Hello,
This is User:Rangilo_Gujarati here basically from Gujarat and now in Pune, am planning an outreach event most probably a workshop in MS University Baroda, Gujarat during their forthcoming technical festival Footprintshttp://www.msu-footprints.org/. Also am the Campus Ambassador for India Education Program too, I need some input from you guys.
The organizers of this event have basically no idea about what a community is or how WP works, since I ll be targeting newbies I am planning to start from Introduction to WP, then an editing session and main motto behind this would be to start an active community in Baroda or Gujarat and get the contributors to EN and GU WP and commons too.
Now the organizers are asking few questions like "Why anyone should attend it?", "What would be the exclusivity of the workshop?", "How can we (university and attendees) be benefited from this?". They are worried too much about "exclusivity", how to convince them that these type of sessions are some thing more than "exclusively in Footprints", "first time in gujarat" ??
Since I have no experience in conducting an outreach workshop independently I want your feedback on it, and what possibly should I answer them?.
Please do reply with your valuable suggestions/critics.
Hey Arnav, I'll be in Gujarat post 12th Dec. I helped organize the 10th meetup in Delhi. If you need my help, I'd love to :) Warmly Noopur

Thanks, the event is on 24, 25, 26 February 2012.
I just need answer of above questions to convince them to allow me to come there and conduct a workshop. Would love to have around there at that time if possible.

Hello! Sorry for inbox spamming :) Sitting in the GLAMcamp, I cannot stop thinking how our community is doing so much and not getting highlighted, especially all you Indic editors out there. Though I don't really "belong" to the Wiki-geeks group, I think an excellent way of outreach is GLAM events. They are simple to understand, easier to participate and fun things :) In response to Arnav's mail, I thought I'll put this idea on the table. I think fests like Footprints, or bigger fests such as Mood Indigo are excellent places to set a booth and do some outreach. We could have a photography event (which we call Wiki loves monuments) and get students to get us images. We already have rules for the event and we can arrange a small prize or swags. That way, you don't have to specially call people to places or events and same time we start smaller and have sure results. What we essentially need is a wiki-geek (or an experienced editor as you call it) and someone who can communicate the idea well. What do you guys think? I have friends at Mood Indigo and if Bombay people are willing to take me up on it, we can have a stall there too! Warmly Noopur

hi Arnav,
I would say a Wikipedia editing workshop or a chapter backed WikiAcademy would be a nice first step. The only thing that one can say to someone is that we will teach them how to edit Wikipedia and contribute to various Wikimedia projects. You can start by making this event exclusively with the college - that is, only members from the college (staff or students) can attend.
My personal take on this, is that we should do a couple of community meetups in Baroda and/or Surat and clue them into what's happening. I was in touch with Shiju to see if there are any Gujarati Wikipedia community members in the area. He's sent out a general email to them off-list. I will ping them again on email and see if we can do a community meetup in December or January. Perhaps you should try writing to the Gujarati mailing list as well.
Thank you for taking this initiative, Arnav!
warm regards, Pradeep

hi Noopur,
Hope you're enjoying your time in Amsterdam. We expect a longer report on list after you return to India on GLAMcamp. :)
I totally agree with you that we need to reach-out more at college fests and events. I think an email was sent around on the list about participating in the Calcutta (still not used to writing Kolkata) Book Fair as well. I think it is best to let community members learn about, inform and participate in the events. If and when an organisational affiliation is required, I''m sure that the Chapter will be able to provide the same.
Hope some of the members in the Bombay community will take you up on your Mood Indigo offer. :)

Changing the topic since I felt Arnavs idea might be applicable on a national level. Wikipedia completes 11 years in January 2012 (January 15th if my memory serves me right). Last year there were 97 meetups nationwide to celebrate Wikipedia 10. How about having a National Wikimedia Photo Scavenger Hunt in India to celebrate Wikipedia 11?
Im hoping something like this can tremendously increase photos from India to Commons.

