Friends.
Tamil Wikipedia announced a Media Contest to increase the commons media files like photos, audio and video in the wikipedia world. see the announcement here. http://ta.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contest/en
To upload the photos there are two ways available so far.
1. The web based upload wizard http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:UploadWizard
2. Java based upload tool - Commonist http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Tools/Commonist
We have to provide a detailed filename and description to the images for uploading.
When we have a bunch of photos to upload, we have to select them, crop, or edit them before uploading.
Found that that "GThumb Image Viewer" can show the files, edit the files and add IPTC tags to the images.
We can view, edit, delete, rotate, crop and add the required Description and Title to the images for uploading to wikimedia commons.
How to upload the files? There are two tools already. But, I wanted to plugin to any image viewer to upload to wikimedia commons directly. No image viewer has that plugin.
DigiKam has it, but due to some issues, the mediawiki plugin is not released.
So, I started to write my own script for uploading all the files in a folder to upload to mediawiki.
Here is it. http://code.google.com/p/mediawiki-uploader/
Usage details are available in INSTALL and README files.
Thanks for the wikipedia users Surya and Sodabottle for their valuable suggestions.
Please report if there are any issues.
Provide your suggestions for improving too.
Thanks.

I've translated interface messages which are NECESSARY for the contest.
But, these messages are not useful for now. :)
But, I'll do this ASAP. :)
Thanks Geard for notice it. :)
Actually Shrinivasan didn't mentioned the contest upload wizard. It is here. ( http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:UploadWizard&camp... )

Hello Shrini,
We never imagined someone developing tool/script for participating in the contest. Good work #WIN :)
Hey Shrinivasan, this is brilliant. Bala had mentioned last week at our Coimbatore meetup that this fellow from ILUGC had uploaded 10 high definition shots before being dissatisfied with the upload tool and then went off to code his own. Congrats on your heroic efforts. Now, I can use this to tell photography friends who haven't contributed to the contest yet and say It's easier and that they have no excuse to not upload. Brilliant! Kudos on your amazing work.

Sumana has forwarded this email to the cultural/GLAM list as well where there was need felt on batch uploads and people there might also benefit from what you've coded.
Thank you.

This is really fantastic, and makes me very very happy. This represents the best of what makes the Wikimedia projects great - someone identifies a need and then rolls up their sleeves and fills that need. Well done, Shrini, and thank you.

Thanks a lot for your innovation to ease upload of images to commons. Thanks also for making it open source, as it can be inspiration for others to improve it and/or build other tools, which can simiplify working with wiki projects.
Based on my previous experience with commons, the category addition is a pain point, even with current default tools on commons. Categories are not added as part of Upload. After few days, a bot will flag all those images with the uncategorised warning. Can you explore enhancing the tool to support categorisation along with Upload?
I will try your tool in couple of weeks and provide more feedback.
Cheers Arjuna Rao Chavala
hi arjuna,
thanks for the wishes.
I am also very new to wikipedia. please give some more details on categories.
shall we give any text as category or some pre defined text are there to pick up from?
use gthumb to add some meta data. we can parse it and use them as categories.
please share your ideas.

Please see Wiki Conference India as a sample category http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:WikiConference_India_2011
The listing sees around 537 out of which I came to know around 300 or so were contributed by User:RameshNG. I am sure the contributor would have spent a lot of time adding categories to all such images.

is there any image viewer in windows where we can add comments and notes to images?
the meta data we add is called IPTC tags.
if so we can use this application in windows too.
please find it and share here.
thanks.
Hi Shrinivasan,
I just used this tool and found the upload process much easier.
Initially, I tried uploading multiple images in the web and abandoned it.
I am sure that this will motivate me to upload more images.
Thanks a ton.
