Hey Guys,
I am Wasim, Campus Ambassador at the India Education Program.
I have been reading the mails from the wiki lovers about the so called
DEATH and POST MORTEM of the India Education Program. It feels terrible to
hear such words but on the other hand we are going to accept this and learn
from the same. As we all know the program was a pilot program and it is
just a BABY, at this stage we all make mistakes.
- About the student selection in future I think it is better to keep it
optional so that we get more QUALITY instead of QUANTITY.
- We want some more participation from the Teachers, so that the
articles are checked regularly.
- Online Ambassadors need to be more ACTIVE so that the burden on CA's
is reduced to some extent.
- Planning needs to be done as far as the Article selection is concerned
to avoid unnecessary copy paste.
Talking about the involvement, it is voluntary and we need to step up and
take the responsibility to make it successful. If we just keep complaining
about the things like *"we had no idea of what to do"*, then I don't think
the program is going to work with your support. Sometimes you need to lead
and take up the challenge, as it is rightly said by someone *"RESPONSIBILITY
IS ALWAYS TAKEN - NEVER GIVEN".*
*
*
To be honest we have learnt a lot from the program and we are sure to work
on the* delta's (Δ) .* Also if you guys can appreciate the fraction of work
we have done it would be motivating and in future we would be better than
now. We dared to think out of the box and had the courage to stand in front
of 1000 students and urged them to write on Wikipedia.
There are some things which cannot be experienced by sitting at home. We
were present right there to experience the feeling of pride and victory in
the student eyes when he was able to write a paragraph on Wikipedia, that
really matters in a pilot program.
Criticizing Ideas demotivates everyone, and It gives an impression to the
participants that their Ideas will get them into trouble. The thing is
wackiest ideas are the most creative.
*"Our greatest glory consist not in never falling, but in rising every time
we fall." *
*

*Thanks & Regards,*

Subject: Mobile Photo Uploads: Android uploader and more
To: commons-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org
Hi folks,
as you may or may not know, we ran a coding competition in October
which included mobile photo upload as one of the challenges.
You can see the submissions here:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/October_2011_Coding_Challenge/Submissions
The submissions include a "Share with Commons" application for
Android. It can be installed through the Android market and the source
code is available on GitHub.
https://market.android.com/details?id=nl.michiel1972.mainhttps://github.com/michiel1972/shareWithCommons
The application adds a "Share with Wikimedia Commons" option to the
"Share with" menu that's available in the Android Gallery app. That
is, when you're viewing a picture on your phone, you can easily upload
that particular picture to Commons through the same process that's
used for Picasa and other websites.
I've tested it, and it works. It doesn't prompt for categories and the
license selection is basically just a template field, but it gets the
job done. Images uploaded using the app are added to this category:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Images_uploaded_by_Android_app
We'll reach out to the author to see if they're interested in
continuing to develop it and host it in Wikimedia's SVN.
There are some other submissions as well:
* An effort to build uploading functionality into the official
Wikipedia Android app by User:Tpt
* Three iOS / Objective C implementations of varying degrees of
completeness. I haven't tested those yet, but we'll review them as
well and share notes.
The full list of submissions can be found here -- please add your own
comments on the talk page:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/October_2011_Coding_Challenge/Submissions
Thanks :)

That is no answer. Will those people who are not able to register be
allowed to attend Jimbo's speech or not?

Ashwin,
You are aware that there is more than one person in the OC. Please refrain from calling out to a particular person on a public email, if you wish to do so please send a private email to the person concerned.
There is provision for 10 registration desks 7am onwards. We recommend people coming in early keeping in mind that they need to register.
Kind Regards,

If Jimbo is going to speak to everyone at 0830 hours, you probably want everybody seated by 0815hours. The registration team will not be able to handle 700 registrations in forty five minutes, assuming people turn up at 0730 hours. We need to make provision so that registration does not become a barrier to Jimbo's speech which most people will certainly miss if it is compulsory to get past the main door.

I thought I'd share with you a couple of links that are of relevance to the India Education Program. As you are aware, we are running a pilot of the education program in Pune. We are collating hard numbers to evaluate the pilot - and we'll share a full evaluation as soon as it is ready. However, it is clear that there are a number of mistakes that have been made - some of which ought to have been avoided (especially with regards to communicating stronger with the global wikipedia community, not agreeing to so many students signing up, anticipating the copy-pasting issue, etc.)
There've been many learnings that we're taking from it and Nitika has been collating these at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_-_India_Programs/Educat… Please do note that this page is a draft and is very much work-in-progress. In addition, do also check out the discussion page - which we are trying to have as a focal point for all discussion regarding the education program.
In addition, Signpost covered the education program on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/2011-11-07/Interv… and there are some very nuanced and insightful comments on it.
I wanted to share these two pages because some of you might not be aware of them. Please feel free to join the conversations on either/both page.
I also do want to publicly acknowledge the stunning work of the Campus Ambassadors. I know they have taken a lot of flak and my heart goes out to them. You are an awesome team and it's been wonderful to see you at work. Your fingerprints are all over every good article! Thank you!
I also know that there have been wonderful contributions by a bunch of students and I do hope their fantastic accomplishments are not lost out in the discussion on the pilot's problems. Do check out some more of the geat work of students (in addition to the ones Nitika had shared earlier)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Challenges_of_Inflationary_Policy_In_Indiahttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Private_sector_banks_in_Indiahttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Credit_Controlhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commercial_paper_in_Indiahttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_money_markethttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Risk_management_in_Indian_bankshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monetary_policy_of_India
Over the next few weeks, we will take an objective, data and fact driven review of the pilot and then determine the best way forward. We will learn from our mistakes and will do so with brutal integrity and objectivity.
Warm Regards,
hisham
Hello all!
I am delighted to inform all of you that I will be attending the second Wiki
GLAMcamp <http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAMcamp_Amsterdam> happening in
Amsterdam in the first week of December. I am the only participant from the
Indian subcontinent and will be attending the workshop to learn best
practices in GLAM, case studies and strategies for new chapters. I am
grateful to WMF and WM-NL for giving me a scholarship and facilitating my
stay there. I am informing you all so that you don't miss out on the
outreach talk at the Wikiconference. I also hope to get your serious
insights on how we can take it forward from there!
Some serious outreach required!
