Hey everyone,
Wanted to provide an update on the upcoming Wikimedia Foundation’s New
Readers research in India.
We have taken feedback from a few folks, and enjoyed a good chat with
Yohann Thomas on priority research needs.
Reflecting these, we will be in India from June 13 to 27. The research will
focus on:
-
Urban, semi-urban, and rural internet users
-
in Hindi, Tamil, and English languages
-
From education, technology, and rural industry backgrounds
-
Around the Delhi (including nearby Noida and Gurgaon) and Chennai areas
We're really looking forward to visiting India and learning more about the
many different kinds of internet users there, and of course, to potentially
meeting some of you during our travels! If you are in or around Delhi /
Chennai, please email me so we can connect.
Warmly,
Joe Sutherland

I am pleased to announce the launch of the third Inspire Campaign for
IdeaLab, focused on addressing harassment of Wikimedia project contributors:
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IdeaLab/Inspire>
Harassment diminishes the experience of contributing and participation for
a substantial number of individuals, even those who simply witness it.
Current methods of dealing with harassment are considered unacceptable as
they often do not lead to productive outcomes.[1]
During the month-long campaign, you are invited to submit & review ideas on
how to better address harassment. Consider joining a team to help make an
idea happen. Ideas can be submitted in any language, and focus on
research, building tools or software, outreach efforts, or something
completely new. Grants are available from the Wikimedia Foundation to fund
projects that are eligible for financial support.[2] Ideas focused on
changes to community policies and guidelines are also welcome. Google
Hangout sessions are also scheduled in June if you’d like to discuss your
idea or have questions about WMF grants.[3]
Questions about the campaign can be directed at the Inspire talk page.[4]
An FAQ page about the campaign is also available.[5]
If you want to help make your projects safer for everyone to participate
in, I encourage you to participate in this Inspire Campaign. I believe we
can work together to address this difficult and important issue.
With thanks,
Chris "Jethro" Schilling

Greetings from CIS-A2K,
It gives us great pleasure to inform that the Train-the-Trainer 2016
programme
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/CIS-A2K/Events/Train_the_Trainer_Program/20…>
organised by CIS-A2K is going to be held from 17-19 June, Bangalore.
Train-the-Trainer programme was conceptualised in order to bridge the gap
between wiki volunteers/enthusiasts who would like to conduct off reach
activities and have been discouraged due to non availability of resources
and support. The three day residential event will include presentations by
the participants regarding a plan to improve their wiki-projects, expert
sessions about conducting effective outreach activities, best practices
from the global wiki communities, revised grant structure of WMF,
activities to understand WMF strategy and vision, understanding global
metrics and coming up with a concrete plan by participants in association
with A2K to improve their wiki-projects.
A2K invites Wikimedians to apply for this programme. Participants will be
selected based on their on wiki and off wiki activities and their responses
to the questions asked in the Google form:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1AmbA609Foy5gNLRw1SgK4r0YF8yFwcLLhNdvvrpC1z…
Selected participants are required to finish pre-work assigned to them
without fail. Please fill the Google form given below and write to us at
tanveer(a)cis-india.org, tito(a)cis-india.org and rahim(a)cis-india.org for more
details.

Dear all,
*Wiki Loves Earth* (*WLE*) is an annual international photographic
competition held during the month of May, organised worldwide by theWikipedia
community members <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedians> with the help
of local Wikimedia affiliates across the globe. Participants take pictures
of local natural heritage and scenic landscape in their countries, and
upload them on Wikimedia Commons
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Commons>. The aim of the event is
to highlight the conservation areas
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conservation_area> of the participating
countries with the goal to encourage people to capture pictures of these
sights, and to put them under a free license which can then be re-used not
only in Wikipedia but everywhere by everyone across different domains.
India participated in such a photography contest for the first time in
2014. The winners could be found here
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Earth_2014/Winners#In…>.
This
year WMIN is participating again and we need your support.
Do you have pictures of protected areas of India
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protected_areas_of_India>, or from your
recent trip to any national park
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_national_parks_of_India> on your
computer? This is a great opportunity to give them a second life in this
Wiki Loves Earth contest. In addition to being seen by everyone, your
pictures could be included in Wikipedia and contribute to the
knowledge of India’s
natural beauty <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protected_area>. Freely
licensed photos collected through Wikipedia Loves Earth may also be reused
elsewhere than in Wikipedia.
You can upload photos that may have been taken by you at any time. The key
criteria to be eligible for the contest are that they are to be uploaded to
Wikimedia Commons during June 2016.
You can sign up as a volunteer and participate in discussion over here
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Loves_Earth_2016_in_India>.
Thanks,
Sanket

Subject: [cultural-partners] a new statistics tool
To: Wikimedia Chapters cultural partners coordination - closed list <
cultural-partners(a)wikimedia.ch>
There is a new tool available for generating pageview statistics for sets
of pages:
http://tools.wmflabs.org/massviews/?project=en.wikipedia.org
You can either analyze an entire category or give it a PagePile ID (See
https://tools.wmflabs.org/pagepile/). (This is just for getting page view
statistics, not media view statistics.)
If you have any suggestions or feedback, you can either email me or add
them at https://github.com/MusikAnimal/pageviews/issues.

Hello Wikimedians,
We are excited to announce the launch of a new Wikimedia Foundation grants

Rapid grants fund Wikimedia community members -- individuals, groups, or
organizations contributing to Wikimedia projects -- to organize projects
throughout the year for up to USD 2,000. Projects can include experiments
or standard needs that don't need broad review to get started. Applications
are reviewed weekly by WMF staff.
Read more about the new program and apply here:
