Celebration Wiknic - In person opportunities during Wikimania UK

Dear all I am sharing this information, it is still being developed/ refined and welcome your thoughts, feedback and offers to host events! During Wikimania 2021 <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2021> we are looking to facilitate in-person meet ups, based on Wiknics <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wiknic>. These would be an opportunity to: - Bring our community together at a series of friendly picnic events. - A relaxed opportunity for community members & families, and those new to the community to come together and celebrate Wiki at 20/ Wikimania and get to know each other. We are in the process of confirming a couple of events, with an open invitation to you to host and arrange a Wiknic across the 5 days of Wikimania 2021 <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2021>. To support and facilitate Wiknics, Wikimedia UK will deliver: - Hosting guidance - Promotional material templates - Event souvenirs - Grants for refreshments. To even contemplate in person activity, I have completed the Foundation Risk Assessment. Of course if any local or national Covid-19 guidance changes and means in-person events cannot go ahead we will support people to move their Wiknic online. 72 hour Wikipedia Editathon for European Researchers' Night (24-26 September)

Hi all! The Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility Network for Open Knowledge (IDEA Network for short!) is based at the University of St Andrews. It aims to make Wikipedia a more inclusive, diverse, equitable, and accessible place for all forms of knowledge. From midnight on Thursday 23rd September to midnight on Sunday 26th September, we will be running a 72 hour EU wide Wikipedia Editathon. This is all part of EXPLORATHON, Scotland's contribution to European Researchers' Night. In order to be in good shape for the Editathon, we are offering this series of editing training session (you only need to attend one!). It is open to all researchers and anyone with an interest in improving the world's largest encyclopedia! As this is a Europe-wide event, each training session is targeted at a particular country, but feel free to book into a session that works for you and your diary. During this training session, we will primarily be focusing on areas of Wikipedia with underestimated individuals, namely Women in Red for different disciplines, as well as cross-translating between Wikis, and adding images to the Wiki Loves Monuments competition. Hello all, We at The Devil's Porridge Museum have been running our Miracle Worker Research Project for the last couple of months, working with remote volunteers to uncover the untold histories of munitions workers at HM Factory Gretna during WW1. We now want to put this research on Wikipedia. To do this we are hosting three Wikithons in September, October and November this year. UK Wikimedian of the Year Awards

Hello everyone, At the AGM on Saturday we announced the winners of the 2021 UK Wikimedian of the Year Awards. *UK Wikimedian of the Year* *Cobra 3000* won the award for their efforts supporting the Scots Wikipedia. They have been a key part of the wiki, organising editathons which not only improved content but fostered a community of editors working together. Having people within a community who can step up and organise is invaluable, and those efforts mean that Scots Wikipedia is improving ever *Honourable Mention* goes to *Ian Watt* who is a tremendously active volunteer and advocate for open knowledge, working with Commons, Wikidata, and Wikipedia. Over the last year he has run public-facing workshops and editathons, and he is hosting and supervising an Edinburgh University post-grad student running a mass transcription of the Register of Returned Criminals (1869-1939). *Up-and-Coming Wikimedia of the Year* Awarded jointly to *Abd Alsattar Ardati* and *Lucy Moore*. Abd is one of Wikimedia UK's accredited trainers and has been proactive in helping his university engage with Wikimedia; his efforts have helped WMUK adapted to the methodology of online training. Lucy is another excellent advocate for Wikimedia - she has organised events at her place of work and encourages people in the museum and archaeology sectors to work with Wikimedia; she is also an active editor and writes articles addressing Wikipedia's content imbalances. *Partnership of the Year* *London College of Communication* won the award for the Decolonising Wikipedia Network was set up in 2020 involving students and staff to improve Wikipedia's coverage of under-represented topics. The Student Changemakers (who had a prominent role in leading the decolonisation efforts) were powerful advocates for the project and presented to staff and fellow students. The successful project will expand over the next academic year to include the whole of University of Arts, London, of which LCC is a part. *Honourable Mention* goes to the *Scotland, Slavery and Black History project at the University of Edinburgh*. History students were invited to improve public knowledge of Scotland’s Black history, and to help make Scotland’s deep connections to Atlantic slavery better understood. They have provided videos on their reflections on this work to local Edinburgh secondary schools who are also interested in Dundas and improving black history on Wikipedia. Result of yesterday's AGM

Dear all Many thanks to those of you who attended Wikimedia UK's online AGM yesterday. At the meeting, Nick Poole also announced that following his departure from the board (at the end of the meeting, which marked six years since he was elected as a trustee), Lorna Campbell would be stepping in as Interim Chair until October. Nick also welcomed our new co-opted trustee and Chair Elect, Monisha Shah <https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Board#Monisha_Shah> (who introduced herself to the meeting). The four resolutions proposed by the board were unanimously supported. Global block importer

Hi all, I've just tried to edit the WMUK wiki to add a few internal links to the 2020 AGM minutes but saw that I was blocked due to a block imported by the global block importer. I had logged in. On further investigation I realised that there's a WM global softblock on my IP range, but the WMUK wiki imported it as a hardblock. Can this be adjusted? --Deryck

Dear all The Wikimedia UK staff team and trustees are looking forward to welcoming you to our Community Day and Annual General Meeting this Saturday 10th July. The event starts at 11am and will finish at 3.30pm with the announcement of our newly elected trustees. We are particularly looking forward to hearing the designer and entrepreneur George Oates in conversation with our outgoing Chair of Trustees, Nick Poole. George has a long career at the intersection of culture, technology and open, and created Flickr Commons in 2008 to share hidden treasures from the world's public photography archives. Nick Poole has built an international profile as a cultural sector leader and advocate for open knowledge, and is currently Chief Executive of CILIP, the UK’s library and information association, as well as the Chair of Trustees at Wikimedia UK. Nick and George will be exploring the themes of open knowledge, community building, culture and scale, drawing on their past and current experiences and responding to questions from the online audience to ensure a lively and thought-provoking discussion. The day will also include the following lightning talks: Lorna Campbell on the representation of HIV/AIDS activism on Wikipedia Jason Evans on the National Library of Wales Places of Wales project Dr Martin Poulter and Waqas Ahmed on their visual arts bias research Dr Kirsty Ross on the IDEA Network at the University of St Andrews Nominations for 2021’s *Wikimedian and UK Partnership of the Year*, which will be presented on the day, close on Wednesday 7th July.
