Dear admins of WikimediaIndia-l and others connected to it,
I only noticed recently that the list description for WikimediaIndia-l reads "Discussion list on Indian language projects of Wikimedia." Personally, I find that a bit limiting - given that it (seems) to exclude English - which is of course an official Indian language, though not everyone knows that.
I'd appreciate it if you considered changing the title appropriately, to perhaps "Discussion list on Wikimedia projects in and about India" or something to the effect. Others might have thoughts on this too (or better title suggestions)?
Thanks, Achal
Hoi, There are several mailing lists that are about the English Wikipedia. The problem with including discussing particular English subjects on the Indian mailing list will not help in coming to a consensus in the English language community. My expectation is that when English becomes a major topic, it will drown out much of the language issues that are specific to India and the organisational issues that are specific to India.
It is the same as with a developers list for India. It is the perfect way of ghettoising yourself and effectively become more frustrated and helpless. Thanks, GerardM

I kind of agree with Achal on this one, the description should be changed to be as inclusive as possible. It's topics related to India, Indic languages might be considered a subset of the overall plan but it's not the only focus of this list, or am I wrong in assuming that?
It seems ironic to exclude English since almost all the discussion on this list has been in English.

Theo, Achal and others,
This mailing list was initiated several years back, in 2005 when we had just gone with a name that suited best then. The idea was not to exclude English, but to focus mainly on Indian language projects.
Please suggest an alternative description so that the present one could be modified.
Just keep it as *Wikimedia India discussion list*.
The list discusses all wikimedia India related topics irrespective of the fact that whether the topic is related to English wiki projects (India specific topics) or Indian language wiki projects or some other topics related to wikimedia India.
:) There is no room for English vs Indian languages fight here. English is used as the common medium of language to communicate between different language communities. That itself shows the importance of English.

The question is not English Wikipedia or Indic language Wikipedias. This list is primarily for discussions related to *anything* related to Wikimedia projects in India, Indic language Wikipedias, chapter , Wikipedia related news in India , Wikimedians from & in India etc
Something on the lines of "*Discussion list on Wikimedia projects in and about India*" or " *Wikimedia India discussion list " *may be more generic and suitable, IMHO

IMHO, the mailing list name indicates the scope sufficiently. English is very much included in Indian languages. I would prefer short descriptions, some thing like "Wiki India"
Cheers Arjun
There's no issue there, Hari and Shiju. I apologize if my tone gave you the wrong impression.
I think we might be getting lost in the minutia of it with the description. I would be happy with any options listed above, ideally it shouldn't be about limiting any one aspect of the India project even languages. It should be as inclusive as possible, that would be my opinion.

Salmaan
