a nice effort of malayalam wiki community they translated their FAQ from
malayalam to english. That translation helped us a lot for preparing FAQ for
Hindi Wikipedia.Special thanks to Shiju Alex and Junad pv who gave this FAQ
its Final pdf form.
Thank you and Regards

Dear Indic language wikipedians,
The logos of some of the Indic language wikipedias are updated recently.
Following are those wikipedias:
- Marathi - http://mr.wikipedia.org/

- Sanskrit - http://kn.wikipedia.org/
- Odia (Oriya) - http://or.wikipedia.org/
Among this, the Odia wikipedia logo is updated yesterday and is done by a
new wikipedian. Thanks to Subhashish who started editing in Odia wikipedia
recently. He had done a wonderful job.
The logos for the following language wikipedias still need to be updated.
- Assamese - http://as.wikipedia.org
- Bhojpuri - http://bh.wikipedia.org
- Bishnupriya Manipuri - http://bpy.wikipedia.org/
- Divehi - http://dv.wikipedia.org
- Gujarati - http://gu.wikipedia.org
- Hindi - http://hi.wikipedia.org
- Kashmiri - http://ks.wikipedia.org/
- Nepali - http://ne.wikipedia.org
- Pali - http://pi.wikipedia.org
- Punjabi - http://pa.wikipedia.org
- Sindhi - http://sd.wikipedia.org
- Tamil - http://ta.wikipedia.org
Hope the logos will be updated soon by the respective language community.
Kindly create a new logo, upload it to commons, and log a bug in bugzilla.
In case you require any assistance please contact me.

Subject: [Wikimediaindia-l] Updating the logo of Indian Language Wikipedias
To: "Discussion list on Indian language projects of Wikimedia." <
wikimediaindia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Dear Indic language wikipedians,
As many of you know the default skin of wikipedias (including that of all
Indic language wikipedias) is moved to the new Vector skin some time back.
Please see the below mail that I sent to this list regrading this on *2010
July 1*.
As some of you know, along with this update, the logo of wikipedia is also
updated. The current logo is available
here<http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia/2.0>.
But even though almost 6 months had passed after this major update, only
Bengali <http://bn.wikipedia.org>, Malayalam
<http://ml.wikipedia.org>, Urdu<http://ur.wikipedia.org>,
and Telugu <http://te.wikipedia.org> wiki communities had took initiatives
to update the logo. The logo update is still pending for the following
Indian language wikis.
- Assamese - http://as.wikipedia.org
- Bhojpuri - http://bh.wikipedia.org
- Bishnupriya Manipuri - http://bpy.wikipedia.org/
- Divehi - http://dv.wikipedia.org
- Gujarati - http://gu.wikipedia.org
- Hindi - http://hi.wikipedia.org
- Kannada - http://kn.wikipedia.org/
- Kashmiri - http://ks.wikipedia.org/
- Marathi - http://mr.wikipedia.org
- Nepali - http://ne.wikipedia.org
- Oriya - http://or.wikipedia.org
- Pali - http://pi.wikipedia.org
- Punjabi - http://pa.wikipedia.org
- Sanskrit - http://sa.wikipedia.org
- Sindhi - http://sd.wikipedia.org
- Tamil - http://ta.wikipedia.org
Carry Bass (User:Bastique <http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Bastique>)
has took initiative to create the new logo for some of the Indian language
wikis. But for languages like Kannada, Oriya, and so on even that is
pending. Even if the new logo is created a bug needs to be filed by the
respective wiki community to change the logo. So for most of the Indian
wikis both these tasks are pending now.
I request the respective language communities to take initiatives to create
the new logo and file a bug for this update. The guidelines for creating the
new logo is listed at
http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Wikimedia_official_marks/Word_mark_crea…
Please write to me if any of the language communities require any type of
support regarding this.
Regards
Shiju Alex

