I have also worked on a similar project for MediaWiki this summer & developed an extension http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:SignupAPI My work involved a lot of jQuery & Ajax stuff, so in case you need any help with that, feel free to contact me directly.

MediaWiki (the software that powers Wikipedia) already has a jQuery library & also the necessary CSS markups to support the specific functionalities for vector theme, you can try downloading a copy of MediaWiki on your local host & play with it, you may also come up with a modified version of the article page which you can showcase in your talk
