WMF is introducing Beta Features https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/About_Beta_Features (1), a new program that lets you test new features on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia sites before they are released for everyone.
Think of it as a digital laboratory where community members can preview upcoming software and give feedback to help improve them. This special preference page lets designers and engineers experiment with new features on a broad scale, but not in a disruptive manner.
Beta Features is released on all wikis worldwide on November 7, 2013. You can test it now on MediaWiki.org http://MediaWiki.org/ and on TestWiki.
Here are the first features you can test this week: * Media Viewer https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Multimedia/About_Media_Viewer -- view images in large size or full screen. (2)
* VisualEditor Formulæ https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/VisualEditor/Beta_Features/Formulae -- edit algebra or equations on your pages. (3) This feature is yet to work for Indic. You may test on English Wiki
* Typography Refresh https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Typography_Update -- make text more readable and consistent. (4)
Would you like to try out BetaFeatures now? After you log in here on MediaWiki.org https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatu res (5), a small 'Beta' link will appear next to your 'Preferences': click on it to see features you can test, check the ones you want, then click 'Save'. Learn more here https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/About_Beta_Features (1)
After you've tested Beta Features, please let developers know what you think on https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk:About_Beta_Features this discussion page (6) -- or report any bugs here on Bugzilla https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=MediaWiki%20extensions &component=BetaFeatures (7).
Beta Features was developed by the Wikimedia Foundation's Design, Multimedia and VisualEditor teams. Along with other developers, they will be adding new features to this experimental program every few weeks.
Enjoy, and don't forget to let us know what you think!

Thanks Pavanaja, just a link would have sufficed, https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatu...
I don't think such updates need to be shared at all these mailing lists. Folks at Meta, and wikimedia.org might be knowing this already.

+1 Ansuman.
Also sharing such emails with regional language lists don't serve the purpose as they wish to receive as less as possible emails in non-native languages.

I beg to differ. Pavanaja doesn't spam the list. Some new features are being publicised. A well-crafted email has been placed. In many cases, Indic Wikipedians are unaware of what's happening. This is an India list & the topic is completely relevant.

I too believe that it very much relevant . For some one who wants to know every new happening in Wikipedia , that mail was not redundant .The mailing list consists of both new comers and experienced users . under such situation , the mail was not only relevant but also informative . -Sibi On Nov 12, 2013 7:24 AM, "Ashwin Baindur" ashwin.baindur@gmail.com wrote:

And, along side such notifications, http://en.planet.wikimedia.org/ provides a way to keep updated about the posts from various teams and, initiatives.
Yes it's definitely relevant, but few of us missing the point.
There are better and easier ways of getting such updates:
1. Blog posts (also available via Twitter/Wikimediablog): https://blog.wikimedia.org/c/technology/ https://blog.wikimedia.org/2013/11/07/introducing-beta-features/
2. Wikimedia-l: http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikimedia-l/2013-November/128719.html
3. Multimedia: https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/multimedia This mailing list particularly started for such multimedia updates, see: http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/multimedia/2013-November/subject.html Enjoy!
4. It may get highlighted at Wikimedia Highlights (monthly): https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Highlights; Users can subscribe to receive at their desired user page(s) here, https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Global_message_delivery/Targets/Wikimedia_Hi... This also published at wikimediaannounce-l
Such updates enabled at particular sites also get published there, in this case at Meta, MediaWiki and Commons, e.g. here at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meta:Babel#Introducing_Beta_Features_and_Med....
So I'm not sure, how many depends on this mailing list, folks who want such technical updates can easily avail these above means. However such updates related to India would be fine to get re-posted here.
Finally let me mention something important: I don't know from where the post was copied, but it's sad and disappointing that an A2K employee doesn't know about attribution.
Thanks, Ansuman

I found it useful. It's not like they post *all* updates here.

Okay.
Thank you.
Best,
Gautam ________ http://www.akshara.org.in/
In my opinion, it is very important for any community to keep itself updated with the technical advancements that could help the community. BetaFeatures is an amazing tool. I had attended it's IRC introductory meeting and even the senior members of several communities agree that this would be a very economical way of testing new features. I also think that the Indian Wikimedia community should not be an absolutely Indian list, it needs some interaction with the global community as well. Only developers are mostly subscribed to technical mailing list and very important advancements are posted to regional lists. It would be really much better if we applaud the effort put by Pavanaja, instead of accusing him of spamming which he did not commit. I don't think condemning every action, even the ones done in *good faith *need to be criticised so much that people stop acting altogether. No developer wants to volunteer for a community that doesn't value his time and appreciate the effort they put.
Thank You, Aarti
