Hi all,
I was browsing though and found only one userbox made by somebody who
is in Vishakapatnam.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Userboxes/Cities
{Template:User Visakhapatnam}}
I am no great designer but do see the code to hack something together here :-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Template
Now I don't know how good/ugly it will be but would be nice to have
some city templates
which might also encourage newbies to the group and can be used to
beautify our own userpages (which can be part of sharing perhaps
showing off during the WP:Event) .
Just a thought. If somebody wants to try to do something, most welcome
otherwise I would try to get my head around it and get atleast
something up either by week-end or next week at latest.
I am not one with sense on colors and stuff (design) .

Hi, everyone!
Just three days until we celebrate a decade of Wikipedia: more than
300 events in 104 countries! Amazing.
Below is the final release you are free to distribute anytime after
1PM UTC tomorrow, January 12. Again, feel free to edit or change it
anyway you like. It's for you to use however you need.
Just so you know, Jay is going to send this out to press tomorrow at
1PM UTC. It's going out to the media list a few days early to make
sure people have it in enough time to write something by Saturday.
I'm personally so proud to be apart of this movement and love seeing
everyone --press, everyday people, community members-- excited and
celebrating.
Congrats to you all! You do amazing work.
See you soon (If the snow stops sometime tonight!)

Wikipedia Celebrates 10 Years of Free Knowledge
Wikipedia users and contributors mark the project's first decade with
events around the world
San Francisco, January 15, 2011 -- On this day ten years ago, a
website with a funny name invited people everywhere to come together
to create a free encyclopedia. The initial results were underwhelming.
The article "Astronomer" simply said: "Scientist whose area of
Research is Astronomy." Sweden: "Country in Northern Europe.
Inhabitants are called Swedes. Language spoken is Swedish. Capital is
Stockholm." Physics: "Physics is a very broad subject."
Following these humble beginnings, Wikipedia grew quickly, and 1,000
articles were written in less than a month. Over the next five years,
many new language versions were launched, and Wikipedia began to
surpass traditional reference sources in breadth and depth. The secret
to its success: anyone can edit any article. In January 2006,
Wikipedia volunteer Gareth Owen wrote on his user page: "The problem
with Wikipedia is that it only works in practice. In theory, it's a
total disaster."
Wikipedia is now consulted by more than 400 million people every
month. It provides instant access to high quality and in-depth
information, free of charge and free of advertising. In the last
decade, a vast and unique global volunteer community has come together
to create more than 17 million articles in 270 languages, advancing
the cause of free knowledge for every person on the planet.
Today, January 15, the Wikipedia community is coming together in more
than 200 locations all over the planet to celebrate the 10th
anniversary of the free encyclopedia. From a conference in New York to
a concert in Prague, from the launch of a new school project in
Nairobi to a museum bootcamp in Amsterdam, from a beer-meet in
Bucharest to a film screening in Tel Aviv, the events are organized by
volunteers and Wikimedia chapters, as well as independent supporters.
The events are open to participation by anyone and reflect the
diversity of the community.
Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia, recalled: "It's hard to imagine
that it's been 10 years since I first edited Wikipedia. I remember
that first day. I clicked on 'Edit' and I wrote 'Hello World', and
that was the beginning of Wikipedia and all the things that have come
since then. I want to thank everyone who has helped. I want to thank
all the people who have edited Wikipedia, who have contributed to this
great knowledge base. I want to thank everybody who is reading
Wikipedia, who is really engaging with ideas and knowledge. That's
what we made it for: we made it for you to read."
Wikipedia is operated by the Wikimedia Foundation, a charitable
non-profit organization established by Wales in 2003. It is entirely
supported by donations, and just completed the most successful
fundraiser in its history, with more than 500,000 individual donations
totaling more than $16 million.
Sue Gardner, Wikimedia Foundation Executive Director, has ambitious
goals for the future. "We want to reach a billion people by 2015. We
want to persuade more readers to edit. More women. More people from
the Global South. We know that the more diverse the editing community
becomes, the more comprehensive, accurate and rich the encyclopedia
will be."
Jimmy Wales joined her call to action: "Even though we've got millions
of articles, even though we're in hundreds of languages, there's still
a lot of work to do. So, I want everybody out there, if you've never
edited Wikipedia, try it - just click 'edit'."

