Times of India in Bangalore front page article about the Karnataka budget says there is Rs 1 Cr for Sanskrit Wikipedia.
Anyone know anything about this?

Personally, I'd be careful not to jump to conclusions just because they've used the word "Wikipedia" in the announcement.
Two years back, the budget said "Rs XYZ Crores for Wikipedia in Kannada" and that turned out to be for a project the government wanted to do "on the lines of" Kannada Wikipedia, but one that had full editing control. They did not even know that there was an already existing Kannada Wikipedia. The project was later named "KaNaja" (http://kanaja.in).

Yea. I remember that announcement 2 years back and then it got converted into an internal project.
But, a good opportunity for advocacy here. Perhaps some chapter members should meet the department officials and try and get co-opted into the decision-making process. Often, it is lack of information and trust that scares them. Unlike 2 years, back with the chapter in place and most of us quite well networked, we should get involved closely and see if we can get them to invest in improving the sanskrit and kananda wikis.
Strangely, I don't see this in any other paper other than TOI? Anybody got another link?

Just checked with my sources in the government - and what I hear is that the allocated funds *isn't* for Sanskrit Wikipedia, but a project "on the lines" of Sanskrit Wikipedia, but perhaps with editing control.

The government usually prefers a project with editing control rather than one without any direct control over content decisions made.
Just checked with a former colleague in the Railway Board. It's a wikipedia "kind" on solution for internal use.

Dear hp nadig,
Which department will be incharge of such wikipedia like projects?
May be it can be used for releasing the content and images under wikipedia complaint license, even if they keep editing control

The state Knowledge Commission.
From the state budget speech here (
http://www.kar.nic.in/finance/bud2011/bsp2011.htm), it appears this is a grant to Sanskrit Bharathi
- To develop Sanskrit Wikipedia, Rs 1 crore would be provided as a
grant to Sanskrit Bharathi.

Sanskrit Bharathi volunteers were generally keen on our Sanskrit Wikipedia. Arunram and others have conducted Wiki academies for them. Probably good idea to take them more into confidence with our movement.
While Kerala & TN governments have chosen to go with the Wikipedia, it is sad that Karnataka government is always trying to reinvent the wheel. May be we are not reaching out with them properly.
It may be a good idea to set up a Chapter task force for government liaisons and policy making, which includes those folks who have done these kind of stuff successfully more than those who have contacts.

Shiju had conducted a workshop on the basics of editing Wikipedia last week in Sanskrit Bharati, Girinagar (which is probably the same organisation that TOI refers to). I had also been there, and am in touch with the representative from Sanskrita Bharati. Surprisingly the representative mentioned nothing about any grant applied when we had a talk.

Karnataka is finding difficulty in getting funds from Congress Govt. from New Delhi. This is for its basic requrements. The shaky govt. is facing problems from Opposition party once, and some times from the hard nuts of the ruling party.
Besides Karnataka govt is having its own Site, similar to Wikipedia. (Started last year) They are not ever aware of Wikipedia !
So, it is hard to expect the funds ( One crore rupees !) for the develpent of Wikipeda is night mare idea....

A quick note to say yes, do know the people who moved this request. We will need to be validate this as is with all things government.
We can discuss this in the evening meetup. I have requested the gentleman involved in this to come to the evening meetup.
I am hoping he can make it. More when we meetup. More details later.
