Hi Everyone,
I am working for the WIkimedia Foundation for this year's fundraiser. The
Foundation wants to dedicate part of the resources from the fundraising
campaign to seek non-financial contributions from our readers. We are
working on something for the Indian language projects in particular, in line
with the five year plan and the priority of Indian Wikis.
The essence of the contribute campaign is not only to drive up participation
on the projects but also to get our readers to make their very first edit on
Wikipedia.
I have been tasked as part of the fundraising team to support local indian
languages; we have already posted to all relevant Wikipedia VPs seeking
participation and informing them of this year's fundraiser.
We want to work with the community members and provide any support that we
can, I have briefly discussed with Srikanth about supporting the next
Wiki-marathon. If anyone has any ideas, projects that would be conducive to
our common goal, Please feel free to share them.
Regards

Hi Everyone,
I wanted to introduce myself and also use this listserv for recruiting for a study that I am doing to understand the user experience of reading the Wikipedia on the mobile phone and understand the possibilities/feasibilities of using the mobile phone as a platform for editing the Wikipedia.
I am Mani Pande, and I recently joined the Global Development team at Wikipedia to do research that will help Wikipedia grow in the global south. I work closely with other folks in the global development team (Barry, Kul etc) who many of you probably know. I have worked as a researcher for the last 6 years, and have a PhD in Sociology. Before joining Wikipedia, I worked for Institute for the Future, a forecasting research company, based in Palo Alto, CA.
I would like to recruit both Wikipedia readers and editors in India. I am looking to speak with folks who either read the Wikipedia on the phone (at least once a week) or have made some edits (two or more) on the phone in the last six months. I would like to conduct an interview over Skype. The interview would be about an hour. It would touch on the questions listed below.
If you are interested in participating in the study, please email me at mpande(a)wikimedia.org. Or if you believe someone else will be a great fit for this study then please feel forward this email.
Thanks in advance
Mani
Interview Objectives
Find out whether mobile phone can be used as a platform for reading, editing & contributing, to the Wikipedia (English & other Indian regional languages like Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Punjabi, Marathi, Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam etc.)
Research questions:
How is mobile phone being used as a platform for contributing to Wikipedia? What kinds of contributions are users making to the Wikipedia on the mobile phone currently? Editing already existing content, contributing new content, uploading pictures etc. What are the benefits? What are the pain-points? What are the drivers?
How will the role of mobile phone as a platform for contributing content change in the next one year? What will be different about mobile devices and networks in India?
How will the role of mobile phone as a platform for contributing content change in the next five years? What will be different about mobile devices and networks in India?

Hoi,
Mifos is an initiative of the Grameen Foundation that provides a solid
footing for organisations who are involved in micro financing. The aim of
the Grameen foundation is that everyone has access to credit at affordable
rates. The Mifos initiative supports the administration of the microfinance
industry. It is Open Source and it is used in many countries both in Asia
and in Africa.
At translatewiki.net we support Mifos with its internationalisation and its
localisation. A great amount of work has already gone in making this
software ready. As the next release of the software is imminent, we are
looking for people who can help us with localisation in the languages of
Africa, India.
The rally that is needed to make the software ready for use has started and
there are signed books to be won for the people who help us make a
difference.
In my blogpost you find more details and background information.

Please forward this e-mail if you think you know someone who can help make
Mifos relevant for micro finance organisations near you.
Thanks,

In today's Bangalore Mirror 4/11 there is a story on how the Kannada
Sahitya Parishat wants to engage with Kannada Wikipedia on it's strategy
to make internet use in Kannada more vibrant. It's quite a well-written
story, not online as yet. Do you know these folks Hari? If there are
others interested in engaging with them, perhaps we can convene a
meeting with them and help. Cheers,
Achal
