I suddenly realised that amongst the guys who signed up for WikiProject India in Jan-Feb are such hardcore Wikipedians as RSrikanth05, Joyson Prabhu, Karthikndr & Sitush.
Which brings me to the corollary - there are oodles of established Indian editors who are not yet members of WikiProject India!
Gosh, guys please sign up!

Th life cycle theory is very much applicable here. I've come across several retired editors who retired because they were students who now had work commitments or working people who wanted to free up some time. Then we also have politics.

According to your theory, shouldn't the ranks be replenished by new editors who are still in colleges and Universities?

Should be. Yes. However do remember, new users editing was on a steady decline thru 2010. To add to it, remember the IEP and the negative publicity it generated. Enough to scare new users away.

I don't think IEP criticism went mainstream in India. It has probably got more to do with the fact that pages on the encyclopedia (even about general Indian topics) look complete and thorough. We will have to work on marketing and design a campaign that makes it easy for prospective long-term contributors to grasp what Wikipedia's all about.
We should think about working on highly targeted campaigns augmented by real life events - something like "Wikimedia Bollywood Project" using geo-targeted banner campaigns which may elicit interest from potential contributors by making them more aware about how we function. Design and proper marketing can take us a long way.

Also the fact that availability of RS affects. Infact I would say that as one of reason for my non-involvment in the WP:INR workgroup. We created most of content from MoRTH and available RS which are worthy enough to be on encyclopedia. There is so much to add about Indian Roads, but where are the sources :(
Naveen found WP:INEI , but then I was "hijacked" to Tamil Wiki :D
Agree with Logic. India Road Transport articles are babies in comparision with their American or European counterparts. There is so much to add, stuff that I've seen myself but camou add it because of lack of sources. I had posted about this last year. Yesterdays featured article was a highway btw.

:-) Thank goodness, too!
But this commercialisation aspect is one that was asked at the WikiAcademy. It is important to explain the ethos right from the beginning. In fact, once this case is resolved, it would be good to have it documented so that it can be used to strongly illustrate the point.

True. The age old What's in it for me? syndrome. Tell new users that contributing to Wikipedia is rewarding in non monetary ways. Money may make the world go round, but Money does not buy you the simple joys of editing.
And a few editors decided to work on real life outreach programmes ... :)

I am thinking the title of "gaon budhas" or "village elders" be given
to
such people :)

I suddenly realised that amongst the guys who signed up for WikiProject India in Jan-Feb are such hardcore Wikipedians as RSrikanth05, Joyson Prabhu, Karthikndr & Sitush.
Which brings me to the corollary - there are oodles of established

editors who are not yet members of WikiProject India!
Gosh, guys please sign up!

I think we need to contact dormant editors and ask them why they stopped editing.
Here is something to think about - is there such a thing as a "lifecycle of a Wikipedia" where a person goes through stages & finally burns out?
Just found some WikiHumor related to this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Seven_Ages_of_Wikipedians
Only one 'age' appears to be missing: the age when the Wikipedian decides that one might as well earn some money editing Wikipedia, even though it is expressly forbidden and hugely frowned upon. They then hire themselves out to ponytailed education businessmen, and when this is discovered, many Wikipedians express their deep sorrow and regret, and remember the good old days when X was such a straight arrow.
Thanks Ashwin, added my name..:)
