All,
Sue Gardner, from the WMF, is in our office today, along with a few others (Garfield and Asaf from the WMF). She's keen to meet UK Wikipedians for a drink - is anyone available for drinks in the Old Street area of London this afternoon/evening? If so, drop me an email directly!

If she were actually keen to meet UK Wikipedians, shouldn't she have given us a bit more than a couple of hours notice?
I think she extended her trip by a day, after being here for Jimmy's wedding. Her flight is (very) early tomorrow morning!

That's a bit of a crappy line to take (sorry). "Sommone can't really care to meet people or it would have ben pre-arranged". Quite likely it wasn't expected there would be much chance at all to meet generally, a lot of things like this are last minute because of time constraints or because somethng is resolved quicker than expected.
Did you ask last week "will you have a chance to meet people while over?" If so, you'd have learned it was not expected even a few days ago, that there would be any chance for other socializing because of tight time constraints.

I think it's fairly symptomatic of the London-centricity of many people. What is relatively easy for those living in the City to do is probably a three-hour journey or more each way for those of us who live further afield and needs planning. I simply find it discourteous (sorry) to exclude us provincials, not deliberately, I'm sure, but through lack of forethought.
And if "it was not expected even a few days ago", why do you expect me to be asking about it last week? I don't mind being criticised for many things, but a lack of psychic powers is not one of them.

I knew you were going to say that.
1/ I see. It's terrible that when you have a few hours unexpectedly spare to meet people, one might not use 6 of them travelling to Manchester and back to hold your (negative duration?) social just before waking up bright and early for the (very early) transatlantic flight from the same city where the wedding took place.
Repeated events can move. One-off unscheduled time around a tightly planned event is often "wherever it happens to be". To accuse someone effectively of not giving a shit for others because it happened that they could fit in some social time but not easily in a different part of the country, is still crappy. Just apologize.
2/ A few days ago *is* last week............

Sue can only be in one place at any one time.... Jimbo, of course, can be in more than one place.
Maybe that is where the confusion lies?

P.S. As one of the many pub consultants for WMUK, I was not informed and hence found myself at The Southampton Arms last night. I had a pint of Fellowship from the Redemption brewery....

Oh, stop moaning. There's a reason things happen in London: people live and work there. Things happening in London is not always a grand conspiracy to slight non-Londoners.

More to the point, as a community we do have a lot of events outside London. But London is where we have our office, our largest concentration of members and half our AGMs, so it will get a disproportionate proportion of our meetings. Some of that could easily be fixed, London meetups cost the community nothing apart from the electrons required for a geonotice, and anyone is welcome to organise meetups elsewhere in the country - I think there are several cities that rarely if ever have meetups but which have millions of people within an hour or so's journey. I recently proposed that we shift from alternating the AGM between London and elsewhere to only holding it in London one AGM in three - if anyone is concerned at the proportion of meetups that are in London then that is the sort of practical step we could take. But shifting the office is a bigger job, and wherever the office is we will have spontaneous meetings taking place.

I recall things being remarkably non-London-centric when most of the board didn't live anywhere near it. Media storms were fun when I was the only person on hand to do telly ...

That doesn't really make much difference when it comes to media. It's very easy for me to get to the BBC's MediaCity in Salford Quays, but it's very rare that there's opportunities to be interviewed there. I've been on Radio 5 Live once from their studios in MediaCity, and that's about it. Most relevant media work (particularly TV) still takes place in London.
Thanks, Mike

Asaf posted a message on the wiki a few days ago regarding his availability http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Water_cooler#Visiting_WMUK_next_week. Did you take up his offer?
Like you, I'm already travelling multiple times for WMUK events in the next few weeks - two days worth of training in London this week alone, so I'm naturally grateful to Asaf for having the forethought to present us with an opportunity to meet with him. Even though I was unfortunately unable to make those arrangements, it is some compensation that he bore us in mind.
