Hiya,
The Mumbai Community hosted the GLAM-Creative Commons Workshop in June 2011. The event was video-graphed by Pad.ma and the video of the event is now available here. The video has been uploaded under a CC-BY-SA license and will be uploaded on Commons as well in the next few days.
Apologies in the delay in providing this link, Pad.ma were restructuring their website.
We hope that through this video, those new to CC licensing and wanting to understand it will have something to help them.
Kind Regards,

Hi all,
I am happy to share the news that User:Sreejithk2000 is now an
administrator on Wikimedia Commons.
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Administrators/Requests/Sreejithk…
AFAIK, Sreejith is the only Indian with administrative rights on the
Commons.
Do note that User:Yann <http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Yann> and
User:Wikitanvir <http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Wikitanvir> (
Bangladesh ) are also sysops on Commons.
Sreejith is a prolific contributor to English & Malayalam Wikipedias and
Commons. He has been a registered user since 2006, and has 88,000 global
edits, including 33,000 on Commons. He is also an administrator on
Malayalam Wikipedia.
So next time if you have doubts about Commons and Image Copyrights, you
know whom to sees help. :)
Wishing the very best to Sreejithk2000!
Looking forward to see more people from India active in Commons.

Dear all,
This is a slightly belated update of my experience at the Open GLAM
conference in Serbia on 24-25th February. Held in Belgrade, the conference
was one of the best events I've attended in terms of hospitality. I had a
great time and thank the organizers WM-Serbia for taking special care of
all of us.
*Highlights: *
Regarding the conference, although it was more concentrated on local
language programs, we had a few sessions in English where all of us
presented on perspectives and on going GLAM projects in our respective
countries. One of the key questions of the Serbian community was *how to
kick start their first project*. During the internal meeting on the second
day we discussed these questions in detail. I presented on the role of
outreach as crucial to GLAM developments and how a systematic approach is
needed while working with or contacting GLAMs in bureaucratic setups. We've
learnt that many institutions are already approaching them for talks.
It was great to hear Adrienne and Cristina talk about their projects which
concentrated on a variety of things including *minor language* communities,
institutional collaborations in *WikiAfrica*, training for GLAM volunteers.
We had wonderful conversations with Mile, Milos and Philip about their own
community, how things are working, the need for more volunteers.
You can find my presentation at the conference Wiki on Outreach and I have
pledged full support and help in terms of documentation, sharing best
practices and community building tips. Just to make a* link to the
Amsterdam GLAMcamp*, we realized that only reaching out to cultural
institutions and getting them to understand how GLAM works maybe a one time
challenge, but it is essential to maintain community support and interest
if we want to deliver results. There were presentations by Orsoya, Jan and
talks with Kirill, hopefully summaries and translations of which exist on
the wiki.
A big thanks to Asaf for facilitating things, Mile and Ivan for impeccable
hospitality and warmth, and all my fellow participants for the stories
shared over Rakija. :)
Thank you,
Warm regards
Noopur
WARNING: THIS IS A PARTICULARLY LONG MAIL, WHICH TALKS ABOUT A FEW PERSONAL
EXPERIENCES AS WELL.
Heya all,
So, this is the mail about the event which happened at NITT this weekend.
Before I start off, I'll apologise and say thanks to:
* Nitika Tandon, For all the support and help you have given me in the last
two months. The NITT event even reached such a stage thanks to your support
and presently the Coimbatore community is hanging by your support.
* The Chapter EC, especially Naveen, Tinu and Anirudh. You guys gave me
tremendous support for everything I've done, not just this NITT event.
So, I'll start where it matters:
Last year, NITT celebrated Wikipedia 10 at their campus. Saagar, [now] a
3rd yr B.Tech student of NITT, and Nitika [after I told her] inferred that
this meant there might've been an editor on campus. I didn't infer any such
thing. I'm very stupid in such matters.
This year, Saagar Varma, the said student was on the Marketing team of the
annual tech fest of the institute, Pragyan 2012. He sent a mail to the
foundation office in the US, who directed him to Swaroop Rao. Swaroop, due
to exams forwarded it to the Tamil Nadu community. Bala couldn't be part of
it and said so earlier.
I was initially reluctant, but two of my cousins, one who is an ex-NITT-ian
and the other who attended Pragyaan in 2009-10 convinced me to take it up.
The MoU:
Pragyan got ISO certification this year, something that is great. The ISO
certification it received is the same one which Bombay Airport has. It
required us to sign an MoU with them, which explicitly stated that we'd
have to give swags, something which I convinced them hard that it would be
difficult as we are a Non profit body without any proper funding. We run on
donations right?
The MoU finally got signed without the swags part by Naveen and the
organisers of Pragyaan.
The actual event.
I was promised support in the form of volunteers, internet connectivity,
atleast 70 people participating etc.
Volunteers, I got none, internet connectvity, happened after the the thing
started, and only 17 people finally filled the sheet that I passed around.
Nitika sent over a presentation, which is where I screwed up. I should've
seen it a week in advance to prepare, which I did the night before the
workshop. I wanted to do it at a Cyber cafe before leaving, but couldn't.
I lost two slides due to format conversion to pptx, but I still explained.
Accomodation and transportation:
I had clearly stated two people would be attending around a month in
advance.
THere was no proper acomodation, I slept two nights on Saagar's bed as i
had said okay to it.
Sohan arrived on Saturday morn and left the same night.
He arrived at 6.15 when half the crowd pours into Trichy. He could've been
picked up, which, didn't happen. Neither was he dropped back.
, on the other hand arrived at 2.35am, but chose to go around the district
[lying to my parents that I was picked up, if they found out, I'd be
screwed up now], and went off t Tanjore to enjoy some Idlis and Boiled corn
at 4am in the morning before heading back to Trichy and then the institute.
The main issue:
Sohan was treated badly. He is a working professional, someone who has
finished studying, and is therefore senior to anyone prganising Pragyaam.
The event is handled only bu UG students.
I, on the other hand, am merely BSc student. The animosity between BSc and
Engg students is a known fact. It didn't make any difference to me whehter
I was treated well or not. I ended the trip with a visit to my uncle in the
city, before I headed back home. All I feel is, I should've made a trip
home instead. I took two days off anyway. Home would've meant more
Wikipedia editing, time with parents [something which a Hostel students
longs for] and well, I just love home. Especially after what just happened.
Sohan, I feel sad that I dragged you unnecesarily into this mess. Please
accept my apology.
The bottom line.
The event was poorly handled, and Sohan wasn't treated well. I don't care
what they think of Wikipedia, they'll still use it for assignments.
Sohan and I attended the McAffee Security quiz and the Pragyaan Main Quiz,
both of which had the entire text copied word-to word, with citations
removed from Wikipedia.
I guess this'll mean I'll stop volunteering for academies from now on and
will concentrate more on Wiki editing and meetups in Coimbatore and
Bangalore.
Sorry for screwing up guys, this was my second academy, and I had played a
much smaller role in my first one. [
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Academy/India/2010/Bangalore1]
Hope something will be learned from this.
We cannot give Swags again.
Wikipedia is considered Social Service by some here.

