Hello this is Deryck who founded CUWPS just over a year ago.
Most Cambridge University societies exist legally as subsidiary groups of
Cambridge University Students' Union (or, for the big ones, as an
independent legal person), but not CUWPS. My successors did get perplexed
when I chose not to officially "register" CUWPS to the Cambridge University
Societies Syndicate.
If a legal status must be asserted, CUWPS is officially a subsidiary group
of WMUK without its own legal person. The main reason, that I chose to make
CUWPS (nominally) a subsidiary of WMUK rather than CUSU, is that I don't
need to manage a separate budget and accounts. Easier trademark use is also
a minor consideration.

Thank you.
Which part of the trademark policy covers this? My own reading was
from == Things You Can Do, a Summary ==, which does not give any
examples related to third parties such as student societies (only
second parties, the chapters themselves).

Hello everyone,
We've looked in to this a bit more deeply, and as long as the student
society
is associated (or affiliated) with Wikimedia UK and isn't selling
any products then there's no need to seek permission to use the marks. The
Trademark Policy at
http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Trademark_policyis the key
document here and is quite clear on this, thankfully.
We're on good terms with the WMF, so if there are any trademark issues
that
the WMF contacts a student group about, try and let us know, and we
can get in touch with the WMF during work hours and smooth over any
difficulties.
I hope this is useful,
Stevie

discuss trademarking with the WMF? If so, how did you approach this? Are
there any apposite lessons you might be able to share?
Anything that was done would have been by
Deryck Chan.
