Subject: [OpenGLAM] No Copyright Infringement Intended, 7th April - 21st May
To: open-glam(a)lists.okfn.org
Hi everyone!
I'm curating an exhibition about copyrigh taking place from 7th April
- 21st May at Phoenix in Leicester, UK.
No Copyright Infringement Intended is a group exhibition exploring the
relationship between copyright and culture in the digital age,
investigating how the concept of ownership and authorship is evolving
and coming into conflict with outdated copyright and intellectual
property laws.
The exhibition features work by Nick Briz, Emilie Gervais, Nicolas
Maigret, Christopher Meerdo, Jan Nikolai Nelles & Nora Al-Badri,
Duncan Poulton, Fernando Sosa, Andrea Wallace & Ronan Deazley. Further
details are here
http://www.phoenix.org.uk/event/no-copyright-infringement-intended/
In addition to the exhibition there will be a panel discussion,
Copyright as Frame and Prison on 28th April
http://www.phoenix.org.uk/event/copyright-as-frame-and-prison/ and a
Curator's tour on 11th May
http://www.phoenix.org.uk/event/curators-tour/ , both of which are
free to attend.
Let me know if there's any questions.
Kind regards,
Antonio

Hi all,
Very occasional post from a long-time subscriber here!
I run social media for the BBC's speech and classical radio stations and for some of the BBC's classical brands (orchestras, Proms etc.).
We have a constant need for images. We use the usual mixed bag of sources: commercial picture libraries, the BBC archive, commissioned photos, some public domain and cc sources.
We have a pretty cast-iron rule forbidding the use of Wikimedia Commons images. Historically, we've felt that there was sufficient uncertainty about the ownership of some Commons images that it would be safest for us to steer clear all together (sometimes, for instance, we find images in commercial libraries like Hulton Getty that are also in the Commons and this creates the kind of doubt about ownership that stops us from using them).
So, in the interests of updating my knowledge (and possibly our policy), is there any up-to-date advice for organisations like the BBC about the safe usage of content from the Wikimedia Commons? Should we rely on Commons images more often? Is there any guidance for how to judge the ownership of a Commons image reliably? And what's Wikipedia's policy about the use of these images in entries?
Thank you!

Dear all
I am inviting you to join in the ongoing discussions about the future of
the Wikimedia movement. As Chapters, user groups and individual
contributors we are being asked: What do we want to build or achieve over
the next 15 years? What role do we want to play in the world in 2030? Who
will have joined our movement? What work lies ahead of us?
There are various different ways in which individuals can voice their
ideas, including:
- Participate
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Strategy/Wikimedia_movem…>
on wiki
- Attend an in-person meeting
- Participate in a live online facilitated discussion (e.g. through
Skype or Google hangout)
There are three cycles during the first phase of the process (which
culminates at Wikimania 2017), with the first cycle coming to an end on
14th April. Wikimedia UK will be organising or helping to facilitate at
least one 'in person' discussion and an online live discussion during each
cycle, with the first meeting scheduled to take place on *Monday 10th April
from 3 - 5pm *in London. The first virtual discussion will also be
confirmed ASAP.
The meetings in cycles 2 and 3 will happen outside London and outside of
office hours, with details to be circulated when these events have been
arranged. In some cases, in person discussions will be organised at
existing local meetups (with the agreement of those communities) and in
others, specific strategy meetings will be arranged. Any interested
volunteers, members, editors or staff and trustees of the Chapter are
welcome to participate in any or all of these discussions; and I'd love to
hear from anyone who would like to take on a volunteer role in this
process, such as facilitating discussions, or taking and writing up notes
from meetings.
There is a lot of detailed information on meta about the strategy process,
with the main portal
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Strategy/Wikimedia_movem…>
for
the project providing a high-level overview and orienting people towards
more specific areas of work. As the process unfolds, myself and others on
the Wikimedia UK team will contact you again with more details of the work
happening here and ways in which you can participate; however in the
meantime I would be grateful if you could email
nicola.furness(a)wikimedia.org.uk if you are planning to attend the meeting
in London on 10th April.
Please note that as the Discussion Co-ordinator for the UK, I am
specifically concerned with the conversations happening within Track A
(organised groups) and Track B (individual contributors). Work is being
developed separately for Tracks C and D, which represent a broader audience
of new and existing readers and parters as well as experts in knowledge,
communities and technology. Wikimedia UK will support and contribute to
these discussions as requested by the Foundation, but they are not our
focus.
If you have any questions about the UK's role in the movement strategy,
please do ask. If you have comments on the movement strategy process in
general, or (crucially!) if you have ideas about where we should be heading
as a movement, please comment on meta
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2017/Participate>
.
With thanks for reading and all best
Lucy

Dear All,
I'm delighted to be able to announce that we are back at the Cinema Museum
in Lambeth, London for an editathon on the 18th June.
For the moment this is just a holding notice, we are first going to promote
this to their mailing list, but trainers and film buffs will definitely be
welcome.
More details will be posted at

Tried info(a)wikimedia.org.uk. I didn't get a reply.
Would wikimedia UK be interested in me donating my old Canon EOS 5D Mark III
(~42K shutter actuations)?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_EOS_5D_Mark_III
Canon specs say it should be good for another 100K shutter actuations.
It has had zero careful owners but best I can tell everything appears
to be working.
