
other chapter that could be considered to have problematic board
members. While non en.wikipedia projects may continue to work with us
the working with a banned user aspect would in all probability be used
by those members of such projects to assert their “not en-wikipedia”
status. This is something it would be deeply unwise for WMUK to get
involved with.
Outside the Wikimedia community it also present a number of issues.
Obviously there are the public relations issues. It simply doesn't
look good and can be used against WMUK, en.wikipedia and the wider
project. This is not consistent with WMUK's goals. But that aside
consider the Society of Biology Wikipedia workshop on the 29th. Fae is
as a banned user will be limited in the extent he can show people how
to edit en.wikipedia and if the issue does arise it is likely to be
more than mildly disruptive to the session to say the least. Asking
Fae not to attend such sessions isn't really a solution as a chair of
the board we can't be seen in public with isn't a good place to be.
On a purely technical level looking at the Articles of Association Fae
can resign. Alternatively its possible that he could be removed by a
general meeting (although it isn't entirely clear) Since the AGM is 10
months away an EGM would be required. A final option is that the
directors could remove him as a member which has the effect of
removing him as a director. Takes 21 days mind.

All,
Just to let you know that you can now write "FREEPOST WIKIPEDIA", in
capitals, on an envelope, and pop it in the post - it'll come to the
office. There's no need for a stamp.
This is mainly designed to make it easier for donors to contact us, but it
will work fine for volunteers, too, obviously - although the charity will
be paying for postage on anything you send, so try and keep the weight down
if you can :-)
All the best,
Richard Symonds

Dear all,
Society of Biology (12 Roger Street, London WC1N 2JU) has contacted
Wikimedia UK with a request to have a introductory Wikipedia training run
for them on Wednesday* 29 August*, 10am-4pm. The event is a result of a
long lasting discussion, which shows there are a couple of people from
within the Society really interested in making this happen.
If the initial training goes well, we will have another session where we
train up a handful of key contact within the Society. They will then be
able to look after the editing of Biology content, hopefully providing help
for anyone else from within the Society who would also be interested in
editing.
I have created a simple page with the details:
http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Society_of_Biology_Wikipedia_workshop
If you would like to run/help run this session, please do sign up on the
page or let me know. You can also get in touch if you have any questions.
Many thanks

You don't have to be there at 10, though. It's all on a drop-in basis.
I said 10 to 1 because they probably want the table for lunch by 1,
but I'm free to spin the thing out if lunch is wanted by others.
Skype is possible in theory but I wouldn't count absolutely either on
the wifi or on the extended interest.
I think I may spend time hacking out the basic training "syllabus",
which is one item high up the agenda, and this is a thing worth
discussing collectively in early drafts. There is also a "single-sign
on" issue for which I have a new clue today; and we can hash out
"training for trainers" and implications.
It would be good to have anyone who finds the general area interesting
contributing. There was a big emphasis at Wikimania on support for
newbies, in particular, and Peter Coombe gave a presentation on his
fellowship work on the enWP help pages. What is proposed for online
modules should work hand-in-glove with that whole effort, and it is
more a question of getting to the detail than justifying what I'm up
to. I'm hoping a consistent WMUK approach will emerge.
If anyone really needs Skype presence, mail me Friday and I'll let you
know my Skype contact. Clueful people coming along with laptops would
definitely be an asset. I'll be bringing A4 and a pen ...
