Dear colleagues,
After Siebrand had given me a demonstration of the fantastic new Translate extension, I realized we are now able to take a big step forward in making the Wikimedia Grants program more accessible to our colleagues around the world.
I therefore ask for your help in translating http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Index into as many languages as possible, to ensure those seeking funding can find useful information in their own language.
(Note: I have already posted this request on translators-l, but I know there are folks on this list from language communities not represented on translators-l, and I would like your help in spreading this request to the local lists and village pumps you're active in.)
I have tried to make that page as concise and as clear as possible, though there is a somewhat unavoidable level of detail required because people actually need all this information to submit grant proposals. Nevertheless, if, during translation, you encounter something that's unclear, contradictory, or just weird, please don't hesitate to call it out, on this thread, on the talk page, or privately to me.
Just go to the Grants program page above, and click the "Translate this page" link near the top.
Thanks in advance for your help! I appreciate it greatly.

Can people now submit grant proposals in their own language?

Can people now submit grant proposals in their own language?
I think they could, but the people who will eventually decide about the grant may not know the language. Although I see GAC members cover some languages. In my personal opinion, to help everyone in this matter maybe it is better to keep things in English. But the information pages on grants and its process should be translated to other languages so people from different languages can understand the procedure very well.

The answer is *yes*, people can submit grant proposals in their own language, because we don't want a language barrier to prevent us from supporting a community that could do valuable work. For practical reasons, the grant evaluation and discussion _would_ need to be in English, however, so if the applicants are not able to communicate effectively in English, the WMF will support the discussion with a two-way translator -- a contractor if a volunteer is not readily available.
As Tanvir says, if at all possible to use English (don't worry about minor mistakes!), it would be easier for all involved, as it is the closest thing to a global lingua franca, but again, it is _not_ a requirement.
