hi,
when is the date where the domains qrpedia, and qrwp are transferred?
rupert.
Any minute now - just dealing with the details.

Given that the domain is due to expire 13-Mar-2013 are you ready to extend it?
This appears to be pressing. Is anything in hand?

I believe that there is a cooling off period, when transfer or a new domain registration is forbidden.

Not exactly.
In any case lets start with the basics. Have the domains been transferred yet?
The domains have not been transferred yet. You can find out when they are with the whois request. I think the "any minute" quote above was a tadge optimistic. A contract has to be written for one and that typically takes weeks if it doesn't involve volunteers and meetings.

Seriously? This is taking far too long and appears to be dragged out unnecessarily. Please could you explain what has been done since the announcement almost a whole month ago? Chris/Jon if you could give some details about what WMUK has done and Roger what have you done on your end to help facilitate the transfer, that would be very much appreciated.

Yeah no.
You might want to consider your audience. People on this list are not exactly unfamiliar with concept of domain transfers and a worrying number of them also have a working knowledge of contract and gift law. So yeah your statement is blatantly false on both fronts.
Look back before the Garfield Byrd we accepted certain claims because we understood that they performed a useful diplomatic function but at this point you are just insulting out intelligence. Given that you've given up trying to tell worthwhile lines why not try some honesty. What do you and possibly Terence Eden want?
Money? How much? No I'm serious if you want money just give a figure and I'll see what I can do.
Credit? I'd recommend the Affero General Public License v3
Control? At this point you are probably going to have to accept that isn't going to happen.
Now be honest with us or at least come up with an explanation that doesn't insult our collective intelligence.
Weeks? the registration on qrpedia.org expires in 5 days. Just let it expire and let WMUK pick up the domain.

3 days now (weekend? you are working to a deadline now). And usually I wouldn't feel the need to point this out but the above was a joke. If you allow the domain to expire it will be nabbed a squatter which since there is no quick way to change QR codes will be a bit of a problem. As I said I wouldn't usually feel the need to point this out but well if we are to accept statements on this matter at face value we have to assume a massive level of technical incompetence.

qrpedia.org appears to have been renewed for a year - its expiry date is now 13-Mar-2014. Many thanks to Terence and Roger for renewing it.
I've been pushing as much as I can for a while now on the WMUK side of things to get the domains transferred to WMUK asap. There's nothing technical that prevents that from taking place. However, I understand that there are unfortunately still some legal issues to work through, in particular relating to privacy, before the transfer can happen.
Thanks, Mike

Again not true. Privacy issues only come up if you are actually collecting any data. Stop collecting data and no more privacy issues.

The question was how "how long is this going to take" ..... I have estimated weeks. It appears I was wrong to offer this estimate. So "any minute now" must be correct then.
Well that was my last update. "Thank you (not)" for the reception of information honestly offered. The tech committee debated the transfer of the domains and many offering their wisdom now could have attended that meeting and found out what the problems were. You could have asked questions .... and got answers.
There is no real privacy issue. Do we have people who were not at that tech meeting running around and debating "the privacy issue" ..... yes. Do they know what they are talking about? .... ???. Are they causing delays .... yes. Hence my comment about volunteers and meetings.
Sharing your exasperation here is not going to help. Implyng that this has anything to do with money is very unhelpful and belittles all of us. .... and I do mean all of us. If you are not willing to AGF then I can obviously offer no reply that will satisfy you.
Now if I or Terence had control it would be transferred already, but we don't. We have made three agreements so far with the board or their representatives. You may notice that there are few informative postings here from board or staff. They are obviously wiser than me. If anyone wants to write to me in a civil tone and agf then I'd be happy to talk to them.
Oh and thanks to Mike who presumably took my advice and did a WHOIS enquiry rather than posting here. Thank you particularly Mike for offering thanks for renewing the domain. Civility and good faith are appreciated.

It is perfectly understandable that people on this list are curious to know what is happening with QRpedia and its transfer to Wikimedia UK. I'll do my best to clarify as much as I am able.
First of all it is not about money or payments. Roger and Terence have been absolutely clear about this from the start – there is no financial consideration and the transfer of ownership is a donation to Wikimedia UK and the community from Terence and Roger. The delays have been many over the last eighteen months but we are almost there.
This has not been a simple process and we had to make sure we got it right. The heads of agreement that we signed with Roger in February was an expression of mutual trust and a desire to make the QRpedia platform available to the whole world and sustainable to those already using it. The recent statement of the Wikimedia Foundation about “wiki towns” ( http://blog.wikimedia.org/2013/03/08/wmf-trademark-practices-for-qr-codes-an...) is a step forward in making the availability greater.
So what are the delays?
Firstly, holding our hands up here, we have been relying on pro-bono legal advice to do most of the work in getting the full arrangements in place. There have been some delays owing to the lawyer concerned having a rush of his paid work. We have been holding off saying more until that was signed. It is important for everyone concerned, particularly the charity, that we get this right.
Secondly - and this scares anyone who understands such things, which doesn't include me - there is a issue concerning a possible patent troll that needs to be resolved as it could be a risk to the charity. The concerns arising here are complicated - it's possible that Saad may be able to say more when he gets a chance - and they do need to be properly examined. To complete the transfer before doing this I believe would be negligent.
The technical issues have been addressed so we are ready to move forwards on that side of things. There is an concern that has been raised about whether the use and storage of information to produce the statistics at http://qrpedia.org/stats.php is fully compliant with EU privacy legislation. We're seeking advice on whether this is an issue that requires a change in the current use of data, but it is expected that agreeing a privacy policy and updating our data registration will be enough. Our technical consultants are confident they can implement whatever is needed, if required.
I hope we will have more news to report soon. I appreciate everyone wants to see the transfer finalised - myself as much as anyone, considering the amount of time I've invested in this - but I hope you'll agree that it is worth the wait in order to be certain that the transfer is done properly.

I'm glad all the details will be diligently handled. I know I always expect things to take 50% longer than I expect. I've still usually underestimated the time needed.
Good luck with all the details.

In the EU under UK loser pays law? Thats novel.

So just turn it off. Worrying about such things is a matter for a later date.
So two questionable reasons (getting a lawyer involved in a low value transfer and a problem that can be delt with by switching a non critical system off) and one that may be valid but certainly unusual.
Geni; it *is* frustrating that the domains have not been transferred, let alone the hosting.
However, it's not surprising that the charity is taking its time over some of these issues given recent events. I encourage you to join one of the Tech Committee meetings because you'd get a much better feel for the situation than via email. Or even one of the tech contractor update meetings (which I presume have much the same openness as board meetings, or at least hope so!), where I am sure you would be welcome.
I have made the same point as yourself r.e. the patent issue; but unless I am much mistaken neither of us are lawyers, so it is best to take both of our views with a pinch of salt :D