Subject: [Wikimediaindia-l] Updating the default skin of Indian Language
Wikipedias
Hi All,
As some of you already know, *Usability Team<http://usability.wikimedia.org>
* is driving the task of updating the default skin of all WikiMedia
Foundation wikis to a skin called
*Vector*<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Vector>.
English Wikipedia and some other big wikis have already moved to *Vector
skin* some time back. Apart from the UI, the logo of Wikipedia is also
updated <http://blog.wikimedia.org/2010/wikipedia-in-3d/>.
Yesterday (2010 June 30) at 10:30 PM IST, some other wikis (that have
carried out the formalities required for the UI change) are also moved to
the new UI. Among this, 3 Indian Language Wikipedias are also there.
Following are those Indian Language wikipedias:
- Malayalam - http://ml.wikipedia.org
- Bengali - http://bn.wikipedia.org
- Telugu - http://te.wikipedia.org
Please note the new default skin and the new logo that are appearing on
these wikis. (You may need to clear the cache to see the changes. )
Now to move your language wiki to Vector, you have to perform the following
two major operations:
1. Update the logo of your wiki
2. Localize the Vector skin system messages
Logo update
For some languages, logo is already updated. See the list here:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia/2.0
If your wiki's logo is missing from this list, then you need to create the
new logo based on the instructions listed on this page.
http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Wikimedia_official_marks/About_the_offi…
Localizing the Vector skin System messages
For the current update, you need to localize the Vector skin system
messages. To localize the system messages, use Translate wiki -
http://translatewiki.net/wiki/Main_Page
The current Localization statistics of Vector skin system messages is
available here. http://translatewiki.net/wiki/User:GerardM/usability-stats
You can see that many Indian languages (for example, Tamil) are missing from
this list. The reason is, none of the Vector skin system messages are
localized for those languages. Even for the big Languages like Hindi and
Marathi the percentage of localized messages is very low.
So I request the respective Indian Language Wikipedia communities to take
required initiative to switch over to the new Skin. Usability team is
planning for next set of switch over by the end of July. So you have
almost one month to finish these tasks.
Once you finish the above tasks you need to:
- Let the community know about this upcoming update (Use the village
pump, Site Notice, Mailing list, and so on)
- Appoint some volunteers to answer the questions related to this
- Appoint an ambassador to collect the feedback/issues/bugs and report it
to the Usability Team.
Please let me know in case you require any support regarding this.
Regards
Shiju Alex

Hello friends,
Article selection for Wikipedia for Schools (Offline Ed) - Indian
version has begun. I have started selecting articles. I chose
Geography as a relatively uncontroversial topic to begin with. The
first items added were the states & union territories -
uncontroversial, just added them all. The next I have selected are
Indian cities.
[[User:AshLin/Work_list]]

Any that you feel should be removed/added? Your thoughts on this issue?
Warm regards,

Hi all,
Happy to announce that Short URLs are now available in every page of Tamil
Wikipedia. Sharing Indic URLs with unicode characters are never fun since
one will get an ugly looking URL like
http://ta.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%AE%B5%E0%AE%BF%E0%AE%95%E0%AF%8D%E0%AE%95%…
.
(Forget about twitter, even mails are tough). Now its easier
http://tawp.in/r/262 !! The short url is visible on top right of every page,
extreme right of the article title. For the technically inclined, the
shortening happens by encoding the page id of a mediawiki page to base36 (No
database for shorturls here!) and hence doesnt depend on any other server.
I would like to thank User:Mountain[1] for the shortify project[2] which
powers this. (Gerard, this is already localized in tamil, malayalam :) ). It
would be great if this could be "extensionized" in mediawiki as its a
feature must for wiki's running in non latin languages.I would also like to
thank YuviPanda for setting this up on his server and doing some
customization for Tamil wiki. (YuviPanda is an ubergeek looking to do some
serious work for mediawiki in GSoC), Kishore for some quick css help in
making this happen.
It would be great if this can be supported by Wikimedia itself. Even if the
fancy twitter friendly short domain name is not there,if just the
redirection part is hosted for all projects on wikimedia servers(existing
domain names will do), it will be of great use, especially for non latin
languages.
I understand Malayalam wikipedia has a redirect mechanism based on the
english interwiki title for sometime now.Even we would want to do this, but
am thinking if redirects are an optimal, search engine friendly solution or
are there better ways of doing it.Can someone please educate me. Also IMHO
URLs with transliterated text will help Indic languages. But making them
search friendly is a key thing and if we could do this, am sure the
readership would bound to increase a few times.(Not everyone knows to type
in regional language and many use transliterated text for search and then
consume vernacular content). Wikipedia is missing them!

He has also convinced http://www.ldfkannur.org/ web team to change there
license. Now they are also creative commons.
Thanks a lot Shiju !!! ... Need more site creative commons
I think it is change in happening though it is slow.

