That it's a non-commercial licence is really disappointing, but that's
still a little better than nothing…

The British Museum has revamped its online collections database, making
over 1.9 million photos of its collection available for free online under a
Creative Commons license.
Under the new agreement the majority of the 1.9 million images are being
made available for anyone to use for free under a Creative Commons 4.0
license <https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/>. Users no
longer need to register to use these photographs, and can now download them
directly from the British Museum.
Under the terms of the Creative Commons license, you are free to share and
adapt the images for non-commercial use, but must include a credit to the
British Museum.

Hi all,
Since in-person meetups aren't an option at the moment, I've started a
discussion about taking meetups online:

Dear all
Firstly, I hope everyone is keeping safe and well.
Secondly, with apologies for the delay in this announcement, I'm writing to
let you know that the Wikimedia UK board of trustees appointed *Nick Poole*
as its new Chair at the last board meeting. Many of you will know Nick
already as he has been on the board since July 2015, and I'm delighted he
has stepped into this role given his extensive relevant skills and
experience.
Sadly, this has come about as another long standing trustee, and Chair of
the Board for nearly three years - *Josie Fraser *- has had to stand down
from the board due to other commitments. Again, many of you will know
Josie, and will understand how sorry we are to lose her from the board. I'd
like to take this opportunity to thank Josie for her huge contribution to
the work of the charity since 2015, and wish her all the very best in her
role as Head of Digital Policy at National Lottery Heritage Fund.
There is a blog post about the change here
<https://blog.wikimedia.org.uk/2020/04/nick-poole-chair/>.
With best wishes
Lucy

Wikimedia UK and Wikimedia Medicine are creating a joint initiative to help
tackle the issues around information about Covid-19 on Wikipedia, and we
need your help.
There are three "top-level" articles:
- The pandemic:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019%E2%80%9320_coronavirus_pandemic
- The condition: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coronavirus_disease_2019
- The virus:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Severe_acute_respiratory_syndrome_coronavirus…
as well as over 750 related articles. These related articles are where we
want to concentrate our support efforts. Coverage changes very rapidly and
there is considerable concern about ensuring that the information provided
is factual and accurate, as well as up-to-date.
There are many dedicated editors involved in WikiProject Medicine and the
recently created WikiProject COVID-19, but the task of keeping myths,
misinformation and poorly-sourced content out of the large number of
articles is huge.
We are therefore asking our regular editors in the UK to do what you do
best. We need help fact-checking and editing the Covid-19 articles. Whether
you feel able to spare fifteen minutes from your regular editing, or bold
enough to make it a regular task, every bit helps.
We have a wiki page to coordinate efforts, share resources, and have
discussion:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_COVID-19/WMUK-WPMEDF_Jo…
So please add it to your watchlist.
One starting point is
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:2019%E2%80%9320_coronavirus_pandemic
from
where you can find something that interests you. Just picking an article,
reading its references, and correcting text that needs it would help. As a
useful extra step (though hardly compulsory) once you’ve gone over an
article it would be useful to add a note in this section:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_COVID-19/WMUK-WPMEDF_Jo…
If anybody needs familiarity with the sourcing standards for medical
articles, take a look at
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Identifying_reliable_sources_(medic…
-
although most of the content will only need to meet the usual standards for
sourcing that you're used to.

Here's an announcement that The National Archives posted on Facebook
on 1 April (at 2;22pm, so its not an April Fool's joke!):
"We’re pleased to confirm that we will be giving everyone free access
to our digitised collections very soon, but it’s taking our amazing
digital team a bit of time to make it happen.
"They’re facing similar challenges to the rest of the world with
regard to connecting to our various technical systems while working
from home, and many of them are also juggling childcare duties. Stay
tuned for an update soon!
"EDIT: To clarify, we’re referring to digitised collections that are
available on our website (and usually chargeable) – at this stage,
this doesn’t extend to our collections on other sites."
