I'm looking at the feasibility of setting up a temporary office at Newspeak House in London for the next 6 weeks for people coming together to work on tech & democracy projects.
It might make sense to do a politics/elections edit-a-thon in the space at some point(s) in this period. Any interest?

If you ran it w/c 5th June I can be there! If not, happy to assist remotely and promote :)
PS I've already stalked all the democracy club stuff happening - there's some good work going on.

I think that sounds like a great idea/offer Ed - are you thinking along similar lines to the Full Fact event? I wonder if there would be mileage in partnering up with them again? Lucy

In 2015 we had an editathon on the night of the election https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXuN94_40fQ, updating articles as results came in. Might be a model worth repeating, as might something along the line of the Full Fact editathon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_-lByiEINw from last year.

I think it'd be good to have the GE candidates as they're announced as well, maybe we can do something around that?
Take a look at this, by the way - bit.ly/GE2017TechInitiatives - I am sure wikipedians can improve this resource, or use it to improve wikipedia etc.
I won't be doing anything pro-active on the edit-a-thon front but I will offer the space and support anyone organising - If anyone decides they want to lead on this, please keep me updated. All you need to do is promote, really.

For their own pages, sure, but they can be put in other places (constituencies?), and probably in Wikidata too.

I'm not sure about that Ed. I've encountered this issue before and the notability criteria for politicians is quite clear that they have to be elected to merit a page, I believe. I would assume the same applies for Wikidata?

Candidates are not eligible for their own pages, but, for example, they could be put on pages like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tower_Hamlets_(UK_Parliament_constituency)
Wikidata, not sure, but tends to be much more lax about these kind of things.

How are we with getting good free images of MPs? Or at least of candidates. We have some terrible snapshots of UK politicians ... anyone who's a party member who could talk to their party about getting good photos, or freeing up original photos?

How does it go if you contact their people and say "I'm from Wikipedia, mind if I bring some big glass to xxx meetup, got a good spot I can stand?" I figure that's an ideal situation to use our good name. And certainly I can't see candidates who aren't yet MPs saying no.

Why? Surely they are all open to being photographed? And why "serious gear"? Just an iPhone would do?
I rarely take any sort of portrait photograph but the candidate are out there so be seen (and heard).
Gordo
Much is down to the operator, but better cameras can take better pictures, especially in Low light conditions.
If you take David Gerard's advice and introduce yourself as from Wikipedia , any political party with an ounce of commonsense will usher you to the front and give you a position where you can take a good photo.

Why? Surely they are all open to being photographed? And why "serious gear"? Just an iPhone would do?
I rarely take any sort of portrait photograph but the candidate are out there so be seen (and heard).

I've tweeted from the WMUK account encouraging people to take photos of candidates.

If you take David Gerard's advice and introduce yourself as from Wikipedia , any political party with an ounce of commonsense will usher you to the front and give you a position where you can take a good photo.

Do we have anyone offering to be a trainer on this yet? We're not far away from the 7th, so if we are going to organise I need someone to volunteer for this pretty soon.

I'd be interested in doing something a week or two after the election when the dust is starting to settle. By that time we should be able to evaluate the results and the new cabinet/ministerial appointments should be known and there'll be updates needed to various Wikipedia articles and probably biographies needing expansion.
I can't make the 7th. Election night would be fun, but as others have pointed out there's a risk of losing momentum before there are any significant edits needed.

Right, so who's interested in this election night editathon then? I've said I'll run it and we're a week away. Who's in?

Next, we need a lead volunteer. Would anybody like to put themselves forward for that?

Candidates are not eligible for their own pages, but, for example, they could be put on pages like this: https://en.wikipedia.org /wiki/Tower_Hamlets_(UK_Parliament_constituency)
Wikidata, not sure, but tends to be much more lax about these kind of things.

I'm not sure about that Ed. I've encountered this issue before and the notability criteria for politicians is quite clear that they have to be elected to merit a page, I believe. I would assume the same applies for Wikidata?

For their own pages, sure, but they can be put in other places (constituencies?), and probably in Wikidata too.
