Training of stewards has started for Pride (6 July) and I was
wondering if WMUK will register a list of photographers for passes
again this year? Media info is at
https://prideinlondon.org/media-centre. As there are 580 organizations
and several centers to the event, getting varied coverage in photo and
video on Wikimedia Commons would take several photographers.
I went along to steward training last week, if anyone would like to
volunteer for one of the support roles, you can find out more at
https://prideinlondon.org. The event needs 1,000 stewards, with an
expected viewing public of a million during the day.
Thanks,
Fae

Dear all
This morning, emails have been sent to all current members of Wikimedia UK
regarding our upcoming AGM, which will take place on Saturday 13th July 2019
at the Watershed <https://www.watershed.co.uk/about-us> on the riverside in
Bristol. This is an important annual opportunity for members and other
stakeholders to meet staff and trustees of the charity, network with other
Wikimedians, find out more about our work and have your say in the way the
charity is run and who is on the board - so please put the date in your
diary and sign up here
<https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/wikimedia-uk-2019-agm-tickets-62303110280>.
Volunteers who aren't members are also welcome at this event, although we
would encourage you to become a member
<https://donate.wikimedia.org.uk/civicrm/contribute/transact?reset=1&id=4>(for
only £5 a year) to enable you to participate fully in the day. If you
believe that you are a member but did not receive a message this morning,
please email membership(a)wikimedia.org.uk; although do be aware that Katie
(who manages this email address and membership enquiries) is on leave until
next Thursday so won't be able to respond immediately.
About the day
The day will start at 11am with a varied and interesting programme of talks
and workshops, plus the presentation of the UK Wikimedian of the Year
awards. This year, for the first time, we will also be presenting our
inaugural Honorary Memberships. We would love to hear from members of our
community and beyond in our lightning talks session, and details of how to
sign up for that will be circulated in June. We will also be looking for
nominations for the different categories in our awards, which recognise
people and institutions that have made a particularly significant
contribution to Wikimedia over the past year.
We are currently exploring different speaker and workshop ideas so if you
have any suggestions or requests, do feel free to get in touch.
AGM and elections
The Annual General Meeting itself will be held during the afternoon and
will include reports from the Chair, Treasurer and Chief Executive,
questions on these reports or other relevant issues, the election for
trustees of the Wikimedia UK board as well as voting on resolutions.
There are five trustee vacancies at this year’s AGM, with three existing
trustees likely to stand again. We are particularly keen to have more
people from the Wikimedia community on the board so please do consider
standing for these elections. We will share more details of how to do so
next month, but in the meantime you can find out more about the Wikimedia
UK board here <https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Board>.
Board and Members Resolutions
The board is proposing a number of ordinary resolutions and one special
resolution at this year’s AGM, which are on the wiki pages about the event
here <https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/2019_Annual_General_Meeting/Resolutions>.
Members are also entitled to propose resolutions for consideration at the
AGM. Any member who wishes to do so must let us know, with a copy of the
suggested text, by Friday 7th June at the latest. The suggested text may
either be sent by email to the charity at info(a)wikimedia.org.uk or may be
posted online at
https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/2019_Annual_General_Meeting/Resolutions
Register your attendance
With such a great spot on the Bristol harbourside, and a full schedule of
discussions, workshops and presentations, we’re very much hoping that you
will join us for the full day and participate in shaping the UK chapter for
the global Wikimedia movement.
Anyone who wants to attend must register in advance, so please sign up on
the Eventbrite page here
<https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/wikimedia-uk-2019-agm-tickets-62303110280>.
(Please note that you must register for the AGM on eventbrite rather than
on wiki as we need your full name, not Wikimedia user name, in order to
cross-reference with our members database. If you would prefer, you can
email us to confirm your attendance).
If you have any questions or more general comments, please do get in touch
with me or Katie Crampton - who will be leading on the logistics for the
day - on the membership email on our office number 020 3372 0761.
Very best wishes
Lucy

Hello Wikimedians, I want to let you know about a prospective project we
are trying to organise with Lambeth Council. Former Wikimedia UK Chief Exec
Jon Davies is now a Lambeth councillor, and we have been talking to him
about projects that we could potentially do in collaboration with them.
They are about to start renovating West Norwood Cemetery and want to run
some events around this to improve the representation of the cemetery on
Wikipedia and the people who are buried there.
Jon says:
"West Norwood Cemetery is one of the great Victorian Cemeteries of Britain.
It has sadly suffered neglect over the last century but an ambitious plan
by Lambeth Council funded by the Lottery Heritage Fund means that at last
it will be restored to something of its former glory. Lambeth Council is
keen to see this transformation and the cemetery's history celebrated and
wants to work with WMUK to do this through improving pages, wiring new
ones, releasing archive documents and photos and anything else we can think
of."
In order to help manage this potential project, Wikimedia UK would like to
find a lead volunteer to help us with the events and organisation of
training. We can pay expenses to help with costs you might incur while
working on this. We would be very grateful if any Wikimedians who might
have an interest in London history, and who may live near West Norwood
would let us know if they would be interested in getting involved in this
project and helping us to steward it.
All the best,

The Order of Industrial Heroism, the "Workers' VC":
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_Industrial_Heroism
was a British award for bravery in the course of one's work,
instituted by the Daily Herald, the official organ of the Trade Union
Congress.
Between 1923 and 1964, 440 awards were granted, mostly to individual
workers, with a few to organisations.
I have created a list at:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_recipients_of_the_Order_of_Industrial…
and would be grateful for help in checking and disambiguating many of
the blue links.
This list might also make a good subject for trade union/ industrial
history related editathon.

I'll be running an introductory workshop on SPARQL queries and their applications at the next Cambridge meetup, on 12 May:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meetup/Cambridge/41
Apologies for the clash with the London meetup: I'll not make a habit of this.
This will be a largely Wikidata-oriented edition of the Cambridge meetup, and I'm constrained by available spaces for the Makespace classroom, which is suitable for training. The main topic will be getting a grip on scientific literature as catalogued on Wikidata, in its many aspects, as required by the ScienceSource project I'm working on.
If you've not really seen the point of Wikidata, so far, this should be a point of entry. In the time provided we'll get to some more advanced things, too.
The SPARQL session will be 1300 to 1530, will not assume much previous Wikidata knowledge, and if you come you should bring a laptop.
Charles
Hi folks,
Is anyone familiar with the Wikipedia API? Some folks at the White Rose
consortium of universities want to do some research on how the English
Wikipedia links to their research repository. It would be useful to have
someone who knows how to use the API to help them out, so feel free to
message me off list.

Hi all,
Just a last reminder that we are holding a SkillShare workshop next week on
how to use AutoWikiBrowser
<https://blog.wikimedia.org.uk/2019/04/autowikibrowser-find-out-how-to-autom…>.
The workshop will be at the Wikimedia UK office on Tuesday from 6-9 PM,
5-11 Lavington Street, near Southwark/Blackfriars/London Bridge stations.
If you'd like to come please sign up on the Eventbrite page
<https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/wikimedia-uk-skillshare-using-autowikibrowse…>
or list your attendance on the Meta page
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meetup/London_Skillshare/2>. I hope this
one will be more interactive, with a chance to get stuck into editing and
have people on hand to show you how it's done.
See you next week!
