In the spirit of openness and free-knowledge, is it
possible
(1) To ensure that such apps are available on all platforms, whether large
or small. The latter is especially important to ensure diversity and that
smaller players are not pushed out of the market.
As you very rightly said, it is in our collective benefit to be able to
support different platforms and widen the reach for openness and
free-knowledge. There are ongoing initiatives within the Wikimedia
Foundation’s product teams that do cover the most popular platforms, as
well as support wider access to Wikimedia sites via mobile web browser.
Which platforms do you think we should also be considering for extending
additional coverage?
(2) To make it possible to work with Free and Open Source community
volunteers who might be able and willing to make such
apps more widely
available, by releasing specifications to them?
Specifically for the KaiOS operating system, there is a developer platform
that shares guidelines on how to develop apps[1]. To particularly
contribute to this app, we do have detailed specifications and open tasks
on the public issue-tracker[2] and git repository[3], which should be
accessible to volunteer contributors. The developers on the team can
provide guidance and reviews as needed, as they are currently the upstream
maintainers of this app.

(3) To seek feedback from the community about the kinds of apps that might
make it easier to create, generate and share Wikipedia content? For
instance, we badly need a less-complicated, low-bandwidth focussed Commons
upload app that could help us tap the power of photography for Wikimedia
Commons in our region.
The Commons app has definitely come up several times over the years in
wider conversations. There are ongoing on and off-wiki discussions that we
regularly obtain feedback from, as well as periodic activities like the
Community Wishlist Survey, and other research or usability studies. You can
also drop feedback for our team particularly through the team talk page[4]
or issue-tracker[5].

Hi everyone,
There is now an additional way to browse Wikipedia in India! We are happy
to confirm that the Wikipedia app is available on the top 3 mobile phone
operating system platforms in India - Android, iOS and newly KaiOS, which
is provided through Jiophones [1]. Jiophone users can download and install
the Wikipedia app on the JioStore.
This first release is focused on how to make it easier to read Wikipedia
on a phone that does not have a touch screen. The platform supports over
100 languages for reading, and we appreciate that volunteers have fully
translated the Wikipedia app user interface into five Indian languages so
far: Bangla, Gujarati, Hindi, Odia, and Punjabi. The app will continue to
have updates and reach more countries over time.
If you (or someone you know) own a Jiophone, please give the app a try by
downloading it from the JioStore. We would like to hear about your
experience with it. Let us know about issues or bugs through the in-app
feedback feature, through the project talk page [2], or through Phabricator
[3].
To enable the app to reach readers in even more Indian languages, we
would greatly appreciate additional translations of the user interface on
Translatewiki.net [4].
To know more about the app and our work, and why we believe this project
is so important to help us reach new users, you can see the main page for
the app [5] and the Questions and Answers page [6]. We welcome your
comments, suggestions, and feedback on the related talk page [2].
Lastly, please, do share this message on other venues of interest for
community members in India.
Kind regards,
