Thinking back to the editathon we ran at the time of the last election, there was quite a long wait until much in the way of new MPs were elected, and by that time people were tired and/or enthusiasm had waned.
There will be a number of candidates for safe seats for whom we can start draft pages in anticipation of their election being announced later that evening/morning. If we could identify such candidates ahead of time, then editors would have something worthwhile to do whilst we await the actual constituency results.
By way of example, anticipating a very likely Labour victory in the 2016 Tooting by-election after Sadiq Khan stood down to become mayor, I started an article on the Labour candidate: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosena_Allin-Khan
An AfD was started the next day, and the article was deleted: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Rosena_Allin-K...
After she won, the article was reinstated. If I had just done that article as a draft, there would have been no need for an AfD.

What about if we simply did a politics themed editathon after the election when the results had come in and we had something to work with?

I think there are three options, 1) an editathon in the run up to the election, possibly with Full Fact, to try to ensure Wikipedia contains accurate information about the main Parties, key politicians etc, 2) An editathon on the day/night of the election - although I appreciate Ed's point about the practicalities of that given that results come in overnight, or 3) an event following the election when we will have the results to work with. I do wonder if people might have a bit of election fatigue afterwards? Or perhaps that's just me and Brenda. If there are any trainers/volunteers who are particularly interested, do let us know. All best, Lucy

I would not be able to be in London but may contribute from home as results come in – more likely come online early the following day.
I would also agree that this should be onwiki to reach a wider audience. There is already some discussion about when “dissolution” actually occurs (1 minute past midnight on the night of 3 May) and the edits needed to MPs articles at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Politics_of_the_Uni...

Hi all,
I would like to make several suggestions:
1. Checkout the General Election 2015 Editathon wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetups/UK/General_Election_2015_Editathon : the aim was clearly stated: "We will endeavour to ensure that Wikipedia is up to date with the UK General Election https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UK_general_election_2015 results by the morning of 8th May." We had a link up with cy-wiki. There is a short video about the event and we and sponsorship from Cybersalon and used the basement in Development House. This worked well, even though we did have the Green Party try and persuade us to move somewhere else, somewhat ineffectively. If such an arrangement is to be repeated, the room should be booked soon, and a member of staff identified who would be happy to be present for the night. I did this in 2015, and I must admit it was great fun: a sociable way to stay up all night on election night and to contribute towards the sum of "the sum of all human knowledge"! There is little point in seeing it as a "training event" as those present were generally all experienced editors. But we did basically succeed with our aim, even if early birds coming on line the next morning also made an important contribution. I would be interested in being involved ifsomeone could arrange a venue and some support re snacks pizza etc. 2. As regards any event before hand, it would seem useful to check the timetable https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom_general_election,_2017#Timetable . As 11 may is the deadline for the delivery of candidate nomination papers, it would make sense to have any event after this. 3. We should keep in touch with people who already have built up experience working on UK elections. I know I found Bondegezou https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Bondegezou very helpful back in 2015. 4. At the risk of sounding hopelessly old-fashioned, it would seem to me be a good idea to move as much of this discussion onto Wikipedia itself as possible, to see how any event which is organised can best fit in with the existing activities of the community.
all the best,
Fabian Tompsett,
aka Leutha

As it happens I have organised an event at Newspeak House to do this the following day, if anyone's keen:
Crowdsourcing Election Candidates Party, 12th May 2017 https://democracyclub.org.uk/blog/2017/04/07/four-weeks-and-3165-pdfs-go/ Democracy Club https://www.nwspk.com/democracyclub.org.uk
On the 11th of May, each councils will release a document called a Statements of Persons Nominated, which details the candidates for the upcoming election. We need to manually enter this information into a database so that more useful things can be done with it. Come and help! https://www.nwspk.com/events?id=144#event-144

A database? Like, say, Wikidata? ;)
Chris
For a flat-file database that's available online to a limited number of people, a spreadsheet is perfectly adequate. It's probably heresy, but Google docs would work.
If we want a simple, free-form, flat database that is part of the Wikimedia projects, the Data: namespace on Commons is much easier to set up a database on than trying to shoehorn random data into Wikidata.

Yes, I'm sure that's the right kind of solution for on the day and most of the potential use cases.
I'd imagine that all of the data gathered would be within scope for Wikidata, though I'm not sure whether Wikidata yet has good structures to record constituency-level election data. It would be great if it did.
Chris
Is the feeling that the community would rather do an election night event than one on the 26/27th? I'm happy to facilitate either and I'm sure we could use Newspeak House.

The usual early night stuff is sort out the smaller parties that don't have articles and improve the ones that do.
Has there been any decision about whether we will do an event on the evening of the election, before or after? I've been away but if you guys have decided on something, we can start organising.

Thanks for your timely reminder. From previous postings, Fabian and I (at least) would be up for an election night editathon.
As I've mentioned before, there are 29 MPs not standing again, so based on the 2015 constituency results and the 10pm exit polls, we can start Draft: pages for probable new MPs, ready to go live when the actual constituency results come in.

As I've mentioned before, there are 29 MPs not standing again, so based on the 2015 constituency results and the 10pm exit polls, we can start Draft: pages for probable new MPs, ready to go live when the actual constituency results come in.

I attended the same event as Fabian, and agree with all his comments. It was a fun night, and we could do even better this time..
We already have 25 MPs not standing again, so that's up to 25 new bios we'll need: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom_general_election,_2017#Members_...
Based on the 2015 results plus the exit polls, we should have a very good idea who will win in each of those seats, and can start the draft pages accordingly, ready to go live as soon as the individual results are in. Have we ever had an editathon where we started more than 25 articles? 25 is plenty.
Along with Fabian, I'd be happy to be a trainer on the night, if any training is needed.

Hi all,
I would like to make several suggestions:
- Checkout the General Election 2015 Editathon wikipedia page
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetups/UK/General_Election_2015_Editathon: the aim was clearly stated: "We will endeavour to ensure that Wikipedia is up to date with the UK General Election https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UK_general_election_2015 results by the morning of 8th May." We had a link up with cy-wiki. I did this in 2015, and I must admit it was great fun: a sociable way to stay up all night on election night and to contribute towards the sum of "the *sum of all* human *knowledge"! *There is little point in seeing it as a "training event" as those present were generally all experienced editors. But we did basically succeed with our aim, even if early birds coming on line the next morning also made an important contribution. I would be interested in being involved ifsomeone could arrange a venue and some support re snacks pizza etc. 2. As regards any event before hand, it would seem useful to check the timetable https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom_general_election,_2017#Timetable. As 11 may is the deadline for the delivery of candidate nomination papers, it would make sense to have any event after this. 3. We should keep in touch with people who already have built up experience working on UK elections. I know I found Bondegezou https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Bondegezou very helpful back in 2015. 4. At the risk of sounding hopelessly old-fashioned, it would seem to me be a good idea to move as much of this discussion onto Wikipedia itself as possible, to see how any event which is organised can best fit in with the existing activities of the community.
all the best,
Fabian Tompsett,
aka Leutha
