Dear all
I've recently been in conversation with Red Sky Productions, a television
production company that creates factual television for leading UK and
international broadcasters, who are developing a programme about
the thousands of people in the UK who write and edit articles on
Wikipedia. This
came about as one of Red Sky's researchers heard my interview on the Today
programme as part of the #100womenwiki project late last year, which
sparked her interest in the structures, processes and above all the people
that make up Wikipedia.
Red Sky is particularly interested in the Wikipedian community and how
Wikipedia has brought people together both on and offline, and are keen to
talk to as many editors as possible about their work and involvement in the
community. There is no requirement to take part in any filming; at this
stage they are just researching and would like to have a friendly and
informal chat over the phone. They are also keen to hear about any social
Wikipedian gatherings that are coming up, which you may be happy for them
to pop along to.
If you’re interested in sharing your experiences, you can contact Yasmin at
Red Sky Productions on 0141 370 3486 or Yasmin.morgangriffiths@
redskyproductions.co.uk.
Please note that Ewan McAndrew, Wikimedian in Residence at Edinburgh
University, has shared Yasmin's message with the Scot-Wiki mailing list so
apologies for any cross-posting. Ewan has also spoken to Red Sky (who are
based in Scotland so naturally have a particular interest in activities
taking place there), and Ewan and I both feel this could be an interesting
opportunity to promote the unsung work of the Wikimedia movement's
community of volunteer contributors.
All best
Lucy

Hi all, it was great to talk to some of you yesterday at the London meetup,
and especially the discussion around trying to better organise those
Wikimedians who are also software developers. I think we all agree that
some of the tools people have created to edit and improve Wikipedia,
Commons etc are really useful, but that they aren't very accessible or user
friendly. I think we could make a useful impact if we could organise
developers to put their heads together to work on improving and extending
the vast array of tools that exist already. To this end, I've started a
Slack channel for Wikimedia developers to discuss how we might move forward
with the idea. If you would like to be added to the channel to discuss with
other Wikimedia developers how to take the idea forward and share what you
might already be working on, please reply with your interest and let me
know your email address so I can send you an invite to the channel,

Dear colleagues,
The first ‘Celtic Knot’ – Wikipedia Language Conference<http://thinking.is.ed.ac.uk/wir/2017/02/17/save-the-date-celtic-knot-confer…> will take place 5 & 6 July 2017 at the University of Edinburgh in collaboration with Wikimedia UK.
Please note: the ‘call for ideas’ has now been extended to Friday 17th March 2017.
This Wikimedia event will focus on showcasing innovative approaches to open education, open knowledge and open data that support and grow Celtic and Indigenous language communities.
Following enquiries, the criteria for submissions is that presentations/workshops should be:
* Relevant to Wikimedia<https://www.wikimedia.org/>.
* Address interests in-keeping with Wikimedia’s mission<https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Mission_statement>.
* Be of interest to Wikimedians<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_community> specifically.
Therefore, any proposals should make it very clear how their presentation will be of interest to this audience.
To assist with seeing areas of commonality and links with the Wikimedia projects<http://thinking.is.ed.ac.uk/wir/2017/03/10/seeing-the-links-at-the-celtic-k…> you can click here<http://thinking.is.ed.ac.uk/wir/2017/03/10/seeing-the-links-at-the-celtic-k…>.
If you would like to attend as a delegate then we are asking people for expressions of interest and to save the date until booking is open. If you would like to present then we are asking for suggested ideas to be no longer than 100-200 words showcasing the best of your work which both addresses the conference themes and satisfies the above criteria. (Submitted ideas which already explicitly address this criteria need not resubmit.)
To find out more about the conference themes and the format of sessions please visit the Celtic Knot<http://thinking.is.ed.ac.uk/wir/2017/03/10/seeing-the-links-at-the-celtic-k…> page. Email your session proposal to ewan.mcandrew(a)ed.ac.uk<mailto:ewan.mcandrew@ed.ac.uk> indicating the session type, conference theme and how it meets the criteria by no later than Friday 17th March.
Please feel free to forward this event to interested colleagues in your network. If you would like to learn more then please contact me direct at ewan.mcandrew(a)ed.ac.uk<mailto:ewan.mcandrew@ed.ac.uk>

Dear all
One of our fantastic and very active Welsh editors is going to the
Wikipedia for Peace camp in Vienna in March, and has told us that there may
be room for someone else with travel and accommodation both covered. Take a
look here

for
more details.
If anyone would like to attend please get in touch with me ASAP (by email
to lucy.crompton-reid(a)wikimedia.org.uk) and I'll follow up with you and the
organisers.
All best, and happy Friday!

You may have seen the unveiling of the 'Leekfrith Torcs' on the news today.
Clem Rutter started, and I expanded:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leekfrith_torcs
which is currently on en.Wikipedia's Main Page, 'In The News' section.
I'm particularly please that the 9Mb image used was released, promptly
after my request, by Staffordshire County Council. UK local government
bodes such as that one are not usually known for their grasp of open
content and the importance of making such media available under open
licences. I'll be using it a lot, as a case study - with 25 million
main-page views per day, I'm hoping that it will help to change
attitudes in other public bodies!

Dear all
Many thanks to those of you who have inputted into the two policies I
circulated earlier this year for community consultation (about Diversity
and Safeguarding). I'm in the process of revising those draft policies -
according to the suggestions that have been made - for board review in
March.
As I mentioned at the time, I'm updating a number of board-level policies
and would welcome community feedback into the following working documents
by Wednesday 1st March:
Volunteers Policy
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hHZ-JIUhl0NAcS9kT3d-LNYH7DUW1Oz0Vyf6OrY…
Safe Space Policy
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1a1vWJBFFn_dQ0nmXIINYHmp3fXSKrY3I5q4qfv7…
Donation and Grants Acceptance Policy
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1UnqR3V9-_mOMacEQo0xzTGn6aY9-HaC3jAC1Lk6…
Please feel free to add comments directly to the document or to email me
with your feedback.
Many thanks
Lucy
