Dear All,
Am very Glad and Honoured to tell you about the First of its kind,
Wiki-Women Conference to be held in India. We have been talking about the
huge gender imbalance among Wikipedia contributors (not unlike science,
technology, engineering, and mathematics fields). However the gender skew
seems particularly prominent here.
With the Aim of attracting and sustaining larger Women population, a
Conference for Women would be a Great place without any influence that
would undermine the confidence(just a possibility) in any way from Male
contributors. With this agenda in mind The National Wiki-Women Conference
would be a two day Event (a weekend) in Pune. It has been a place of lot of
historic reforms particularly in the field of Education with the initiation
of Women-Education movement and establishment of the first Women's school in
India. And this seems to be a Good place for the first Women's Conference
considering some other practicalities as well.
As per, User:Netha Hussain has created a Meta-page for the conference
Here<http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Netha_Hussain/WikiWomenConf_India>
. Dates for the conference have been proposed as 12th-13th Jan 2013
tentatively on the eve of Wikipedia Birthday on 15th Jan. Followed by an
after-party till 15th which will be open for males. This will bring in
Wikipedians from different areas under one roof and make it a memorable
celebration ! The page will be developed as the programme shapes further
here-on.
Would be Great to carry the discussion further with your inputs about the
first Wiki-Women Conference in India. Look forward with sincere hope to
make this happen and increase Indian women contributors and that Wikipedia
benefits from a wider and more divers community of contributors.

Hi all,
just to let you know what we are spotting in central banners currently!
The Wikimedia movement raises a significant amount of money in its annual
fundraiser. They are now changing how non-core money is allocated across
movement entities, and you may be part of a new Funds Dissemination
Committee (FDC), evaluating funding requests and making allocation
recommendations (of a total of over 10 million dollars) to the Wikimedia
Foundation's Board of Trustees!

Subject: Leaving the Wikimedia Foundation
To: Announce Mailing List <WikimediaAnnounce-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Dear Wikimedia friends and colleagues,
It is bittersweet for me to share with all of you that I will be leaving
the Wikimedia Foundation at the end of August to relocate to Australia for
personal reasons.
It is difficult for me to leave Wikimedia and particularly leave the Global
Development team, which I’ve had the pleasure of building and leading over
the past two years. I am proud of what we have accomplished in raising the
priority of much of the globe within the Wikimedia movement, strengthening
our mobile strategy and education program, globalizing communications, and
tackling the difficult movement roles issues that I hope can be put in the
past. It hasn’t been easy or uncontroversial, but I truly believe that we
are heading in the right direction.
One of the great joys of my work has been the opportunity to travel and
meet many amazing Wikipedians and to share the Wikimedia story with the
world. It is so inspiring to hear first hand how much people love our
projects and the amazing things that so many people do in support of the
movement. This is what helped me survive the many long flights and
jetlag-filled nights. It was an honour representing the Wikimedia
Foundation and often the Wikimedia movement in so many places.
I am confident that the Global Development work will thrive with the team
in place and with all of the dedicated community members who see us as
partners. I look forward to becoming a volunteer member of the movement and
supporting the work in new ways. Sue will share plans for the transition
shortly.
Many thanks to all who have supported me and our work.
Kind regards,
Barry