The Wikimedia Foundation is the non-profit organization which operates

Wikipedia and the other projects operated by the Wikimedia Foundation
receive 410 million unique visitors per month, making them the 5th
most popular web property world-wide (Nov, 2010). Available in more
than 270 languages, Wikipedia contains more than 17 million articles
contributed by a global volunteer community of more than 100,000
people. Based in San Francisco, California, the Wikimedia Foundation
is an audited, 501(c)(3) charity that is funded primarily through
donations and grants.

Dear all,
Please note the Wikipedia week initiative taken by the IIIT Bangalore
students. This is a great initiative to bring in students to actively
contribute from that institution.
IIIT B students and few other colleges spontaneously volunteered for the
recent Wikipedia stall we had in the World Sanskrit conference to create
awareness for wikipedia in Sanskrit and other Indian languages. (
http://bit.ly/sansbookfair)
It would be great to see more college students come up initiatives like
these.
Kudos Srikanta and team. Let us know how we can support this initiative.
Best regards
Arun

Hi everyone,
As part of the 10th anniversary of Wikipedia, we at IIIT-B are running an
event called "IIIT-B PGDSD Wikipedia Week" throughout this week.
*Objectives of this event*
1. Volunteer at the World Sanskrit Book fair and motivate people to
contribute articles in Sanskrit language. [3 students have volunteered]
2. Volunteer and participate at the 10at anniversary celebration [7
students have registered]
3. Pick an English article and translate it to the [Kannada, Hindi, Telugu,
Tamil] and submit the articles to the respective wikis.
*Impact expected*
1. Motivate students to participate in the Wikipedia anniversary event and
take part in Bangalore chapter events
2. Empower students to contribute not only in English but also in different
local languages
@Arun I have a group of 7 students who are ready to volunteer, We thought
that, we can take the responsibility of the logistics of Segment 1 and
Segment 2 events. Let it be setting up the mike & speakers, wi-fi's, chairs,
etc.. we could deal with it. Also any new student volunteer who shows
interest for volunteering and sends a mail to the Bangalore wiki list could
be integrated into this team. If the number increases slightly we can carve
out a small group who will take care of front desk and registration too. So
in this way there will be more student volunteers like us running around on
the event day. Meanwhile you guys can concentrate on the main aspects of the
event.
Let me know what you think on this.
I was unable to join the telecon tday, i shall join tomorrow and provide any
clarifications in case you need it.
Regards,
Srikanta

Hi Everyone
I wanted to inform you about the current geo-targeted banners for India. We
have turned two of them on, last night as you may have noticed. One is the
ten wiki celebration banner as previously scene but now instead of directing
to the ten wiki main page, it goes to the customized India Category page on
ten wiki. The other is the contribute banner, "Help us complete the puzzle
in every Indian language" it directs to a page on Meta intended to link to a
editing tutorial and direct traffic to the Indian language Projects.

Hi,
Thanks for your questions. We're hoping you can attend the birthday
celebrations in Delhi this weekend! I'll actually be in Delhi next
week. It would be good if you have time to meet up for an informal
chat.
Answers to your questions:
So, I would like to know what is the status of your India office?
The most important thing we're working on right now is hiring a
Country Director. Our office will consist of a small team of 3-5
people, so it will be a modest operation. We still plan to open the
office in the next few months.
In addition to the small office the Foundation plans to open, there is
a vibrant community of volunteers, as well as an established Chapter
in Bangalore. The volunteers have organized more than 60 events to
celebrate Wikipedia's 10th anniversary in India. You can find more
information here: http://ten.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page
When are you going to inauguration(if its not already done) the office
and where in India?
We still have not decided on a location.
I would also like to contact the head of your India office.
As I said, we still have not hired a Country Director--the person who
will manage our small team--but Barry Newstead, our Chief Development
Officer, will be in Delhi with me next week.
I will highly appreciate if you could answe me as soon as possible.
I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if there's anything else I
can do for you.
Cheers,
Moka
