Dear all,
As Jon Davies has been in post for a little over a year, we're coming up to
his annual performance appraisal. In line with HR good practice, all our
staff have this kind of review, and they're an important opportunity for
reflection and learning.
As we prepare for Jon's review, I would like to invite anyone who feels
they have comments to make, whether congratulatory, critical or both, to
get in touch - I'm keen to get views from people who have worked with Jon
over the last year, not just the current Board. Comments should be made
with reference to the Chief Executive job description (1) and should be
emailed to myself and John Byrne before 9 November. John and I will read
and consolidate all the feedback prior to the review meeting.
If you have any questions or would like more details of the process, please
do get in touch.
Many thanks,
Chris

2012 public engagement with research project appeals. I have contacted

I am also a PR person and a Wikipedian (user "Paul W" - since 2003). I

Dear Wikimedians,
The UK GLAM working group is now ready to find UK institutions willing to
work with us by creating Wikipedian in Residence posts.
Our budget is limited, and must be used by January 31st, but there is
enormous scope to be flexible. These could be day a week, limited term
posts, based at home - or full time positions at an institution, like the
British Library post. We will of course be pleased to see applications
from institutions with whom we have already begun a positive relationship -
but note that the applications have to be from the institutions, rather
than individual volunteers.
Time is very short - our own fault - so we need bids, on the attached form,
in by 5pm on November 15th to daria.cybulska(a)wikimedia.org.uk. She will be
convening a panel to make the decisions that will be recommended to the
board, hopefully at the meeting of November 17/18.
Please feel free to spread this around the various lists (and externally if
you can).

ENGAGE 2012: Responding to Change
The National Coordinating Centre for Public Engagement is hosting a number
of specialist workshops targeted at anyone passionate about the role of
public engagement including: community groups, schools, festivals, museums
and galleries, voluntary sector and charities wanting to develop more
effective engagement work in partnership with the HE sector.
The workshops take place at 09.30 on Wednesday 5th December in three
central Bristol locations. There are a limited number of FREE PLACES
available to organisations that partner universities.
· MSHED – The People’s Museum: Exploring the challenges and
opportunities of museums and universities working together in the city,
illustrated by the story of the M-Shed.
· Public Engagement with Health: Exploring how engagement has been
embedded into research practice, and what we can learn from this important
field.
· Creative Partnerships: Exploring the experience of working with
universities and on the strategies, techniques and approaches that
university partners have deployed to develop successful partnerships.
For more information about the workshops and speakers:

To register for these workshops:

Why are we organising these events?
The National Coordinating Centre for Public Engagement (NCCPE) works with
universities to help enhance the social and public value of their research
and teaching. Since 2008 we have been working with universities, policy
makers and funders to embed a culture of public engagement in the work that
universities do. However, much of the engagement activity universities do
is in partnership with other organisations, which have strong links and
networks in the community. These include schools, festivals, museums and
galleries, and voluntary sector organisations and charities. These
specialist workshops form an important part of our third national
conference Engage 2012. To find out more about the conference and our work

Hello everyone,
We've just published a blog post that summarises the story of Ada Lovelace

for a couple of months. You can see the post at

Dear all,
I earlier today published a list of the decisions that had been made
regarding theses areas as recorded on the public wiki.
It has been brought to my attention that there are significant gaps e.g.
Mention of the evolution of Qr codes in the Derby project which could make
this digest misleading.
However all the information is up there on the wiki.
Apologies for any confusion this may have caused. It was done with good
intentions in order to assist an understanding of what happened.
Jon Davies.

A community member suggested I share this link with you.
I thought it would be a useful idea to highlight exactly what happened in
WMUK board and exec meetings regarding the issues around MonmouthpediA,
GiibraltarpediA and QR codes so had this analysis made. If anyone spots
ommisions please let Richard Symonds know. (I am on hols from Friday
lunchtime)
All this is of course available on the minutes on the wiki but it may be
helpful.

P.S. Yes I know it is a google doc. I am evil and will be punished in

I pinged wikitech-l. Well, it's in ops' queue, and they've been pinged recently!

This issue is still waiting on movement from the operations to be resolved.
There are a few facets to the problem that we've been trying to resolve
simultaneously:
1) A while back we pushed out changes to the code that handles automatic
redirection of mobile devices to mobile versions of the projects that sent
anyone trying to access *.wikimedia.org who met the redirect rules to *.
m.wikimedia.org (except for commons, bits, office, and donate). We did this
thinking we had a definitive list of *.wikimedia.org domains and all had
corresponding .m domains. This was an error. Before making further changes
to the regular expression that handles the redirection, the mobile team was
asked by ops to make some changes to the C code to make it easier to update
the rules (instead of relying on a hard-coded regex in the c code itself,
load a config file containing redirect rules). Max has made the requested
changes, the changes have undergone a security review, but we are still
waiting for ops to merge and deploy the changes (
https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/27035/). Max is working on updating the
redirect rules, pending the approval of the aforementioned changes.
2) We've requested that a uk.m.wikimedia.org subdomain be created in the
interim to alleviate the problem and simultaneously requested that all
wikimedia.org subdomains have a .m subdomain created as well. The RT ticket
with the request was filed Oct 5 (
https://rt.wikimedia.org/Ticket/Display.html?id=3661), but has yet to be
remarked or acted upon.
The ops team is certainly *very* busy, but hopefully we will see movement
on these soon.
