hi,
Would India be interested? How do we put forth our interest? I'll be happy to help.

Hello everyone,
As you may have heard, a little while ago some organizers of Wiki Loves Monuments 2011 came together in a rainy and cold Amsterdam to evaluate the 2011 edition, and kick off documentation for 2012. We would like to share some of the results of our meeting with you.
The first and most important information is: * There is going to be a Wiki Loves Monuments in 2012 -- and if there is interest, we are going global!
We would like to get a feeling of in how many countries there would be people potentially interested in organizing a Wiki Loves Monuments nationally; but firstly, let us start with the basics.
Wiki Loves Monuments is a photo contest organized in 2010 and 2011 in, respectively, the Netherlands and in Europe. The contest asks the general audience to upload pictures of monumental/historical sites and buildings during September. It has a federal structure and is organised separately in every participating country by the local people who know how things work in their area; best photos from all countries are nominated for an international contest.
In 2011 this contest was very successful, with more than 165.000 photos of monuments in 18 participating countries submitted in total. This was possible thanks to the hard work of hundreds of volunteers in those countries who helped organise Wiki Loves Monuments in one way or another. The winning pictures have been published on http://www.wikilovesmonuments.eu and on Wikimedia Commons: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2011_winners.
Besides the wonderful direct impact on the overall quality and coverage of heritage and culture topics, Wiki Loves Monuments is a fantastic opportunity to reach some of our important goals: we had a participation of over 4.000 new users who created the first ever community-driven contribution peak on Wikimedia Commons (http://stats.wikimedia.org/reportcard/#new_editors_per_month); we have also helped in establishing cooperation between Wikimedia groups & chapters and some of their local cultural institutions and organisations in several countries.
Would you be interested in organizing a Wiki Loves Monuments in 2012 in your country? Would you like to know more? Find all the details at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012. We have put together some information there for you -- and much more will follow soon.
We would also like you to join our public mailing list where everyone is welcome to ask any questions about the details on how to organise a Wiki Loves Monuments in your country. This is a place where many organizers of 2011 are already on and we will use that as our main channel for communications and information dispersion in 2012. Be bold and sign up for the list at https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikilovesmonuments.
So, please speak up if you're interested!
Best regards, Lodewijk, Maarten & Tomasz (on behalf of so many others)

I already took the liberty of registering personal support :) Count me in too. We are planning a photo walk in Ahmedabad this January. I guess India's participation will have to be coordinated city/state wise?

hi,
If the cities interested and languages interested express their interest, we could go ahead at a national level through the chapter or as a community. The choice is with the community. Hence the question.

Would you be interested in organizing a Wiki Loves Monuments in 2012 in your country? Would you like to know more? Find all the details at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012 .

We did a monument walk in Bhubaneswar, Odisha in Oct, more than 5 professional photographers joined and clicked, finally it was me who uploaded my own photos in Flikr and Commons. So such events need more Wikipedian-Photographers with some newbies.

Along with this, just throwing up an idea. Since, the timeline is not yet decided, can we simultaneously have a Wikimedia India page to document all the Wiki loves monuments in India that happen in 2012?

hi,
If the cities interested and languages interested express their interest, we could go ahead at a national level through the chapter or as a community. The choice is with the community. Hence the question.

Hello everyone,
As you may have heard, a little while ago some organizers of Wiki Loves Monuments 2011 came together in a rainy and cold Amsterdam to evaluate the 2011 edition, and kick off documentation for 2012. We would like to share some of the results of our meeting with you.
The first and most important information is:
- There is going to be a Wiki Loves Monuments in 2012 -- and if there
is interest, we are going global!
Prad, Noopur, I'm with you on this one. I think what we need to do is, create a category on the Commons, customise the Upload Wizard if needed, set up a committee to check for copyright violations, create a page on Meta, translate it into every language, get your cameras, phones ready, stock up on film rolls and Memory Cards, batteries, etc. See, it's that simple. Let's not wait for Chapter or Foundation, and start NOW!
Crackers, I forgot to say Point, Click and Upload. Sorry.

Noopur, I strongly suggest that you create a page on Meta instead. People who have an account on any Wikipedia or Wikimedia project can sign in without having to register for again. Mitra, sure Social Media is exactly what Bala, Logic and I use for spreading word on anything Wiki related.
Will do, can you? Just need to copy. I don't have a comp for a bit.

Noopur, sorry, I don't have a computer at all here. Hence the WikiBreak ... Others, whoever creates the page, a something like Wiki Loves Monuments (2012), India should do. If it is incorrect, don't worry, an admin would move and redirect.
May I suggest to then at least use Commons for that? That is where all the rest of the documentation is also located. I suggest to link it from here: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012 and create http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012_in_India.

Its a great idea to have a Wiki loves monuments. Support from SIGs was mentioned. Speaking as a member of Indic Wikipedians on English Wikipedia, you have our support.
I would only say that September being partly/mostly a rainy month, our events should be summer holiday poised when it would be convenent for people to students to participate.

Throwing a few ideas since our participation tendency seems positive:
1) Can we start doing a few things in the background: compile lists of monuments? ASI already has the list for monuments of national importance, State wise: http://asi.nic.in/asi_monu_alphalist.asp 2) Let's sign up/raise hands for people who can help figure out how-to guides, do documentation and collect resources/materials so that it's easy to implement this template event anywhere? 3) Just a suggestion: Can we have a GLAM India mailing list so that for now we can keep all GLAM related, Monuments discussions on that? Keeps it neater but this is just a suggestion.
As always, *me raises hand first*. I am looking around for more monument lists while you guys figure out the organization bit. :) Warmly Noopur

hi,
Since this is happening for the first time at the national level and the international level, perhaps it would be nice to not do it at the state level at all. Let all the photos come into a common pool and allow for voting that would lead to these becoming India's entries for Wiki Loves Monuments 2012. The above is how it happened in 2011 - with nations selecting their best pics and then forwarding it. I am assuming that is how it happens in 2012 at the international level as well.
Ideas are welcome on: 1. How to spread the word? The central Commons page is created - http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012_in_India... and word was spread through Facebook today. Word needs to be first spread for volunteers - later, for photographers to enter into the fray. 2. How do the volunteers organize themselves? 3. How do we simultaneously improve articles on the monuments, try to reach out to local language communities of the state and encourage Wikipedian contribution from there. Counterpoint: Do we need to do this simultaneously?
warm regards, Pradeep User:Prad2609

It would be great to have India participating! Maybe it would make sense to organize some IRC session about that? Perhaps that would be a good way to do some initial brain storming and question answering.
I suggest that if you create a wiki page about it, to do that on Commons - where the rest of the documentation is also located.
Oh, and by the way: we had 5000 participants in 2011 - 80% was not a Wikipedian. But the important part is that they were often not professional photographers, but also many "heritage lovers" - people who like history and/or buildings and also like to photograph. Most of those people never went to a local event, but uploaded what they had in their drawer already (or on Flickr etc) or just did it all by themselves - as long as they were motivated.
But maybe things work out totally different in India :)

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Tomasz Kozłowski odder.wiki@gmail.com Date: 2011/12/18 Subject: [Foundation-l] Wiki Loves Monuments 2012 -- global? To: Wikimedia Foundation Mailing List < foundation-l@lists.wikimedia.org>
The winning pictures have been published on http://www.wikilovesmonuments.eu and on Wikimedia Commons: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2011_winners .
Find all the details at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012 .
