Folks,
I have uploaded the photos of Bangalore Wikimeetup 18 to commons
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Bangalore_Meetup_Sep10
Possibly due to long weekend and 2 major festivals , the attendence of this
meetup was relatively low. But the best part was that there were three
first-timers , of the 7 people who attended.. I have decided to follow up
and engage with new people who are coming to the meetup, from now on. I have
asked them to also subscribe to our aliases.
There were 3 presentations
1) "Wikimedia Israel / Hebrew Wikipedia and its activities " - Asaf Bartov
(User:Ijon)
The presentation was done remotely over skype video. Hebrew Wikipedia
crossing 1 lakh articles with just 150-200 active contributors ( with still
maintaining article quality & no blind bot created articles) is a good case
study for the Indian languages to follow. Asaf shared their experiences
with the various outreach activities undertaken by Wikimedia Israel.
2) "Project Management best practices for WikiProjects". - Arjunarao
3) "Wikimedia Chapters and other forms of affiliation" - Achal Prabhala

Hi folks,
This is to inform that Malayalam Wikipedia (ml.wikipedia.org) crossed
14,000 articles.
http://ml.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Statistics
It took only less than 2.5 months from 13K to 14K. This is particularly
important because Malayalam Wikipedia has strict guidelines on the quality
of the new articles being created. Good job !

Govt to rent out computers in rural areas at Rs 15 a day
After the slow pick-up of the $220
One Laptop Per Child Project, and an uncertainty over the $35 laptop
called Sakshat, the government is now experimenting with another
model-to dole out computers on rent to spread IT literacy in the
country.

Hi there
I just wanted to inform everyone that we have decided on Connaught Place as
the venue for the meetup on September 22 at around 5-6 PM with Barry
Newstead from the foundation. Barry will be in town for a short time and
wants an informal get-together with local Wikimedians to get our opinions.
I suggested Connaught Place for its easy connectivity through Metro (I am
hoping that the CWG work would be completed by then). It would probably be
in a coffee shop in the vicinity but the final decision has not been taken.
I will inform everyone once a decision is made as to which one.
I am looking for any feedback before-hand, if anyone has a problem with the
time or the venue, we can change it to a certain degree
to accommodate everyone. Any other questions and concerns in the mean time
can be directed towards me. Please confirm as early as possible if you will
be attending.
Thank you
Salmaan

Subject: [Wmfcc-l] [press] Google 'Health Speaks' for online medical
info in Hindi

Google 'Health Speaks' for online medical info in Hindi
Press Trust of India
http://www.hindustantimes.com/Google-Health-Speaks-for-online-medical-info-…
Internet search giant Google is encouraging volunteers to translate
health-related articles in Hindi
under its initiative to boost the amount of online medical information
in local languages. Google.org
has introduced pilots for its initiative 'Health Speaks' that aims to
increase the online health information
in Hindi, Arabic and Swahili.
The search giant said it has chosen hundreds of health articles, written
in English, from Wikipedia
for their translation. Volunteers who are bilingual in English and
anyone of the vernaculars are being
encouraged to translate the literature with assistance from the Google
Translator Toolkit. Translators
are also supposed to review the articles and make it locally relevant
before publishing it on the
corresponding local language Wikipedia site.
Pilot programmes are supported with a donation incentive, awarding local
charities with funds based
on the number of words volunteers translate, Google said in a statement.
For the first 60 days, Google
will donate 3 US cents (about 45 paise) to the Public Health Foundation
of India, New Delhi, for each
English word translated in Hindi. The maximum donation would $ 50,000.
The Children's Cancer Hospital
Egypt 57357 and the African Medical and Research Foundation would get
the same amount for the pilots
in Arabic and Swahili, respectively.
"Language should not be the barrier that denies millions of people
worldwide the opportunity to improve
their health with valuable health information," Jennifer Haroon, Manager
of Health Initiatives at Google.org, said.
In most parts of the world, quality information that would help people
to improve their health is not available
online in local languages. In 2004, Lancet - a medical journal -
described the lack of access to health information
as a "major barrier to knowledge-based healthcare in developing
countries." The authors then noted "among
currently available technologies, only the Internet has the potential to
deliver universal access to up-to-date
healthcare information."
Currently, professional translation of high quality health content is
expensive and there are difficulties in finding
translators for some non-western languages.

Dear Wikipedians do try Google Trends to see which wikipedia Indians are searching for vis a vis english wikipedia , Seems Hindi and Tamil Wikipedia are doing better on this count.
