So, as we said at the meet up a fortnight ago (eek), we're going to have a meeting dedicated to progressing with Wikimedia UK sometime soon, somewhere quiet that we could work. Barring a pub etc. on grounds of noise, we could meet up in, erm... My house? A private function room? Somewhere else of which someone knows? As to a day, I think a fortnight's time would be a good idea (lest time gets away from us), so Sunday the 9th of October.
Thoughts?

I could probably get the Royal Oak function room for free; on Sundays there are open from 12 noon to 6pm.
The pub is near Borough Tube station. Hence close to London Bridge, with good connections via Thameslink etc.
Sunday afternoon 9th October, from say 3pm?

That sounds excellent. Anyone else have input?

If it is just you and me, then maybe we should meet "chez vous"?!?!

I know it's quite early, but I wanted to put forward the information that I'll be in London in late NOvember. I was able to save significantly on the price of the ticket by flying in on Sunday morning rather than Monday, with the pleasant side-effect of hopefully having an opportunity for a Sunday afternoon meetup.
This will be: 27 November
I do not yet have a hotel reservation, but it is my usual custom to stay at a small hotel near Victoria Station. I'm reasonably functional in London in terms of finding my way around, despite having the handicap of only speaking a foreign language (as Jack and Naree would have it ;-)).

A little more than just a few individuals...

P.S. So you will miss Thanksgiving (here!) by three days?
:-(
Northern Line still has problems. Hence, travel to London Bridge and a short walk. Go South from London Bridge towards Borough. Once you see the Borough Tube Station, take a left and go past St George The Martyr. The pub is two blocks away at the junction of Tabard Street and Nebraska Street.

Four Wikipedians attended the whole meeting (which lasted until 5:50pm).
A fifth WIkipedian (Stefan) was present for part of the meeting.
Brief notes: charity status agreed, company limited by guarantee agreed. The articles of association should be brief and taken from the Charities Commission Model which would vastly improve the transition to charity status. The "by laws" from other countries would act as a reference point, and included in part.
Next meeting: propsoed to meet on Sunday, 27th November 2005 at the same venue. Lunch is available at the pub. Date chosen since Jimbo will be in town and to focus ourselves on a few (tenable) goals.
It is noted that London is not the UK. Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham and Reading are also in the UK:-)

In follow-up to this, we agreed to have an IRC meeting about this, with hopefully a larger turn-out, this coming Sunday evening (the 16th of October), starting at 18:00 BST, I would suggest, in #wikimedia-uk on Freenode. Everyone interested is invited, of course.

Sorry couldn't make meeting yesterday (second Sundays can be a problem - same as previous meeting). I'll try for the Novermber meeting but should be online on the 16th anyway ...

I have just spoken to the Charities Commission. I gave a general picture of what we wanted and was informed that all our ideas are sound.
And a very clear description of what we might do is set down here:
http://www.duport.co.uk/company-formation/charity-companies.htm
And the aims and objectives:
http://www.duport.co.uk/company-formation/charity-companies-aims.htm
This company charges 135 pounds for the service.
**** You must provide the objects (aims) of your organisation (Our team can help with this, but first look at our examples)
You must state what will be done with any excess earnings
A minimum of 3 Officers including: 3 or more Trustees (Directors) 1 Secretary (who may be one of the Trustees) (service available) Registered Office in the UK (service available)
****
Somes notes following my phone call to Charities Commission.
1) We should form a company limited by guarantee: that can be bought off the shelf for about 100 quid. Note that we would have to have the annual account audited. It the first few years the return would be be the cut down version.
2) That company should show that it has (or will have) an income of 1,000 per annum or more. Promissory notes are accepted on the basis that the donors are going to pay once charitable status is given.
3) The money can come from abroad.
4) The company must demonstrate that Trustees are mainly based in England and Wales
5) The company must show evidence of bank account and registration at Companies House, and "articles of association". The Articles should be based on the models from the website, GD1 in particular.
6) The 1,000 figure is the minimum. Charities that turnover (have income?) between 1,000 and 10,000 are classed as small charities.
That's about it. I am happy to ring back. Also, if anybody else wants to ring up and ask questions, that's fine, since the staff seem to happy to help.
***
In terms of Company Law, if the name is either of:
1) Wikimedia UK Ltd
2) Wikimedia UK Limited
with "UK" in the name, the company would have to show the relationship to a non-UK parent or sister companies.
