Apology: I am not from Indus Valley and not even a north Indian; I don't
know whether I am allowed to write here. ;-) Anyway I am posting
because this may affect so many languages, including those "True Indian"
Indus Vally languages. :-p
Dear Friends,
I have seen extensive development in ULS, and it is live in
translatewiki.net. It is a kind of joined form of Narayam and Webfonts,
and intended to provide easy access to any users including new users in
non-Latin wikies. It looks like sooner or later will reach our wikies.
I agree that Narayam and Webfonts need some UI love, but even with that
fact, they are easily understandable and usable. Atleast to me, ULS is
no ullas. It is complex and UI is too confusing. For eg, you may need to
enable keymap on each text area before typing in your language. I
switched myself to IBus, just for convenience.
I hope I am wrong, but I urge others to check ULS and report problems
find by you. Doing so, it is possible to make it atleast usable. :-)

The word "Indic" refers generally to the Indo-Aryan family of languages,
which does not include Dravidian languages prevalent in Southern India.
Hence, bunching the entire system of Dravidian languages together with the
Indo-Aryan languages in India may seem derogatory to some, and reasonably
so.
Just my two cents,

Subject: Workshop during Quark 2013
To: "Anirudh Bhati" <anirudh(a)wikimedia.in>
Dear Sir,
Hope you are having a great day.
Foremost we would like to express our gratitude for the interest that
you have shown to our proposal.
We are aware of the Hackathon that was organized by Wikimedia during
Atmos at BITS Pilani- Hyderabad. We would like to have a workshop for
2 days which can be followed by a Hackathon on the third day. This
will ensure that students learn and then get to test their skills. It
would be an added incentive to the participants if Wikimedia could
provide certificates on completion of course.
The participants of the workshop will be highly enthusiastic
undergraduate science, technology and engineering students with keen
interest in programming and development. The course content and the
format of the workshop can be something that you deem fit for the
participants with the above mentioned qualifications.
We are expecting around 150 to 200 participants for the workshop.
Hence we feel 5 volunteers will be more than sufficient enough to
conduct the workshop. If you feel otherwise please let us know.
We are willing to provide for travel expenses of the volunteers from
Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore along with their accommodation during their
stay here for Quark 2013.
We would be happy to help you with any further queries.
Thanking you in anticipation for positive response at the earliest.

Hello all,
The Wikimedia Language Engineering team[1] invites Indic wikipedians and
people who are interested in language support for their wikiprojects for a
meetup with us. Language teams are Wikimedia community members with a
common interest (compare with SIG) to help improve, provide feedback and
help educate our language communities of readers and editors about
Wikimedia software enhancements and tools built by the langauge engineering
team. This meetup is to get a face-to-face introduction to language
technologies available on the Wikimedia websites and learn more about how
to best use these. We will be in Pune[2] on the 4th November and
Bangalore[3] on 11th November. (For a change a Bangalore Wikimeetup can be
held in a different part of city :)). Please sign up on the page, looking
forward to meeting you and working together on improving language support :)

A Day Spent well.
The Wikipedia Women Workshop which took place on November, 4th 2012 in
Vidyalankar Institute of Technology (VIT), Wadala was indeed a
success.
The people who volunteered in organizing this workshop were Bishakha
Datta, Moksh Juneja, Karthik Nadar, Pranav Curumsey, Pradeep Mohandas,
Anshuman Fotedar, Aditi Juneja, Harriet Vidyasagar, Nikita Belavate,
Netra Parikh, Noopur Raval, Netha Hussain. All discussions and
planning done while organizing this workshop for women paid off. In
all, 70+ women participants attended the workshop.
The workshop started with a short introduction after which, wasting no
time, the women participants moved on to learning how to edit
Wikipedia which was though by the present on ground volunteers. The
participants were were divided in groups and every group had to create
a new article which wasn't already available on Wikipedia. In the
process, women interacted with the volunteers, asked question
regarding Wikipedia. Every group at least had added introduction to
the new article.
Having done with the basic editing, a general presentation on
Wikipedia was given by some of the volunteers. This was followed by
question and answers regarding the same. By this time, it was already
1.30pm, so the lunch was announced. After having lunch, the
participants got back to their seats. Pretty much everybody stayed
back post lunch. Moksh continued with teaching how to edit Wikipedia.
This time it wasn't it in groups though. "References" and "Notability"
were the main topics that were covered in this session.
Anshuman and Karthik then proceeded with teaching photo uploads on
Wikipedia. Quiz was conducted towards the end and Wikipedia-Tshirts
were given as prizes for giving right answers. Karthik, then also
showcased the winning images of Wiki Loves Momunents 2012 India. The
long day came to an end with an overwhelming response and a call for
organizing many such activities. The feedback received was positive.
The participants enjoyed the workshop.
We are thankful to everybody who made this event a great one. Thanks
to all the volunteers. Special thanks to Moksh and Karthik who went
out of the way to get everything arranged before hand at the venue, to
Netha and Noopur for making it to the workshop and for working hand in
hand with the Mumbai Community, to Srikanth Ramakrishnan who
constantly stayed in touch for online help.
Special thanks to whole Vidyalankar team. Vishwas Deshpande, Founder
of Vidyalankar, who gave us an opportunity to to do the Mumbai's first
Wiki Workshop for Women at Vidyalankar. Milind Tadvalkar (Director)
and Seema Shah (Principal), Jayprakash Kurmi and Vivek and the
complete IT Team at VIT, Mahesh from Canteen for an awesome Pav Bhaji
for Lunch. Another thanks to Netra Parikh, for giving us enough place
at her office, Pinstorm, for all out pre-meetings. Thanks to all.
Regards,
Krutikaa Jawanjal
