Hi,
An idea / proposal for the next Wiki meetups:
There has been lot of talk. So would like to see some action :)
Can we decide a Sunday in next month and call for meetups in all cities at the same time? This time can be a bit extended the usual duration. Say, 4-6 hours?
During this time, all of us can sit down and do edits in Indian language Wikis, Indian topics in English Wiki? This way we can engage the onlookers and convert them to real Wikians. We can also ask people world over to edit Wiki at the same time. We can see what we have achieved at the end of the day !
Hope this will be fun and can be done every 3 months.
Regards,
Ravi
Nice idea.. I was thinking the same for some time .. I was planning to call it " Shut up & Edit" :)
Bangalore meetups happens second sunday of every month. So the next one will be November 14.
How about a theme like " 2010 Commonwealth games" ? We will create articles for all Indian medal winners in english and indic languages ( which ever is missing).
Regards Tinu Cherian

A gem of an idea. I like Tinu's suggestion of creating articles for the CWG medal winners. I remember doing something similar (individually, of course) for the 2006 CWG.
Maybe Ravi or Tinu (someone more active than me, at least) could create a project page for this initiative. That would really get it off the ground.

I like the idea as well as Tinu's naming of that. :) While creating articles for CWG medal winners is important for sure, I would like this marathon to be a little free form, leaving it to "wikipedian opportunism" to pick edits to make.

Nice idea Ravi, Tinu.
I would suggest lets not stick to a theme. Let people choose tasks for themselves. For people who dont have specific tasks(read newcomers), we could offer some from list of tasks. I say this because not everyone have same level of ease with task like article creation / particular subject(which i think led to decline of Collab Of Month in en.wiki) .Some of you guys are too good at article creation, some like me are not so good at it. I certainly have a block of writing anything more than a 2 line stub or take days to complete an writing an article. There can are tasks like
* Creating / improving pages of your interest / locality / native / *what ever* * Adding references to unreferenced BLP * Collaborating in person with other editors towards FA/GA [i accept its more than 6 hours, but its unique oppurtunity having people together at same time] * Arm chair flickr hunt to add media to commons * Translation * De-orphaning pages with links * Creating templates / navboxes * Running AWB tasks like fixing redlinks/typos * Categorization cleanups * Even "writing a bot" / code something like(for) Arjuna's gyanpad etc. * Creating newsletter / video tutorials, etc * <INSERT YOUR IDEA OF CONTRIBUTION>
We could add more on a task page. The motto should be "creating / doing" something for wikipedia (however small it could be) instead of talking / listening. Of course if there are bunch of you who share a common interest (like CWG), they can always collaborate
We could have a page on meta on the day of the meet and have everyone update a page "What they are upto" and how they are going about it, and if they could get help from fellow wikipedians.
I would prefer to call it Wiki Marathon / WikiParty [like openstreetmap mapping parties].
Tinu, IMHO "Shut up and Edit" doesnt sound inclusive and might offend some speakers. We need them!,love all :) . I guess it might have come from "shut up and hack". Not sure if you know bunch of people flamed against it (ex:- here http://lawgon.livejournal.com/74396.html just read the last para first line. "nuff said")

Tinu,
As others have opined let this be free to do any Wiki activity following the Wiki way. This will also help new comers who may be afraid / hesitant to edit. They can even do simple tasks like fixing typos.
Let us a get a Meta page created and post banners in all Indic Wikis.

How will we quantify the efforts on the same day without a theme ? Blind editing on anything can be "done on any day". If we can stick to a theme ( any) , we can see the results by the end of the day.
Commenwealth was just a suggestion of theme and can be replaced by any other. Let people interested in creating new articles , create them on various language wikis. The articles may not neccassarily be full done, stubs are more than enough to start. Let people interested, help in categorization related to those articles. Let people interested in transaltion, help that way. Let those interested in photographs, go hunt images on flickr with proper licenses, for those articles. etc etc..
Just my thoughts, that's all ... If most people feel this is too restrictive, then we can have free editing too :)
"Shut up and Edit" was indeed inspired by "shut up and hack". :) I didnt know that many people didnt like that phrase then. In that case, let it be better called as Wiki Marathon / WikiParty.

The participants can all sign up on a project page. We then can use Mediawiki's show contributions and show the aggreagate to see the net effect. We may need to do a creative visualisation of the contribs somehow.

May be "WIKI-thon" or "wiki-mashup" or "wiki-sprint" (typical FOSS community event styles) could be a more acceptable name. The idea is really good but we need to do some basework.
Can we do some trial sessions across various cities first. Lets have common subject/s for adding wiki content in various languages.
After these trials in the next 2 months, we can possibly have a Wiki-thon on 26th January. That could be a good media event where all such teams might be connected on audio-video using skype/gtalk etc. Will be a great interactive session. Being a holiday and if enough publicity is given to the event, this could become a great starter for wiki awareness and adding new contributors.
Comments, suggestion welcome.

From a branding perspective, using "thon" would probably work well and add some consistency to other Wikimedia event. For many years there have been all-day coding events that are called "hackathons" but a couple years back we decided to try "codeathon" (because some people out there still thinking that "hacking" means you are doing something malicious). Therefore something like Wiki-thon, edit-thon, etc., could work well and is a term that could be picked up by other Wikimedia groups worldwide when they host or inspire similar events/initiatives.

1. Any name is fine.
2. Should we bring media for everything ? :) We can have a first shot next month and arrange such events on special occasions if we would like to bring media in.
3. If we force a theme, I myself will lose interest in participating. The basic idea is to give a a taste of wiki to new comers and bring back inactive editors and see what is the maximum potential of a community in a day.
4. Edit count, number of new articles created should be a good enough metric. Frankly, I don't bother how we measure as long as we contribute something good. We can measure the activity across one whole day in UTC so contributions from people in all time zones will count.

1. Agree.."Wiki-thon" is nice 2. Tired of seeing media in every meetup in Bangalore :( (Ok..Ok.. don't blame me :P ) 3. No theme for now :) 4. No problems

We have started a project page in Tamil Wikipedia for the proposed Wikithon (guess we have consensus on this name ) and people are already signing up.
If all interested Indic language Wiki communities can discuss this in their village pumps, then we can coordinate the info in Wikimedia.in

Hi,
20+ users have already signed up for the Wiki Marathon during the November 14, 2010 week end. Expecting more users when we pep up the campaign. Some of us will participate in this from the Chennai Wiki meetup in planning.
How about the progress in other Wikis, cities ?
