We, members of CSE dept., Govt. Engineering College, Thrissur and DAKF conducted a workshop for CSE students on Malayalam Wikipaedia with the help of Anil with a view to popularize it and attract students to content creation in Malayalam.
This mail is to initiate formulation of a strategy to build content in Malayalam.
We have good students educated enough to do the work, but, lack motivation. Currently, motivating examples are also not present in Campus. Now, all universities have policies for social service as part of UG/PG programs.
Content creation in Malayalam help the society and with chosen topics it definitely become a social service without doubt. So if universities permit to account the time a student spent on these activities as social activity hours, we(faculty) can actually give writing assignments to students. All students doing this will help multiplying content quickly.
Currently some of this social service time is spent in cleaning department premise. Doing content creation may also be added so that there is opportunity for mental exercises.
It is understood that DAKF stand for propelling content creation in Malayalam. So a community movement in this direction can result in all universities implementing this idea. Activities of similar nature useful to societies may also be included.
Ours is primarily an engineering institution and has limitation in providing language translation exercises. Foreign universities, especially for UG/PG courses on languages/history, have assignments creating Wiki pages.
Myself has discussed the idea with Anil and with Sudarsanan Sir and both had the opinion that this may be useful and possible. On that basis, I have some courage to present this idea.
