Heya, this is inform you that Rohini Lakshane has been appointed as
the chair of the Gender-gap SIG. This was the first nomination for an
SIG chair where there were other candidates, in this case Pavithra H.
Rohini was nominated and seconded by Krutikaa Jawanjal and Netha
Hussain, and got 20 votes in her favour, the highest in any Wikimedia
India voting process, beating Karthik's record of 19 votes in

Here is the A2K newsletter for the month of February,
2013.
Wikimedia Foundation, beginning from September 1, 2012, awarded
the Centre for Internet & Society (CIS) a two-year grant of INR
26,000,000 to support and develop free knowledge in India. Consequently,
Wikimedia Foundation's India Program became the Access to Knowledge
(A2K) program [1] of CIS. In the second issue of our newsletter for
2013, we are glad to introduce you to our new programme officer, Dr.
U.B. Pavanaja [2]. The A2K team [3] consists of four members based in
Delhi: T. Vishnu Vardhan [4], Nitika Tandon [5], Subhashish Panigrahi
[6] and Noopur Raval [7], and one new team member Dr. U.B. Pavanaja [8]
who works from Bangalore office. Archives of our newsletters are here

Member
* Dr. U.B. Pavanaja [11] joined the A2K team as Programme
Officer, India Language Initiatives on March 4, 2013. Dr. Pavanaja holds
a Master's degree from Mysore University and Ph.D. from Mumbai
University. He was a scientist at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai,
for about 15 years. He is one of the oldest editors of Kannada
Wikipedia. He has to his credit many firsts, viz., first Kannada
website, first Kannada online magazine, first Indian language (Kannada)
website to receive Golden Web Award, first Indian language (Kannada)
editor for Palm OS, first Indian language (Kannada) editor for WinCE
device (HP Jornado 720), first Indian language version (Kannada) of
universally popular Logo (programming language for children) software,
etc. His Kannada logo won the Manthan Award for the year 2006. He was a
member of the technical advisory committee setup by the Govt. of
Karnataka for Standardization of Kannada on Computers (2000). He is also
a member of the Kannada Software Committee of Govt. of Karnataka
(2008-current).

Pavanaja to the entire Wikimedia community! Dr. Pavanaja has joined the
Access to Knowledge team at CIS as a consultant from March 4 onward.
Those associated with Indian language computing and especially that in
Kannada may know him already for having started the first Kannada
website: Vishvakannada.com, the first Kannada online magazine, the first
Indian language (Kannada) website to receive Golden Web Award, the first
Indian language (Kannada) editor for Palm OS and many more firsts.
Dr.
Pavanaja holds a Master's degree from Mysore University and Ph.D. from
Mumbai University. He was a scientist at the Bhabha Atomic Research
Centre, Mumbai, for about 15 years and has done advanced research in
Taiwan. He resigned from BARC in 1997 and dedicated himself fully for
the cause of Computer and Indian languages. You could read more about
his contributions here [1]. Prior to this he has also worked at
Microsoft Research Labs and has been a long time contributor to Kannada
Wikipedia.
We are very fortunate to have him on board. You can reach

Hi all,
Chennai is having a wiki meetup after a gap of nearly one and half years on
March 9, 2013 (Saturday). There will be a couple of short presentations on
state of the Tamil wiki projects and an introduction of the Wikimedia India
Chapter. All are welcome. If there are English or any other language
wikimedians, who want to introduce / talk about their Wiki projects they
are welcome to do so. (please send me a mail, so that I can plan the agenda
accordingly). We will be sharing the venue and time slot with Indian Linux
Users Group - Chennai (ILUGC) who are graciously helping us. People