: Verrry funny !!!! Thanks and compliments to you , mother India !!!,
your 21st century verry very well informed law minister is making you
and us feel so proud !! Think mother India, think again, think to change
this wrong Indian democracy, where people have been voting anonymously,
no education qualification or background needed for voting
and even no qualification and background needed for getting elected.Hope
your fresh generations in the law ministry change all that for better !
:All our best wishes to the incumbent Law Minister in getting chance to
choose best chief justices for India and best wishes for his career to
grow into foreign minister of India, a chief justice of India, chief
justice of International court President of India and last but not least
to become chief of United Nations
@Oh those all who gave Vaidic Sutras in ancient India -wherever you
are, its good you credited all your work to God and did not do anonymous
writing otherwise Independent India's law ministry would have been
pretty unhappy with you !!!
@Respected Rabindranath Tagoreji Wherever you are , The best thing ever
did for yourself is you did not write following poem anonymously
otherwise Law Ministry Independent India would not have been pleased
with you
Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high;
Where
knowledge is free;
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments
by narrow domestic walls;
Where words come out from the depth of truth;
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection:
Where
the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert
sand of dead habit;
Where the mind is lead forward by thee into
ever-widening thought and action—Into that heaven of freedom,
my Father,
let my country awake.
My Father, please please please, let my ... honorable Ministers and Ministries awake !!!
Hi All,
I'm not fully sure where the community is going on this topic, but here's my
two cents on deletion of articles in Indian /any language wikipedias:
*It should not happen. Period.*
At least not until we reach a qualitative number that is proportional to the
population of people in the world that knows that language. Look at the
charts. Where is any Indian language? Hindi is bloody
39th!<http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/List_of_Wikipedias>The Lithuanian
language has more articles than we do! Do you think there are
more Lithuanian speaking people on this planet than there are Hindi speaking
people?? How about we ask them if they went on a murdering spree when they
were #39??
Q: But 95% are vandalism/biased/useless!
A: So put a "Vandalized article" template on it that says it in HUMONGOUSLY
HUGE letters that even a chimpanzee can read and put it out there that we
need someone to come and un-vandalize it, for the humanity's sake! If we
treat articles on wikipedia as living documents, then what we are doing by
deletion is genocide.
Q: But they decrease the quality!
A: Why are you expecting a 5 minute old baby to score well in a 12th grade
exam? Do you mind giving it some time to mature on its own before failing it
and then fussing about "oh, it's not good enough!" Who gave anybody the
right to judge a baby's future potential?
Q: But they are dangerous to the community and Humanity and blah and
blooh...!
A: First, take your ego and any pride you may have, and shove it. Then,
prove your claims. One stub/vandalized article that is publicly declared to
be a stub / vandalized article.... is going to end the world? Oh, really!!
Is it going to show India in a bad light? Who the bloody hell gave
wikipedians the authority to represent India? Who voted you into power??
Does the English Wikipedia represent UK/USA ? Can we please de-link the
nation from its languages? Last I checked, a lot of non-Indians speak Hindi
the same way a lot of Indians speak German or Japanese.
Q: What's the problem with deleting crappy articles?
A: The exact same problem that comes from Indians aborting a girl child
because in their present environment they feel she will be a crappy addition
to the family. Right now, at this point in time and space, YOU may feel that
the particular article isn't necessary. Your opinions are subjective to the
environment you are in. Your opinion may change tomorrow, but that
contributor you chased out will not come back just like all those girls we
aborted will not come back, or like all those mothers who were forced to
abort, will not forgive their husband or in-laws. I beg YOU to live and let
live. Suspend your judgment; don't be so harsh in your pursuit for
perfection. It might turn out that the article you allowed to exist today
may become the BEST article in that wikipedia tomorrow, the same way that
girl child we do not abort today may become a role model for all Indians
tomorrow.
*Suggestion: How about creating a "baby" template and so setting a proper
path to maturity, making room for the extremities of puberty (aka, bias,
vandalism etc etc) in between while preventing this genocidally judgmental
behavior?
*
Q: What's the problem with deleting?
A: Do you have a problem with NOT deleting? Are those few bytes occupied
going to bring the servers down? Do you mind putting a template there and
backing off? Do you mind thinking constructively for once?
Q: If we encourage the vandals, they'll get more prolific and they'll...
A: ...And we'll revert the instances of vandalism, identify and block the
repeat offenders, or influence them to turn a page like we always do. Every
vandal is a human being that isn't programmed the way your are accusing
him/her to be. Nobody has any evil agenda against our wikipedias. There is
no incentive for anyone to do what we are fear-mongering about; rather the
only incentive exists in the opposite direction. Stop living in a warped
psychological state where we need an enemy to justify our own existence,
stop destroying the future in the name of defense against an enemy that does
not exist. If you're sure they do, please prove your claims. The problem we
are discussing is about deletion of new articles. Don't hijack it with
insecurities, negativity and fear-mongering.
Even in English Wikipedia, there is a growing movement to stop speedy
deletions that are being perceived by many to have gone out of control and
to be doing more harm than good, for they are giving disproportionate power
to the incumbents. Over the next few years, expect a rot and stagnation
there if these destructive attitudes continue. Just because some one else is
possibly jumping off a cliff, why should we?
*Some wikipedians look at articles the way they are and wonder "Why"? and
then go around deleting them like it's their God-given duty to throw the
baby out with the bath water.
I dream of articles that never were, wonder "Why Not?" and believe in
allowing those 95% new crazy articles to EXIST, because within a few years,
as surely as the sun rises from the East, I guarantee you almost all those
articles will transform into non-vandalized and good articles if you just
allowed them to breathe a little instead of murdering them.
Controversial Statement: Today, it is the deleters among the community that
are the real Vandals of Indian language wikipedias, for they are
unintentionally destroying the future while pretending to defend a feeble
present.
*
(hey, we say the new editors shouldn't take it negatively or personally when
they are charged with vandalism or bias and their creations are wiped out...
now let's see our oldies stand up to the same test! Feeling offended on
being called Vandals, guys? Don't take it personally! :P)
Yeah, that's about it. Peace, May you all Live and Let Live and not commit
bloody genocide in the name of quality.
PS: The baby analogy will DEFINITELY bring more female editors in. Try it!
Cheers,