Subject: Follow-up to Barry's note
To: Wikimedia Announce Mailing List <WikimediaAnnounce-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hi folks,
I want to thank Barry for everything he’s done for the Wikimedia
movement, and express my regret that he’s leaving the Foundation.
Barry’s done a lot for the movement. He's been involved for three
years: first, as the Bridgespan lead for our strategy project, and
afterwards as Chief Global Development Officer for the Foundation. He
was a major contributor to the five-year strategic plan, and as CGDO
he’s set up and launched a number of key projects that arose as a
direct result of that plan, including the catalyst initiatives and
Wikipedia Zero. He’s also done some tough and useful work helping
Wikimedia grapple with issues related to movement roles and funds
dissemination -- the fact that we're now in a position to launch the
Funds Dissemination Committee is very much a credit to Barry. I want
to thank him for everything he’s accomplished for the movement, and
wish him all the best in the future. I know he plans to stay involved
as a volunteer, and I'm happy about that.
Here’s a quick summary of what will happen next:
Barry’s last day with the Wikimedia Foundation will be August 31. It
will likely take 4-6 months for us to complete the recruitment process
for his successor.
Beginning August 31 therefore, Global Development will be co-managed
by Frank Schulenburg and Anasuya Sengupta. Anasuya will be responsible
for grantmaking and the catalyst projects: Asaf Bartov, Jessie Wild,
and Winifred Olliff will report to her, and she will manage our
relationships with CIS for India, with Oona Castro for Brazil, and
with the Arabic Language Initiative. Frank will continue, of course,
to hold responsibility for the Global Education Program, and will also
now newly take on responsibility for fellowships and Wikipedia Zero,
with Siko Bouterse and Kul Wadhwa reporting to Frank.
I want to thank Frank and Anasuya for agreeing to take on, on an
interim basis, these extra responsibilities.
Also, we’re moving Communications to Legal and Community Advocacy from
Global Development: Jay Walsh will now report to Geoff Brigham. This
is independent of Barry’s departure. Why? There’s lots of natural
synchronicity between Community Advocacy and Communications -- both
groups need to understand and support the Wikimedia communities and
ensure good communications between them and the Wikimedia Foundation,
including coordinating translations with and for the
non-English-speaking communities. And, unlike the rest of Global
Development but like Legal, Communications is a service department
that supports the entire organization/movement. So it makes sense to
me that Communications should move over to become a part of LCA.
I also want to note, because I'm not sure if it's been announced
outside the staff, that beginning August 5 Winifred will move into a
new position. She has been the Program Assistant for Global
Development: as of August 5, she will be Grants Administrator for that
team, responsible for administering Wikimedia Foundation grants, funds
awarded by the Funds Dissemination Committee and other Wikimedia
Foundation volunteer support programs, and for supporting the
Wikimedia Foundation grants program in the areas of program
development, communications, relationship-building, compliance, and
community engagement.
Again: I want to thank Barry for everything he's done for the
movement, and I look forward to his continued involvement from
Australia :-)
Thanks,
Sue

Dear all,
While at Wikimania, we all had a small India - Nepal team meet up. Here is
a brief summary of what we discussed. All the Indian and Nepali Wikimedians
were enthusiastically gathered by Malayalee Wikipedian Viswa Prabha in the
ballroom at Wikimania.
Since it was an informal meet up, we had the opportunity to discuss
anything and everything! It was awesome to see Wikipedians of all ages,
from various places in India and Nepal, all coming together to discuss the
stuff they were doing! Actually, the first team meet happened on the plane
itself - somewhere above Russia I was told :-)
>From mobile to Indic languages, GLAM, outreach in states of India, OCR for
Indian languages to some ideas that could make communication between
communities and entities easier as well as IEP, we truly learned the best
practices that have been tried and tested by fellow community members.
*OCR for Indic languages:*
Kul, Viswa Prabha, Dr Rajasekhar and Ganesh from the Nepali community had
discussions on whether OCR could be integrated and functional for Indic
language Wikiprojects since that would make the work a lot easier for many
editors. Viswa Prabha is currently working on something and his energy is
really infectious. :-)
Anyone interested can take lead for their communities as well. This would
also help the Malayalam education program in its next phase to get more
student editors on Wikisource.
*Reviving Offline/CD project:*
Harriet, who has been involved with OLPC was also present and asked
questions about the offline/CD initiative and whether the project had an
India specific section. It was suggested that although there is no scalable
tech solution to filter content appropriate for children depending on their
age groups, it could be done manually depending on the age group we're
looking at.
*Announcement page:*
By this time we all agreed that there are so many small and big projects
are happening across communities! Bishakha suggested there should be a more
central place to list out new announcements and more importantly contact
details of people who can help out with various activities. This could be
done on Meta ideally.
*
Using social media to keep vandals at bay!*
There was a brief discussion on how social media can be utilized more
effectively. Viswa Prabha weighed in saying how these social network
platforms could be avenues to deal with vandalism as well as diverse
discussions while keeping Wikipedia related discussions focused on talk
pages.
*GLAM national coordinator:*
Wikimania had a panel discussion on GLAM coordinators following which it
was also discussed whether India community or chapter should have such a
position in order to guide and coordinate and help out new folks who want
to start GLAM projects. Similarly, for WLM or such photo events, I do
recall there being a talk for valid press cards that could be given to SIGs
to help folks out in case of police trouble.
*
Outreach:*
Last but not the least, Yuvi suggested how hackathons could be an excellent
way of outreach (citing the Bangalore and Chennai examples). Nitika also
gave an update on the British Council Wikiclubs. User:Rangilo_Gujarati who
was also present there has volunteered to help with the British Council in
Pune.
It was heartbreaking to see that a lot of our fellow members could not make
it due to visa problems but hopefully, we'll have bigger meetups soon!
Attaching a photo of the meetup (photo curtsy: Rangilo_Gujarati) and a
special mention to Viswa Prabha for winning the Raffles!
Thank you,
Best,
Noopur