There were 97 events on paper. I cannot recollect reading more than 10 reports. Practically we could say the number would have been around 20.Lets leave that aside. On the scavenger hunt, Tamil community already has one for 3 month long duration[1], we are also planning for Central Sitenotice for Indian IPs for 3-4 days in January. You could replicate the same, but be sure to add volunteer support based on the scale, otherwise it cant sustain, will have difficulties (Hey, didnt you learn that from WikiConference! :D)
Steps required for photo scavenger hunt.
1. Customize Upload Wizard, test it. 2. Create help documents, FAQs / videos. [2][3] 3. Create PR using media / social media. 4. Monitor for copyvios, tag them manually post verification.
-- We are still on process to learn more -- :D
The above activities took us around 30-45 days by a small community.

I thought this is similar to a photowalk, where people instead of meeting in a room go around and take pics. I stand corrected.

Even for a photowalk, customizing the uploadwizard will be good. Generally people upload elsewhere, never upload since people dont return to a room and sit / upload (unless there is a conscious meetup happening). There was a Chennai photowalk which failed on this part, and people met, clicked pics, but many never came online(30 pics came from 15 people for a whole day of hunt). HPN did some photowalks in Bangalore / Mysore, he had a better upload rate, though am not sure if everyone had uploaded every pic they clicked.
Bala, I was wondering, if we could organise a scanvenger hunt in Kovai on the 15th of Jan ??? --~~~~

Is there an APK or App in the Android Market, which I can use to upload pictures directly to creative commons from my Android Phone?
Sorry for this naive question, what is uploadwizard, is that a desktop application alone, do we have a similar Android App, or Can I customize or is there available any of the photo uploaders which I can use?

*The execution would be simple but needs a bit of spade work before and after, especially with copyvio detection. New editors usually misunderstand copyright policies and upload stuff that isnt their own work and it results in commons being overloaded.
Similarly if you a customised upload wizard, categorising and tagging with templates can be done automatically and will lower the burden on uploaders. Customisation of the upload wizard is easy but can be done only by an admin in commons. Tanvir did it for us (go Tanvir!), so knowing a commons admin eases things..

- Customize Upload Wizard, test it.
- Create help documents, FAQs / videos. [2][3]
- Create PR using media / social media.
- Monitor for copyvios, tag them manually post verification.
-- We are still on process to learn more -- :D
The above activities took us around 30-45 days by a small community.

I think an email was sent around on the list about participating in the Calcutta (still not used to writing Kolkata) Book Fair as well. I think it is best to let community members learn about, inform and participate in the events. If and when an organisational affiliation is required, I''m sure that the Chapter will be able to provide the same.

I think you have touched on a really important point and I've been reflecting on it. I think a pairing of experienced editors and reasonably informed newbies would be a very powerful combination.
Caveat to my follow sentences is that I run the risk of gross generalisations - but bear them out as reflective of one perspective out of others. One common refrain I hear from experienced community members is that the results from outreach efforts are sub-optimal. The numbers that one gets from outreach are always going to be low (after all, globally, ~90k people edit out of 450+m readers so the ratios are always going to be low. Informally, you will also hear that (some) attendees on sessions conducted by experienced wikipedians find the sessions passionate but too daunting and they find those conducted by newbies to be clear but somewhat inadequate. Can we arrive at a best of breed? However, there must be ways that we can work out how volunteer time in outreach and academies and workshops can get better results. I intend to share my thoughts on this in the next few days - but thank you for catalysing something in my head.
What do you guys think? I have friends at Mood Indigo and if Bombay people are willing to take me up on it, we can have a stall there too!
as above, +1!
Warmly Noopur
Thanks for this, Noopur.

It's best to not go prepared for a WikiAcademy. At the first WikiAcademy in Mumbai, although we had a list of things to show people, we never completed the list. This was because people wanted to know more about the interface and the way discussions happen and conversations between user happens (talk pages) along with the others. Being a bit of an academic crowd, they were also interested in question of what Wikipedia meant by neutral sources and the reliability of Wikipedia as a resource. (Thanks to Vickram Crishna for handling those questions :) ). We were quite happy with the result, in the end. So, it's pretty important that we do not be stiff about what they need to learn and what they do not need to learn.
However, each Wikipedian who does a WikiAcademy has his own style and we cannot and should not try to make these uniform, IMHO.

Absolutely agree. It is essential that individual / collective styles are always the basis of anything. I was thinking of supporting this by collating and sharing ideas - that individual Wikipedians can then chose to use / not use / adapt at will.
