Hi all.
Hope you are doing good.
This is to inform you all that due to academic reasons, *I wish to step down from the post of volunteer co-ordinator* for the *INCOTM WikiProject*.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_India/Collaborations_of_the_month
Being in my third year of engineering and a crucial phase of the journey, I wish to give more time to academics. Continuous assignments and mini-projects are always there in the pipeline for us and its getting difficult for me to manage INCOTM alongside the busy schedule. I can't give my 100% to the project and there are capable people who can devote complete time. Hence, I would like to bid adieu to INCOTM as a volunteer co-ordinator.
I have had an excellent experience working with Indian editors and collaborating with them. My work was appreciated and I got the privilege to be featured on main page of Wikimedia India as well. In the process, I got to learn a lot as well.
I would like to thank Ashwin Baindur (User:AshLin) for giving me the opportunity to lead a project of this caliber as well as Hisham Mundol and Nitika Tandon for their time to time motivation.
The *nominations for the post of new volunteer co-ordinator are open*. You can nominate yourselfhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_India/Collaborations_of_the_month#Nominations_for_new_volunteer_co-ordinatorand genuine editors can vote for you. Lets close this by the 25th of this month.
Though I am on an {{Education wikibreak}}, I will certainly come online and participate in the collaborations as an editor for sure. Thank you once again. As always, happy editing and happy collaborating! :-)
Thank you, Pratik, for all the wonderful work you have done around India COTM.
Sincerely,
anirudh

Hi,
Isn't this an En Wiki issue? Such mails should be sent only to
"Wikimedians working on India related content on English Wikipedia & related projects." wikimedia-in-en@lists.wikimedia.org
Please do not CC the general Wikipedia India mailing list.

This email falls within the ambit of the topics that can be discussed on this mailing list. Since Pratik is moving out of the project, it makes sense to send a message to the larger list in order to recruit potential volunteers who may be up for the task.
Given how we discuss all sorts of regional stuff on this list as well, I don't see how this is off-topic.
Thanks,

Anirudh,
This is an en wiki project issue and there is a dedicated mailing list for that at
"Wikimedians working on India related content on English Wikipedia & related projects." wikimedia-in-en@lists.wikimedia.org
If you cannot find a suitable volunteer from that mailing list or the project page in en wiki, I doubt that this mailing list will be of any help.
There are numerous projects running in each regional wiki. If there are any lessons to be learnt from them, they are welcome to share it with the larger Indic community.
Ravi
Ravi,
I think it is okay for such messages to be posted on WikimediaIndia-l. I see no reason why it should be unwelcome here.
Cheers,

During the time when I was the co-ordinator for the project, *I haven't sent a single mail to this mailing list*. I have carried out the discussions and also published reports on the mailing list you are referring to again and again.
It's only now, once I've resigned, I'm leaving a message to the larger community so that everyone comes to know. Also, not everyone on the India mailing list (who work primarily on en.wiki) might have subscribed to the English mailing list. So this makes a lot of sense. Peace out!
Ravi, Several en wiki contributors, [including but not limited to me] don't read mails on wikimedia-in-en. Some of us aren't on the list. In such situations, it makes sense to send them here as well.

Hi Hari, Arun, Pratik, Srikanth, Karthik,
Similar to the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:INCOTM/ project, we run a project in Tamil Wikipedia called Colloboration of the Week. I was co-ordinating it for few months. When I got busy, I intentionally let it unupdated for a week to see it picked up by another Wikipedian. He was also the guy most involved in this project from the beginning. I asked him if he is willing to take the responsibility and he said yes. That's it. I have seen many such smooth handovers for various jobs done in our Wikipedia.
In this context, I was surprised why Pratik calls this a "post" and had to send a "resignation note" to the larger mailing list and open "nominations" for successors. May be it is En Wiki practice but I found this too complicated for a simple situation.
If one cannot find a suitable coordinator from the members of the project listed at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:INCOTM/Members
I wonder how a newcomer to the project will be fit to coordinate it.
This is a regular Wikipedia activity which is best managed within talk pages and project noticeboards. This isn't a photo walk or a Wiki workshop to hope if more people can join us through mailing lists. Even if you go by that logic, if every regional Wikipedia starts mailing this list for coordinating on wiki tasks, then it will be total mess.
I respect every one's opinion that mails like these are within the scope of this list. If I continue to find such mails, I will simply unsubscribe :)

Several communities which function online use the mailing list as the primary source of communication and coordination. Ideally, the Wiki talk/coordination pages could/should be used for such activities but the downside is that a person has to be subscribed to individual page updates to be able to know that some discrete activity has happened and this is feasible for only expert wiki contributors and I am not sure if we are yet at that ideal level of expertise. Further, Wikipedia works on the community model and as you have acknowledged most wikipedians on this list are not averse to such mails. There is also a delete option in our email clients which allow us to delete mails which we do not want to read. I hope you can appreciate this and take a decision which is best suited for your interests. Thank you for your patience. With warm wishes, Vikram Vincent

Isn't English Wikipedia the most sophisticated and evolved one? Hint: Watch list.
If someone is not actively following a project, then how is he fit to coordinate it?

I wouldn't have brought up this conversation if this was just a spam issue. I simply felt that coordinating an on-wiki task through mailing list is not a best practice.

I'm not much aware of how the project in Tamil Wikipedia functions. Well, INCOTM on en.wiki is something huge. The reason I sent out this mail on this mailing list (after getting approval from Ashwin Baindur) was to inform the larger community. I feel sad to repeat the same thing again and again. Also, my method of working is different from yours. I feel that I should not just "handover", but ask everyone if they wish to apply for the post. If yes, let the people who are participating in the COTM's vote for them. This is how I work and will continue to work in the future, seeking everyone's opinion.
I could have easily called up any of my friends and they would have agreed. But someone might be interested as well and would feel bad later on not even being asked whether he/she wants to apply.

If you dint like those words, I'm sorry.

We are in the process of finding one. Hold on.

Look, I'm short of time and sending on this list gives me no pleasure.
There was a reason and a motive behind this, which I and other members have been repeatedly telling you.
I respect every one's opinion that mails like these are within the scope of this list. If I continue to find such mails, I will simply unsubscribe :)
Even I respect your opinion, and I mean it. But I find this conversation
is going somewhere else. The purpose was to get a new co-ordinator. But we are discussing what should be on this list and what should not.
I leave this conversation, peacefully.

This is not how I work or you work. It is about how a wiki should work. I quoted my experience to provide a context for my mail. Aren't there 100s of projects / elections running in En Wiki? Does everyone use mailing lists?
I could have easily called up any of my friends and they would have agreed. But someone might be interested as well and would feel bad later on not even being asked whether he/she wants to apply.
I am sorry that you didn't get the point yet. Where is the point of feeling bad when you can do it on-wiki transparently and everyone can see it? Nomination is a needless procedure but still it is ok if you wanted to follow a procedure.

May be if I start sending mails about everyday activities in Tamil Wikipedia, then you will understand the issue. There are many Tamils here who are not in Tamil Wikipedia. So, may be we too will have a good chance to find good volunteers :)
But we are discussing what should be on this list and what should not.
Is discussing that beyond the scope of this list :)
