I am presently unable to view the WMUK website because the security certificate expired in the early hours of this morning:
wikimedia.org.uk uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate expired on 31/08/14 00:59. The current time is 31/08/14 10:02. (Error code: sec_error_expired_certificate)
This needs to be fixed as soon as possible. Note it also means I can't get to the bugzilla to report it there.

Hi guys
There was a problem with the payment for the certificate renewal. We are now waiting for the documents to be validated before a new certificate is issued.
Kat is working on this. And as soon as a certificate is issued I will get it installed.
Sorry for the inconvenience.

Good afternoon everyone.
Indeed - I spend pretty much all of yesterday exchanging emails with our provider to fix this and made staff aware in advance of the issue with the intention to update you all this morning if it couldn't be resolved.
The issue is they require authorisation documents every time you renew the domain - I re-provided the same ones used in 2013 and this year the customer service rep was unable to extract them or accept them. I should add that, for reasons best known to themselves, the whole thing has to be done by fax (you read that correctly)
Currently I cannot provide the authorization documents in a format that staff member can read and he has referred the matter to a 'specialist' and I should receive a reply tomorrow
Some questions that may occur:
Why didn't you just renew well in advance?
We did - we actually transferred payment on 1st August. However the two factors that were unclear was a) Foreign bank payments can take 4 - 6 weeks to clear and b) that the process of authorisation would requires supporting documentation again
Why didn't you anticipate the issue with authorisation documentation not being accepted?
Simply - I wasn't briefed that supporting documentation would be needed again (it is identical to last year) merely that DNS validation would be required (a two minute job we have done). The exact same documentation was approved last year. This year we had a different individual to work with.
What happens now?
Either tomorrow we attempt for a sixth time to provide a copy of the documentation they deem legible based on a hard copy scan or their specialist authorisies the renewal based on what we have provided
I will also be complaining because the process has been tremendously difficult.
What happens until then?
I'm afraid I'm powerless to effect any change until then - their reps are not replying to me directly, there is no number to chase, and I cannot access the documentation in the office until then. This means for a day at least (today) if you need to access the site you will need to add a security exception.
Apologies for the inconvenience caused and lack of advance warning - I will notify you tomorrow with progress.

For information. All the Wikimedia UK websites are unreachable today. If you try you get a message warning you that the site is not secure.
‘Unacceptable’ does not begin to describe the situation. Also, I have no idea why Katherine is dealing with this, as she is not supposed to be handling IT stuff any more.

Unfortunately she is the only one with the documents and experience etc as she did this last year. Its not something I or Emmanuel can do as it relates to documentation of the charity as a company etc. (Ie not a technical matter per se).
Often a firm will issue a stop gap certificate but in this case it looks like Gandi don't.
Cheers, Tom

Do we needs https on the home page? Could we not post an http version, with a more about the temporary hiccup, and eta for resumption of service?
The http URL currently redirects to https.
I’ve disabled Forced SSL on the home-page. However, because it’s wordpress :( it is trying to load assets over https still; and I am not going to fiddle with that….
The wiki functions properly, however: http://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Main_Page

Would temporarily redirecting past the new homepage to wiki be a good idea?

Not a bad idea. However, I think a decision on that needs to come from staff.
And, also, Emmanuel might need to look at how to do it because it’s his config that manages the current site layout and I don’t want to break it :D

Sounds like that might be due to: WP admin panel -> 'Settings' -> 'General' -> 'WordPress Address (URL)' and 'Site Address (URL)' Change them to 'http' rather than 'https' for now. (I don't think // works in these fields)?
(This is one reason why it's better to always enable *both* http and https rather than forcing one option...)
Thanks, Mike

Morning all,
Can I suggest we hang on until a planned phone call with Tom this afternoon when I will make a decision about re-directs, after consultation with Stevie? I ask because I may have resolved the issue sooner and so don't want to have to unpick changes in a few hours time.
Thank you

Afternoon List,
I’m happy to say that within the last half hour we were issued the certificate and I have installed it!
As of now, services should be fully restored - if you’re seeing issues try clearing your cache or restarting your browser to remove the existing cached certificate. Cheers,
Tom
