Hi,
I'm user:AshLin, co-chair of the Working Group for a forthcoming Wiki-conference in India in November 2011. I'm writing formally to you to request for a list for that event; a request which you may have already received informally from Shiju Alex.
The event will definitely be taking place on 18-20 November 2011 at Mumbai and we have already requested Jimbo's presence at the event (as an example of the event's firming up).
This is a joint venture between the Indian Chapter and the Indian Wikimedia community and will henceforth be an annual feature. We were about to start communications of the Working Group on a Google Group but community members have asked if our email group can be hosted by the Foundation and be a mailman list. If provided, it is planned to use this list for planning and organising all national wikiconferences in India henceforth.
The advantages, we feel, are that the list and its archives will be preserved and secure while the Foundation exists, ease of use & interface as all of us are used to mailman lists for community communication to date and that the future of the group will not be dependent upon Google policies.
We request that the list be named "WikiConference India", to distinguish it from other types of WikiConferences such as the Wikimania series.
Should other countries decide to have annual national conferences, perhaps their lists could be named "WikiConference xxxx" (where xxxx is name of the country) similarly.
Looking forward to a positive and early response so that we can begin our organising activities.
Warm regards,
Ashwin Baindur ------------------------------------------------------
I believe you need to file a bug for this Ashwin. If you want, I can file it for you and get someone to close the request.
Are you sure about the title? I would suggest something like WikiIndia-events or Wikimediaindia-events list. So that it doesn't become useless after the event and can be re-used for coordinating future events. The naming convention for the list also depends on country codes and previous naming convention, Wikimediaindia-events would be a sub-list of Wikimediaindia-l.

Hi Salmaan,
Thanks for the offer! Shiju is just waiting for a reply from Casey Browne before we file the bug. Since we have formally asked, it would be appropriate to wait for a while for the response.
As regards the name, there are now a large amount of activities, lists etc communities, meet-ups etc coming up in India. We now need a finer level of grading between Foundation, chapter and community driven ventures - hence we are a little chary of appending "media" unless it is directly driven by or associated with Chapter or Foundation. Secondly, events are of many types, whereas we want a list specifically for the annual national conference and perhaps other conferences in India, hence the need felt for the word "conference".
Warm regards,

Ashwin, How about when the conference get arranged next year. You cannot still use the same list name, as that would not help in distinctiveness. May be we should think about adding the year as well (in full eg:2011 instead of 11). Abhi

So are we going to use the same list name for every year?
That would lead to a bit of confusion isn't, when the same list name is used year after year. Different list for each year would also make it easy in archiving isn't?

Ashwin, How about when the conference get arranged next year. You cannot still use the same list name, as that would not help in distinctiveness. May be we should think about adding the year as well (in full eg:2011 instead of 11). Abhi

Hi Salmaan,
Thanks for the offer!

The subject headers added in every mail by mailman can be changed as per need to reflect the relevant year/conference name. Creating a new list everytime will be a pain.

Hi,
I'm user:AshLin, co-chair of the Working Group for a forthcoming Wiki-conference in India in November 2011. I'm writing formally to you to request for a list for that event; a request which you may have already received informally from Shiju Alex.
Has the feasibility of hosting the list by Wikimedia.in domain been
discussed.? As the event relates to India, I feel it may be better to host it as part of wikimedia.in.
Thanks Arjun

Sorry, I had a backlog of emails and I realized that a good amount of
discussion including considering the option of wikimedia.in happened on this topic in the organising committee.
Glad to see rapid progress being made by organising committee.
Thanks Arjun
We were told that only a Google group was possible but since we could get that from the web itself and since Google can change its policies, the consensus was to go for a mailman list on Wikimedia server due to its permanency.
However, if mailman program can be put in place on the Wikimedia.in server and space promised permanently for the archives, that would be great. As of now the Wikimedia people noted that a lot of list requests come from India. In future they may be chary to give more lists especially to our smaller communities and language groups, especially at the rate we are growing.

That's not necessarily a bad thing though, since activity in India has really been growing lately. You guys actually use the lists -- I'm on a lot of them and I know how much activity they get ;-) -- so there's not a huge problem with creating Wikimedia mailing lists for you guys. I just thought it was funny that a large proportion of requests come from India. :-)
Don't feel like you guys are unwanted or are asking for too much!
That's good to know - thought it might be a case of asking for too large a share of limited resources.

Arjuna - one reason discussed was that meta seemed to be the default place for hosting planning etc. for events both local and global. Hence. I think we can link to the framework from the wiki.wikimedia.in site?
Thank you.