Hey Lodewijk,
I think that's where our private conversation stopped too. We are not sure
if there is a wider definition of monuments that can provide us more than
3000. Though we are trying to get one. I am copying this conversation to
India community also since many may not have joined this list.

Noopur
PS. Those interested in Wiki loves monuments, please do join this list so
we can avoid cross posting.

Hi all,
I'm glad to see so much activity ongoing on this list! For those that do
not know me: I'm Lodewijk from the Netherlands, and I'm (amongst other
things) one of the people coordinating the Wiki Loves Monuments initiatives
on an international level. I have been involved in the 2010 contest in the
Netherlands and the 2011 in Europe.
I the past there have been some discussions on whether India would be
willing and able to join Wiki Loves Monuments this year. Is there any
update on this?
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012_in_India
shows
quite a big number of involved volunteers, so that is exciting! Especially
of interest may be the suggested timeline we have put up on
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012/Timeline
and
which you could copy and localize (and adapt). It gives a good impression
of the work ahead and what probably should take priority.
Some relevant points would definitely be:
* What is the status of the monument lists? Are they available, well
structured and already on the wiki?
* How many items do you have? To have a successful contest, there should be
quite some monuments in every major city so that everyone can easily find a
monument nearby where they live. That helps to decrease the threshold. At
the same time, every monument needs to have a certain level of relevance of
course.
* Are you in contact with the relevant government authorities (that make
decisions on whether a monument will be listed or not etc., but also who
promote heritage in your country if there is such an organization. Possibly
tourist boards.).
* Will you be able to organize this at all in the whole of India, or is it
only likely to succeed in a few states. I think a good project in some
states is more important than a bad project in the whole country.
Finally, we would like to offer our help where-ever possible. If you have
your discussions on the wlm-in mailing list (
http://lists.wmnederland.nl/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/wlm-in) then I can
also participate in discussions where relevant. Also, if that would be
helpful we could perhaps think about organizing a brainstorm
session/workshop in India with the volunteers interested in organizing the
contest. If there is any other way you think we could be helpful, such as
contacts with supragovernmental organizations, please let us know!
I'm looking forward to an update and hope for a lot of enthusiasm!
Kind regards,
Lodewijk
Hi
I was looking through the mailing lists, and I saw this list called
India-l. It seems to have only staff members subscribed. This was created
recently by Melanie Brown, so I am assuming good faith and asking if I
missed the announcement or it is forthcoming?
Can someone clarify-
* If the list is private for the India staff? if so, you might want to
consider changing the archive and access settings to private.
* If the list is indeed for India issues, like it says, in the description,
I think its existence should at least be made public to the Indian
community? and have more than 2 Indians on it.
Regards

Iv been taking part in the ongoing Assessment Drive @ WP:India during the last couple of days and have found quite a few anomalies. Yesterday, I found a few talk pages tagged WP:India, but the pages were redirects to the same topic with a slightly different name. At first, I thought it was extremely rare, however I have come across more examples today [1] and [2]. This is easy to miss out if one is not careful (i.e. if ones checks the article and goes back, your going to assess the redirect when the article talk is somewhere else!).
Apart from this, Im quite appalled at the level at which WP:India currently is at on en.wiki, I would not be surprised to find WP:India in better shape on indic wikis. Some interesting statistics:1. About 94k articles tagged WP:India
2. more than 50% of our articles are stubs (50k of 94k roughly)3. about 250 articles are GA or above in quality (thats about 0.25% of 94k)
4. then there are 8k categories - not actually articles
I have a feeling that we might need a good rejuvenation plan to look at quality and not just expansion. Some of the articles Iv come across are IMO not really noteworthy and have been prodded (lists of people, companies and even actual trees in different cities (i.e. tree outside x building on x road in x city)!).
