Wikimedia UK is offering a small number of scholarships to support our
community members to attend and contribute to Wikimania 2016 in Esino
Lario.
There are three scholarships of €500. A scholarship covers the €350
registration option (which includes accommodation for four days and travel
to the conference from the airport in Italy), and travel to the conference
from the UK for up to €150. We hope that this will enable the scholarship
recipients to participate in the heart of the conference.
Volunteer activity within the UK Wikimedia movement is the main criteria of
eligibility. Volunteers who applied for the WMF scholarship but were
unsuccessful can also apply. We will prioritise applicants who would not be
able to fund their attendance themselves.
The deadline for applying is 8th April and we aim to let you know by 15th
April (Wikimania registration runs until 15th May).
Please fill the form below to be considered for the scholarship.

Dear all
I have previously emailed regarding this year's AGM for Wikimedia UK, which
will be taking place on Saturday 9th July. This is the point where new
board members can stand for election and where members of the charity have
the opportunity to express their views, raise ideas or discuss issues,
either in the formal context of the AGM itself or informally throughout the
day. We would also like to maximise the opportunity of having a
(hopefully!) large group of Wikimedians together, to deliver training
and/or facilitate discussion and workshops. The day is for volunteers,
editors and members and so it will be essential to involve volunteers in
thinking about and planning these activities.
Several volunteers and members have suggested that it would be good to hold
the meeting outside of London. Without having a real sense of the extent to
which location will impact on people's decision to attend, and what
people's preferences are, it's difficult to fix on a specific location; but
we do need to confirm the venue asap. I think for most people (and I
realise there will be exceptions), London or Birmingham are the best
options and are generally well-connected in terms of public transport. I
would therefore be very grateful if you could complete the doodle poll,
below, as this will give us a sense of the majority view - and also start
to give us an idea of potential numbers. I'm away on holiday next week but
plan to confirm the venue in early April.

Also, please do let me know if you'd be interested in helping to shape the
day as a volunteer!
Many thanks

All,
A bit of a notice for you which has been shared around our social media
accounts... I thought I'd share it here as well, for completeness.
Apologies as it's a copy and paste from the event directly and it's not a
WMUK-run event - but obviously we'll be showing our support where we can.
The Jimmy Wales Foundation <https://www.facebook.com/JimmyWalesFoundation/> is
asking people to join the global protest for the #WhereIsBassel
<https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/whereisbassel?source=feed_text&story_id=11…>
campaign
on the 19th March in London (Marble Arch at 2pm), Paris, Berlin, Boston,
San Francisco and more.
The Facebook event page is at

Bassel Khartabil
<https://www.facebook.com/pages/Bassel-Khartabil/455212144510107> has been
imprisoned in Syria since March 15, 2012. A passionate advocate of
free-knowledge, he worked as the lead of Creative Commons Syria, and a
major contributor to Mozilla. He was also an editor of the Arabic Wikipedia.
His latest open-knowledge project has been an effort to preserve the
cultural heritage of Syria, in the city of Palmyra. Currently under threat
of groups like ISIS, who have been destroying ancient structures despite
reassurances that they would be spared, #NEWPALMYRA
<https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/newpalmyra?source=feed_text&story_id=11660…>
hopes
to use 3D modelling and free media to recreate what is being destroyed.
Following Bassel's arrest in Damascus in 2012, he was charged by the
government of Syria with "harming state security". Bassel was put on trial
without legal representation and was subjected to torture. In October 2015,
reports emerged that Bassel disappeared from his prison cell. Rumours
suggested that Bassel had been sentenced to death.
As volunteers for Wikimedia UK it can be easy to forget that we are safe
and well - and able to edit freely. GLAM institutions welcome editors and
Wikipedians in Residence. We enjoy balanced coverage of our endeavours. And
though we may not always be happy with the results, public officials can &
will still engage freely with our movement.
There are also the twin foundations of Creative Commons
<https://www.facebook.com/creativecommons/> and open software, both of
which Bassel has contributed so much to, and without which none of our work
could be possible.
So we are asking you to please join us when we stand at Marble Arch this
weekend to ask #WhereisBassel? We will be wearing face masks with Bassel's
image on them and demand justice for a wronged free knowledge advocate.

Hi all,
I'm pleased to announce the results of the wikimeet survey that ran late last year. The summary and full details are now on Meta at:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/UK_Wikimeet_survey_2015
The key results from the survey that should affect future wikimeets are:
- Organising wikimeets in South East England should be a priority (We are assuming that when people selected this, they meant official South East England region, which does not include London, since that was a separate option)
- There should be more local wikimeets: ideally they should be no more than about 30 minutes away from a number of Wikimedians, who should only have to pay £5-£10 to get to the wikimeet by public transportation.
- The best times for a wikimeet are on Saturday or Sunday afternoons, preferably in a museum/cultural institute or a cafe rather than a pub.
- Better notifications should be sent around about upcoming wikimeets, ideally through email, user talk pages and watchlists, on a regional or UK-wide basis about a month in advance of the wikimeet.
- There are a number of people who would potentially be willing to organise a local wikimeet, but most need more information about this, and others need assistance. WMUK should follow up with those that are willing to organise wikimeets to offer them any support/assistance that they need.
Please post any comments on the talk page for the results. Hopefully we can try implementing some of the suggested changes to wikimeets and the way that wikimeet notifications are circulated in the near future!
Thanks,
Mike
Hi all
One of our privileges as a Wikimedia chapter is to vote in the
chapter/affiliate election for the so-called "affiliate-selected WMF
board posts". Candidate nominations closed this week, and the board now
needs to decide which candidate or candidates we wish as a chapter to
support. Members or volunteers who have views on this are welcome to
provide input now, either here, on our Engine Room wiki page, or by
email to any board member.
You may like to have a look at the current candidates, here
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Affiliate-selected_Board_seats/2016/Nominat…
and their responses to questions from the community:

This event is confirmed, and basic details are on
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Cambridge_Images_Workshop_2016
More about the programme is on the way. The first session will start at entry
level, but will be looking at Commons in the round as well as the usual
introduction to uploading; there will be hands-on work.
